One of my best tips to increase pointing accuracy: when you're doing you're originally alignment - whether it's a two-star, auto two-star, skyalign, whatever - make your final movements the same way that the telescope moves when it's finding an object. What do I mean by that? So, you're using the telescope, having fun. You punch in a DSO. Watch what the scope does after you punch it in. The scope overshoots the target, and makes its final adjustments at a slower motor speed. As it's making its final adjustments, put your eye to the eyepiece. You'll see that the object comes into view from the bottom left corner - it's moving up, and to the right. The next time you do your alignment on one of your alignment stars, and you're making the final adjustments to center it, put that star in the bottom left corner. And make your final two movements of the scope to center the object - you guessed it - up and to the right. This session, all of your gotos will be much more accurate. Why? There is some play, some backlash in the gears that are moving the telescope around. When you do your final movements this way, the same way the mount does it, you're eliminating that play in the way the mount expects it to be eliminated.

A simpler version of what you are describing is standard in gunnery. In order to avoid inaccuracies caused by the dead travel in the traverse and elevation mechanisms, the gunner always approaches the point of aim in the same manner. Example: I have an Eastern German book on tank gunnery that teaches the gunner to always move to the point of aim from bottom to top and from left to right.

I'm on about my fourth Ed Ting video, and I remain profoundly grateful. There is just so much useful information packed into each video, delivered straight and without theatrics. This level of professionalism doesn't come easy - I know. I'm getting a lot out of these. My entry point is research I'm undergoing to replace my beginner Orion SpaceProbe 130 ST. I'm inclined to go with an auto guide model, because light pollution and haze in New Orleans are so bad that star-hopping is an exercise in frustration. Future growth into a refractor attached to an AVX mount previously acquired with a C6 might be a wise way to go. Still working the options. So, thank you, Ed.
@LeChatOscar
@LeChatOscar 2 года назад
If light pollution is too much, then you wont see anything with the auto guide. If you cannot find a target with star hopping, then there is not much to see.

I have the 8” Evolution. I can’t say enough good things about it! It’s an amazing telescope, and the mount is awesome! The tracking is incredibly accurate and strong enough to piggyback a second telescope AND a second camera! It can hand 2 scopes & 2 DSLR cameras and still track good enough to produce nice images! If you are thinking about getting one of these, DO IT! You can’t go wrong!!

This is by far one of my favorite telescopes. I take my evo 6 out almost everytime I take any of my other scopes out. The battery is great. Worry free. Excellent visuals. Very easy to transport. Warning for orange clutch knobs. They can get stuck if you tighten them when it's cold out. Solution: thin rubber strap wrench from harbor freight. Great review Ed! FYI: When on the wedge, the telescope goes to the stars just like avx. One more thing I love about this scope is the tripod. The accessory tray is so convinient to fold the legs for transport. I wish celestron had that for the avx tripod.

I encountered the issue with the clutch knobs the other night. I stowed the telescope away, tightening the knobs lightly. Next morning I played with the telescope while inside. I wondered why I had such a hard time loosening the knob. I just bought this telescope and am a total beginner. It seems to be a great package. But I will make one exception as far as praise goes: the ‚star pointer‘ quick finder it comes with, is a piece of junk in my opinion.

I just bought a brand new EVO 9.25 that was damaged in shipping with a few superficial scratches and a couple dings on the optical tube that have had no degrading effect on the optical performance for under $1,000 US! I think I got the deal of the century on this one! I have 3x8 SCT’s 2 Meade LX90 and LX200 and a Celestron 8SE so I really didn’t think the 9.25 was going to be that much better then what I already owned , basically bought the 9.25 because it was a sweetheart deal. Then I looked at Saturn with my 2” 30 mm flat field with a 2x Barlow and I was blown away! The 9.25 SCT is simply the best planetary scope I have ever used and might be the best scope I have ever used all the way around. Much better then my 12” light bridge or my Explore scientific 102 mm APO or anything else I have in my inventory! Buying the scope taught me a valuable lesson! Even a seemingly small increase in aperture can make a big difference!

Very good, to-the-point review sir. You break it down using comparisons to earlier models which is an excellent way to promote someone to update instead of possibly moving away from Celestron for their next purchase. I am not a big Celestron fan but I must give them kudos for using the vixen plate to attach the tube to the mount. Allowing other scopes to be mounted with the electronics (taking care not to mount too long and/or heavy scope) is a great step forward in working with the amateur community. For so long, everything has been built in a proprietary manner coming out of Meade and Celestron. Thank you, Celestron for breaking the ice. If they still want to keep those proprietary "no one else has" features, I suggest they work on better optics which with the newer type cameras is becoming a true necessity.

The clutch addition is the biggest advantage to the Evolution, IMO. I had a 6SE, loved the OTA and thought the mount was okay for accuracy, but hated I had to either have a power source ALL THE TIME to use it or just be stuck at what ever altitude I powered it off and just move it around.

I have a Nexstar 11 GPS with carbon tube which is about 20y old (bought it used in 2018). I love it, still works perfect. There was the GPS roll-over problem a while back, but that got resolved reasonably quickly via HC update. It also has the SkyAlign option, that's the one i use mostly, i find it to be really good and easy, but the model does degrade a bit when observing for several hours. A have deforked it before, but placed it back on the fork mount, AZ mounts are just more fun for visual observing imho. I would love to see you review a Nexstar GPS if you can get your hands on one !

Great review as always. I have a 6SE… I kind of prefer it because the battery isn’t internal and thus easily replaced. Also it’s hundreds of dollars cheaper, to your point. All lithium cells eventually need replacement, doesn’t matter if it’s a cell phone, laptop, or telescope mount. And Celestron has no clear answers to that question.

This is a LiFePo4 battery, they are rated for thousand of charges (4x, 5x than Li-Ion), are much more secure (fire hazard very low) and are more resilient than Li-ion (just don't give them deep discharges, 80% should be the maximum). Battery pack is also quite simple to reach, you just need a torx and an hex key and in 10 minutes of work you are already at the battery pack (plus gears and pcbs). Battery pack is an O cell 9,6V LifePo4 4,5Ah, 43.2Wh. I found them on different stores online, however they are limited in numbers and expensive, but I read on cloudynights that Celestron support can send them on request. Hope this helps!

Well presented Ed I actually bought the 8 inch version of this getting into the hobby but quickly changed to an Eq mount. The package as a whole though at that beginner stage I have to say was user friendly and can be paired with the Sky Safari app as a means of Goto, also the lithium battery was very capable. Regards Ollie

Over the years I have picked up, separately, the SE & Evolution mount, a C8 and a C6. The C8 came with a Losmandy style dovetail rail/plate while the mount have the Vixen style attachment. From what I can gather Celestron offered both styles in both the mounts and the scopes. They won't or can't sell you the parts (I asked) to convert the Evo mount to Losmandy, but you can easily - and "cheaply" get the dovetail rails. The tubes should come pre-drilled and tapped for both (at least on the C8). But you may find the location of the focuser knob moving around (on my C8 it went from 3 o'clock to 6 o'clock - not a deal breaker). I have a Losmandy alt-az mount that can take either version and over time I have picked up a bias in favor of the Losmandy - mainly driven by long heavy refractors. I have not tried the C6 on the Evo mount - you got me thinking I should!

Thanks for the video. :) I honestly don't know anything about telescopes.. I'm here because in my upcoming novel I plan to make my protagonist a big astronomy nerd so I have to get deeply enough into the matter (pun intended) to write a convincing character who knows what he is talking about. Videos like these really help with that. I chose this telescope because although very expensive, it seemed like the best one for a passionate intermediate.

The evolution also has the "Auto 2 star alignment" where you only have to tell it the name of the first star and after aligning on that, you select the second star from a list and the scope will seek to that star, though it is not always in the FOV, but using a telrad, red dot, or finder, it is easy to bring the 2nd star into the FOV for alignment. if your HC doesn't have it, try upgrading the firmware.

Ed, great video. Hope I’m not too late for a question but I’m looking at getting into the hobby and have binge watched all your videos. Thank you for doing these. I would prefer the goto mounts with a sct. I thought I settled on the Evo based on your video, but in the 8” size as I’m interested in observing and maybe trying a little basic astrophotography at this point, but you mentioned a nugget at the end in terms of the price being close to the avx version, which of course I decided to look into. I also saw your reply to Ollie’s Astro below. Not knowing how deep I may get into the hobby, would you recommend future proofing myself and go with the 8” avx version even though it seems a little more difficult to set up. Spend a little more money now but save in the future if I do go down the astrophotography rabbit hole, or keep it simple with the Evo?

If you're interested in a C8, you need the AVX. The NexStar mount is not strong enough to hold a C8, nor will it always be accurate enough for a 2000mm focal length optical tube. The NexStar mounts seem optimized for the C6.

You don't need a GPS unit, nor a hand controller. The Evolutions have integrated wifi (and if the inbuilt one eventually fails you can simply plug in the wifi module accessory) and you control it via the skyportal app on your phone. Time and location data is provided automatically from your phone. If you add the starsense accessory and focus motor, you can control the lot from skyportal and it's way more fun than an antiquated hand controller. The tripods are too small though, and not wide enough stance. The 9.25 is great with the larger tripod and I'd recommend upgrading any of them to that tripod as the skinny leg small tripod is the weak spot on the 6 and 8.

I do like the Advanced VX version, but it's about $250 more, plus I'd have to add an external battery to make it an apples to apples comparison, so that's another $200 +/-. My question is what you think of the Wedge as an eventual add-on accessory. Thank you for your wonderful videos and willingness to share information!

@@edting Yes, I definitely follow your channel, but first time I watched this video. Seemed like the mount was one of the main weaknesses of the SE line. Just attended a Star Party and heard the same thing from two 8SE owners that were there. The AVX actually seems like the better choice for not much more $. Offers a true EQ mount, and also seems to be the better option for a year or so from now when it's time to dabble in AP. As this is early in my astronomy journey, would you suggest the SCT or Newtonian on the AVX? Could also go with AVX or similar mount paired with the GSO 6" OTA from Agena. I have the Evo 6. Here are my thoughts. First, the case that Celestron sells for the scope does not fit. It is too small. Second, the red dot finder needed to be shimmed to get alignment with the viewfinder. Third, SkyPortal app requires that your phone must have location services in order for the app to determine the telescope location. Fourth, you will want both a right angle findermscope and an illuminated cross hair reticle eyepiece to find stars for alignment. Fifth, Sky Portal app seems to lose the bottom line of program options once the scope is aligned and used. Sixth, the scope and tripod base are good quality. Seventh, the clutches are a godsend. Eighth, when Skyportal giives an out of range error, you can go into the menu and adjust the limiters allowing the scope to go vertical if desired. Ninth, Skyportal normally forgets the alignment settings when the scope is turned off and the app is closed. Tenth, the scope and mount are hefty, but managable. Apeture fever is a real thing, but if you are getting into astronomy the 6 inch scope will see a lot more use. Eleventh, get a pair of astronomy binoculars and a parallelogram mount before buying a telescope.

It can align under those conditions, but only if there are two bright stars in your view off of your balcony to align on. Otherwise, no, you won't be able to align the scope that way. But, you can still use the scope in a completely manual mode by unlocking both clutches.

Thanks for a great review Ed, but I can't say I can ever imagine a time when I'd want a "Goto" telescope. The smarter the technology gets, the dumber the people will get! How did Herschel manage on his woooden scope, 40 feet up on a dark and frosty riight?

The only thing is that that's a lot of money for a ,6 inch SCT. Of course the mount and tripod offset this a bit but at this price point you're getting into 5 inch ED refractor territory.

Considering the $899 price tag that has been on the 6SE for 10 years now, I can’t figure out Celestron’s justification at making this version so much more. The design is better, slightly. I could see charging maybe $1099 for this, but it seems they’ve gotten a little cute to me.

Yes, and there is also the C6/AVX combo lurking around that ~$1600 price range. But some people are really enamored with the NexStar format and that's what they will buy.

@@edting Hi Ed, I have done some research online to compare the SLT, SE and Evo series across Celestron. I do realize that SLT dont come with XLT coating for their OTA, however not too much was mentioned about the performance differences. Also, based on Celestron's website, the AstroFi 6 comes with XLT coating, hence my original wonder if it was a value buy. Would it be possible maybe one day you can compare the 6 inch SCT across the series? I wonder if the OTA are similar performing? (of course i know they arent, but by how much do they compare?) In Singapore, they cost $1299, S$1699 and S$2399 respectively. I hope if I get the Evo, it will be money well spent too. Best regards from Singapore, Kevin
@edting
@edting 2 года назад
The issue isn't the OTA (I've never seen much difference between the fancy as opposed to standard coatings) it's the mount. The SLT mounts aren't very good. They have issues with pointing accuracy and long term reliability. If you've followed me, I'm not totally thrilled with the standard NexStars either. In the Celestron line, you need to get to the AVX/CPC level before things start getting decent.

Stay with the 6. The NexStar mount seems optimized for the C6. It isn't quite strong enough for the C8 (stay away from the Evo 9.25).

The $1500 - $2000 level is the least I recommend you spend on a computerized telescope. Go any lower and there start to be serious compromises in pointing accuracy, long-term reliability, and QC.

I just bought an Evolution 8 and maybe I've not quite figured it out but I'm finding the app to be very fidgety. Typically doesn't connect. When it does connect the alignment is very fragile, if I leave the app when it's on "1 of 3 stars" when I come back it says "5 of 3 stars", what's up with that? And my worst surprise regarding the app. It turns out that the hand controller doesn't know about the app's alignment. So I recommend using the hand controller primarily, especially since I've found that alignment to be a lot less brittle. You know, you might be unpleasantly surprised if you go to the bathroom at 2am to come back and find the app lost its alignment when your phone was disconnected from the scope. Definitely a great scope, probably worth the upgrade from the 8se for the built in battery and the more robust mount, but don't buy it just for the WiFi IMHO.
@edting
@edting 2 года назад
Yes, not only that, in my experience all phone/tablet enabled telescopes have these same connectivity/timeout issues. I don't think the standardization is quite there yet. The advantage of the phone/tablet control is the average person knows how to use one, while "our" hand controllers require a learning curve. On the other hand, phones/tablets aren't optimized for telescopes, and they've had decades to fine-tune those hand controllers.
@milllworks

wow… you guys are way off. you just have to go into the scope’s set up (in sky safari) and make sure you’re set to use the your particular scope’s wifi (there are numerous ones so choose wisely) and then use a reticulated eyepiece (cross hairs) when doing the three star alignment (tablet only no hand controller). also make sure your tablet does not auto shutoff after a certain amount of time. I absolutely love using my EVO 8” with an ipad, and sky safari. it rocks, and i might add is rock solid once you do the initial debug (which you have to do with all scopes, lets be honest). once aligned (which is remarkably accurate by the way, as my targets are always centered) I love that I can point the ipad at a particular section of sky, freeze that section of sky, enlarge it to max and look for galaxies in that region. app gives me relative magnitude for each target, so I know ahead of time which ones are likely targets (meaning I’ll actually see it) then just tap goto and watch the scope find it. its a wonder! my first scope was a 4SE, so I know all about using antiquated hand controllers, old school alignment techniques and spending hours star hopping to often frustrating ends. this thing is literally “light years” from all that.

@@milllworks I'm on Android so it might just be that they've put in less polish on Android. Google has a bunch of clever shit going on with their VPN and Fi to prevent my phone from getting stuck on a wifi network with no internet. Incidentally, one advantage of the SE that only occurred to me after buying the Evolution was that with an external battery I could use that battery for more than one scope. I'm interested in also getting a 4" Maksutov for more portable use, and of course right after i bought the Evo 8 a NexStar 4SE shows up on Facebook marketplace at a bargain basement price. If I had bought the 8SE I could have snapped up that 4SE and then had just one battery for both of them and used the eight double As when using them at the same time. Ah well, such is the hobby.
