Just got this book to improve my character designs by 3D Total Publishing. This is a brief review of the book and it's worth purchasing. So far I've enjoyed their books. Sorry for the shaky camera. I didn't use my camera stand this time, and hand held it.

Hi Nancy, thank you for the review. I wonder if you have owned "Creating Stylized Characters" book from 3Dtotal as well. If you do, could you do a review on that too? I heard from a lot of people told me that the information in that book is familiar to this one. I live in Vietnam so it's quite expensive over here to import such book. Therefore, your review could help me choose between the two. Thank you.

Ah ok. I do not have that one. If I get it I will make a video on it. Do not know if you tried online courses, but Schoolism has an amazing character design class with Daniel Arranga. Very affordable. Good luck with your art career!

Very late response and I'm not sure if you've made your choice already, but I'm also looking at buying either this book or the "Creating Stylized Characters" book. You can find some good reviews / flip throughs of "Creating Stylized Characters" on RU-vid to get a good comparison. I would say that these two books cover a lot of the same topics and it'll mainly come down to a preference in art style / taking a look at the contributors to the book and seeing if there are any standout artists / artists you prefer. For me, I prefer the look of "Creating Stylized Characters" and there's a contributing artist called Iris Muddy who I love :) So I went with that one.

If I want to refenrece this book on my paper, what Author do I reference? like "Character Design will dictate the visual of a character wich is by itself a product of the world they inhabit (Author Name 2020)" What name do I put in (Author Name 2020)??
@NancyMillerIllustration
@NancyMillerIllustration Год назад
If you are referencing the author, then you have multiple authors on the cover listed. You have to include them all in the citation. I hope that helps.

I learned to cite with Turabian. That's what Art History requires. Depends on the institution's requirements for citations. I would ask the instructor for examples.

That the trend of character design at this time. If you look at contemporary animation you can see the influence.

@@NancyMillerIllustration thank you very much for your answer !!! one last question ... i would like to design my own character , do you think that the aproach presented in tihs book can considered the industry standard approach ?
@NancyMillerIllustration
@NancyMillerIllustration 2 года назад
@@dioniziolo This book is a good primer to learn character deisgn. I think it would depend on who you want to work for in industry. There are other character books like the Silverway by Stephen Silver that feel more like characters for Cartoon Network. I would look at the studio's work and see if the look of the characters fits their aesthetic. If you wanted to learn from a Pixar character designer there is a course on Schoolism if you prefer video instruction. My background is in children's books illustration, and I used this book to improve my book characters. I hope that helps.

It's perfectly fine now, yay! I like the book, but feels like they copied a lot of designs. The baby look liked Jack-Jack, the kid named Ralph looked like Gru, and the kid on the next page looks like Miles Morales lol... but it's probably just me overlooking into it.

I think it's one of the things that artists tend to do we build that visual library of things we are inspired by. It comes out in the work. I think they probably were inspired by the characters you are referencing. I like the things they are sharing as far as content for learning. If you come across any good character design books please feel free to comment and share. I'm always looking for new books.

I prefer silver for breaking down steps for character design, but the 3D total publishing is great for variety of character design examples.
