Review of the AWB OneSky Reflector telescope - The world's best telescope under $200!

Welcome everyone, here's my review of my Astronomers without Borders OneSky reflector telescope. This is a small, tabletop reflector on a Dobsonian base that travels easily to campgrounds, dark sky sites, a friend's house, in an airplane, wherever you might go! For under $200, it's the best telescope on earth to see stuff not on earth. A generous 5" aperture means that certain dim objects off limits to "entry level scopes" become a real possibility with this one, and with the clever truss system, the whole thing closes up tiny and compact for convenient storage.

I wanted to buy a telescope as a gift for my friend (he's really into astronomy) and your review helped me choose one. Thank you so much!

This is the scope I own. I love it! I recommend making a foam shroud for it. I used a black foam sheet from the local hobby store. This is also a great scope to upgrade with a Vixen alt az mount. Add in a 13mm nagler eyepiece and that is all you need to enjoy the night sky all night long and makes a perfect grab and go anywhere scope.

Absolutely. The shroud is very useful if you're observing where there's any amount of stray light. Which is most places.

Always been fascinated by the night sky. My wife just got me this telescope for Christmas, and I'm very excited to try it out.

Well I have looked at this for a few years now and would really like to try it. I understand it is more hands-on and will not fit a tracker(?) or be good for photography(?) Many years ago I saw Jupiter and its moons through a small scope and was totally blown away.

Cool, except I cannot find it for sale!!!!!! aaahhhhh! Always... AWB says it may be available in late July.

Could you either switch the dovetail bar to the other side or rotate the entire assembly of the focuser and secondary mirror 180 degrees, so that the telescope could be placed on a nexstar mount? On a nexstar mount, scopes have to face the opposite way.

Unfortunately, at least on this model, it's fixed to the tube, does not use rings..

These are ~$275(with tax). At $275 + shipping, it has a lot of competition. Just for bang per buck, it's pretty easy to beat, at that price; I haven't tried the OneSky, but Ive tried a few scopes with the same optical train and or design, so I have a well educated expectation. But, that said, the 'cause' is a worthy reason to choose this one, if you can afford to.

Well it was $200, inflation is a B -word.

Yeah, sure. Bad enough without exaggeration.

It has the 5” Heritage scopes that are near identical in design and price. The Orion Starblast also. Each of these are now in the $230-275 ballpark (and I’m sure they’ll be $300 by the time this comment is another year older). Other than that, not significant competition until you hit 6” ground mount Dobs which lately start at $500.

Yep, seems like that's the case for all telescopes. The pandemic increased demand explosively...

I saw =( I suppose it was inevitable, but still worth it at $249.
