In this video I review the Tesla (or vertical) style android based radio unit for the Lexus GX 470 / Toyota Prado, 2003 to 2009. Similar units are available for other cars like Ford, Chevy, Toyota. Save 10% at Phoenix Automotive with my referral link refrr.app/ujMu2q5Bas/62799.
NOTE: there is an updated unit out now - the PX6, a 6 core, 4 gb RAM unit and they should include Apple CarPlay or android auto without a dongle (via the Zlink app). Mine in this review is a 4 core, 2 GB unit. I recommend the PX6 AND I recommend going with Phoenix for US customers as there is ZERO support buying with the Chinese resellers on Aliexpress or Alibiba, not to mention I have been subject to fraud with a purchase on Alibaba. With the 10% code via the link above, it is also about the same price 1 year later for the new PX6 as what I paid in 2019, and Phoenix does actually respond to support requests based on my experience. I know others have had spotty experience with them, but I can tell you for a fact you will get ZERO support if you buy direct from Aliexpress/Alibaba, and then if you have to send it back, it is a hassle/costs...
I also want to give a shoutout to Sergey - he has a private facebook group and sells a custom firmware for $100. Highly recommended to do this as it makes the device less buggy with an updated OS, adds multiple themes you can select without having to read Chinese or go into the secret menu, has over the air updates now and just makes it work and look better without the AOL-like icons from 1995. I swapped out my unit reviewed here for a PX6 so I will work to make a new video soon. Overall, I recommend the unit to bring new life and modern technology to an old car. In my case, a 17 year old car! It as a few issues, but in general, for about $600 I added Internet, Apple CarPlay (or Android Auto), Bluetooth calling and music streaming, back up camera, TPMS tire monitoring, Waze/Google/Apple Maps and really any other app from the android store.
You can see I customized it as well with a cool skin from Car Launcher and with Sergey's firmware you can pick from other 20 different themes. You can also download Carwebguru. (Update: I switched to a carwebguru because the CarLauncher seemed slow).
I recommend buying from a US based reseller. here is one that has lots of options, not just for the Lexus. GM, Ford, Honda, Toyota and others can install this kind of screen. I bought direct from China via Aliexpress and it HAS NOT been a good experience. The unit works but I had lots of questions and they provided ZERO support. Maybe another reseller would be better. Mine was a reseller called ZWNAV so avoid them at all costs, and with the referral discount the price is actually about the same for that new unit now as what I paid for the original unit in 2019... Some of my menu items are in Chinese and zero customer service...so go with someone you can actually call or email and get a good answer.

NOTE: The newer 6 core units do have Carplay built in using the Zlink app. I have found this not very reliable, so I went back to using the Carlinkit dongle and the Autokit app. Works every time with plugging it in and wireless will connect within 20 seconds or so. Plug it in for more or less instant connection. The app and device also do get regular updates to make it better. Right now, it works pretty good.

Great video, I'm going to take the plunge and do this. I have a 2007 GX470 purchased new and only 85K miles, lol. I just changed the CV Axles too a couple weeks ago, boots were leaking and basically crudded over. I did it myself with my fiance's help putting new ones back in which is really best with two people. Not that hard but rusted on bolts made everything go slower. While I was there I changed all rotors, brakes, and calipers. This SUV is built like a tank.

Congrats! My son is going to college in the fall and he will not be taking the car, so I get to drive it again. I have had ours since 1400 miles back in 2003 and I still like driving it. I put a Metaltech bumper on the front - since I hit someone...just used the money to buy that and my son and I put it on ourselves. It looks badass, and it now has KO2 tires as well, so definitely not a mall crawler now. Sergey's custom firmware is a bit plus so do that - what comes with the unit is crap. Just bought a '08 GX470 and this is the first mod I'm going to. I love carplay in my '18 Charger R/T so this Lexus needs that, especially considering it is my wife's DD.

GX Overland that is great. I will say my wireless CarPlay is a little spotty. I also can’t download apps at the moment which I think is an android issue as it just says waiting for download. The screen has also separated a little from the plastic housing, I think because my son has been pressing on it hard. I am going to pull it out over Christmas and see if I can fix it...reseller from China is worthless...may go for the px6 at some point.

HomeDiary Bummer. I actually have the PX six unit from Phoenix automotive. I could’ve got it for a slightly cheaper from Ali express but decided to go with them because they are only 30 minutes away from me so service is a whole lot easier.

@@GXOverland Yes customer service is a key here. I am actually looking to maybe be a reseller for them and at least have some kind of US based presence. Starting to want the PX6 unit...and now I see 8 core units coming out...so by the time mine dies maybe they will be screaming fast. It is pretty cool how we can make an old car new again! Love technology.

How does your unit work? Looking to upgrade to the PX6 - as I understand it there is a different app that runs CarPlay now. Hopefully it works better than the autokit which I will say is spotty on working, at times.

Amazing setup. I installed one around 3yrs ago on our LX570 as well. It's been great and really helped me keep the truck instead of trading for something newer. How do you like yours now that a couple years have passed?

Regarding the HVAC and screen action. Supposedly it can work. I can't get mine to work for the temperature (some other options do work), but it really is not a big deal for me - I have the buttons to turn the heat up or down and those work fine. MAYBE the newer unit has that fixed. After almost a year I still like the functionality. I did buy a new wireless Apple Carplay dongle and it works pretty good. The new units have Apple Carplay (android auto) built in which is nice. Overall it is still a great addition to the truck that keeps on truckin'

I'm looking at this type of upgrade for my GX470. How many hours should I expect an installer to bill on the 2007 upgrade? Also, are there any other (competitive) full screen updates for the GX?

I was brave and got the px6 from Phoenix, installed on 10/7/2019. I'm pretty happy with it. The OEM backup camera did not work. I watched the video at Phoenix's site and did the install myself. It's very fast, boots up fast-ish, has jzinnova built in Car Play / Android Auto.

Sweet. So they have a version for the GX now? Too bad about the backup camera. Mine is a 2003 so it was too only anyway to have one but I have one in the license plate frame and it works fine. You can put in the 360 birdseye view which I think it real cool. Not sure how hard that would be to put in but for a big car like the GX might be worth it...

Can you help me out with a few questions? I keep watching these videos and I feel like the most important thing is left out..... How does it sound? I am a big SQ audio guy. I personally installed a very high end audio system in my 4runner and I'm very particular. I would choose something way different than this , but its the best option for the GX470 unless I want to rewire the HVAC. Also, how is the Bluetooth streaming and call quality? Do you have the rear seat entertainment and did it integrate with that? Thanks in advance.

Hey man, I've got a 2007 GX470 and I'm looking at the PX6 4G QuadCore from Phoenix, and I think CarPlay comes with it that model, I'm nervous to install on my own but I don't think the Geek Squad will be open for some time. How was your experience with the Geek Squad and do you think it's important to get it installed professionally? Having a little perspective, are you satisfied with the unit? Appreciate you making this video!

The Geek Squad guys were pretty good....the Lexus was easy for them. I had a wireless Carplay unit I also had them put in a 2011 Audi A6 and that was harder in part because instructions were not clear but they attempted it 3 times and finally got it installed and connected. They also installed a back up camera in the Audi and it was all included for that $199. Now, I ended up bricking that unit with a software update so I had to send it back to China. RSNAV was the company I bought it from and they have some cool stuff for Audis. In terms of a DIY install, I think it is doable. Only issue is maybe the backup camera - not sure if the new models support it - I think it does, but confirm - I think it is some issue with the power output. Mine had an aftermarket camera that is on a license plate bracket and that connects fine. You are right the new unit has Carplay built in which is nice. I have pulled out my unit a few times, connected the original, and then reconnected the android screen again. The connections kind of tell you where they need to go because of the size of the connectors. The hardest part is taking the bracket off the old and putting it on the new. Otherwise it is kind of plug and play and it fits in. Just use some plastic tools to pry the trim pieces carefully, starting by pulling up the plastic trim by the cup holders and the others can be take out in sequence. At some point I may upgrade to the PX6. I ended up getting a new wireless Carplay dongle on Amazon and have it tapped with 3M tape to the cigarette ash drawer at this point because I tried a 90 degree adapter and it worked for awhile but then said accessory not supported....so had to plug it in direct and no room to close the cigarette lighter door when plug straight in (with the 90 degree adapter I could close the door and I had it all taped up under that section so you could not even see it). At this point I am kind of leary of Alibaba/Aliexpress. I got burned on some cameras I tried to buy on Alibaba, so I would definitely go with a company that has some American presence because even just sending back that wireless carplay unit for the Audi is a pain in the ass and cost was $30 without tracking, about $70 with tracking. That was a month ago and still not received. So Phoenix is probably the best option at this point. Might cost a bit more but that is your insurance policy, in effect.... I love the original sound system in the 2007 GX470. What differences do you notice in the audio? No one mentions it, but the audio is superb as it sits. If it comes down to choosing between the audio and the android upgrade, I'll keep the audio.

I really do not notice a difference, other than the fact my speakers have systematically gone bad, which I have fixed with some new foam surround....just this week the sub woofer was sounding bad so picked up a foam surround, disassembled everything and sounds great now.

I have an 04 gx and am looking at installing this unit. A few questions about it. What happens to the nav unit under the passenger seat ? Also what happens to the cd changer in the glove box ? And lastly is the rear entertainment unit a stand alone system or can you hook it into the new unit somehow ? Or does it go away ?

The nav unit is useless...I just left it there in case I sell the car and want to put the old screen back in. The CD changer can work - there is a Console button and there is a way to get to it there....but with Apple Carplay or bluetooth before that, I don't think it the CD unit has gotten any plays in 5 years anyway. I do not have a rear entertainment system...so not sure - there are connections for the android unit for external monitors and I think there is a way to project a video to them but I have not gotten into that part.

Yes, mine is a 2003 GX with Mark Levinson and Nav and you see the end result. I did end up installing Segey's custom firmware - I will do a review because it makes the stock software a lot better....I have not used Spotify but should work and display album like Apple CarPlay does...

Also I have seen other people's comments on other groups about Phoenix and bad customer service. I have used them and they were pretty good.... compared to the Chinese reseller I bought my unit from, they were stellar. The issue with buying direct from China is there is ZERO customer support if you have a problem. Not to mention a lot of Chinese in the menu. Sergey's firmware updated things, even the whole unit to Android 8 which I was not expecting and you can change themes right under settings.

I have been interested in this product for a while now, I have a 08 gx470. The one thing that dissapoints me is the old processor and 45 second cold boot load times. I wonder if phoenix auto would upgrade this unit with there hew hexacore chips for the GX470. Maybe with better android 8.0 and audio chips. I would be glad to pay extra.

I think there is a 6 core now available....on Aliexpress. From a cold-cold boot yea it does take some time but if you get in, drive, park, get in again it is fast. I think that is the sleep...I had mine on 8 hrs, but changed to 16 so we will see if faster.

Awesome video! I own the '06 GX470 and have been looking into this install as well. However, I live in Chicago with basically 9 months of winter, so the temperature issue on the unit definitely would be a deal breaker for me. Let us know if you figure out how get it to work!!! The buttons on the side work..the physical buttons, just the screen does not. If you buy it from Phoenix Auto and actually get customer support it likely would work. I have seen on their Facebook page where they have posted some firmware updates that people did get it to work. Since I did not buy it from them I am a little afraid to try their update but it seems they all get the unit from the same manufacturer in China so I would think it would work... I also see on alibaba you can get these units direct from the manufacturer for $300+

Kris Cone Oh okay, great! Yes, I’ve also noticed the units available for purchase directly from the manufacturer (Chinese origin?). However, in the fine print, it says the unit will be subject to import and customs fees. Might end up being the same cost from Phoenix.

is this the px3 or px6 version? which android os is this? early units may be buggy, later ones might be better. how is communication, service, and responsiveness of phoenix? did you get it from ebay, amazon, or aliexpress?

this is the PX3 in this video. I have since upgraded to the PX6. It is a little faster but I upgraded the old with Sergey's custom firmware and frankly I could not tell much of a difference. I even ditched the zlink app which is how the builtin carplay works and went back to the carlinkit usb dongle as it was more reliable connection wise. I bought off of Aliexpress. If You want ANY kind of support, do not buy from them because if something is not right it is going to be impossible to get help...or even figure out how to sent it back. I bought a PX6 from Phoenix and they did help me with some questions and issues. So unlike some others, my support experience was fine and if needed you can ship it back to a US address. These units appear to all be made by the same manufacturer and the software that comes with them all appears to be the same. Sergey's software is great and now includes over the air updates. That is the biggest difference maker I can see.

I bought the one for the Prado/Lexus GX470 on Aliexpress. The LX570 (or is it 470?) is the same thing as the LC100 Land Cruiser, right??? But I have bought several things off of aliexpress and I did get them shipped to me....I was a bit leery at first as it all comes from China.

my only AC problems are using the screen itself for changing the temperature. the physical buttons on the side work just fine however. So my suggestion is get the one with the buttons. it is easier anyway to push the physical button.

Hi Kris i was just wondering how you got the usb in the 12v port and the usb hub in the console?

the unit comes with 2 usb connections out of it, so you just run a connector to where you want. The cigarette lighter port is a great option since it has never been used. I did use a little trim saw to cut a channel in the base of the lexus trim to let the cord sit down in there so the door to the cigarette lighter could be closed easier. On the center storage area there is a small hole cut at one of the corners and just run a cord from the unit into the storage section. Put the little rubber mat over it and you do not really see it. then i used 3M tape to tape the 4 port hub up on the side so it is out of the way. Taped the tire pressure monitor as well. So far they have stuck there...

this version did not have it built in as it was a PX3. I have upgraded to the PX6 which does have CarPlay built in and I find it does connect pretty reliably now.

Hi - Does this Phoenix radio work with any other amp for the GX470 besides the Mark Levinson amp that comes with the SUV? My ML amp is shot and would rather buy a different amp rather than spend $400 to get the ML amp fixed. If you could suggest other amps that works with this Phoenix amp that I can use with GX470 I would appreciate it. I'm ok to change out the speakers as well but would not want to change out the entire wiring system. Thanks

It is $199.99 for their Geek Squad Total Tech package which is for a whole year of it and it includes free installs of radios, backup cameras as well as computer work. They have literally worked on my Audi about 6 times now trying to get a Carplay unit and backup camera to work....and it has not cost me anything more. So a pretty good value especially if you have several cars to work on and/or computers that need some work. The radio is the same but the apps and the image on its screen are different from mine. its screen is more modern and more current. I would like to know if you have modified the appearance of the screen with an update or is it so. I would like to change it on my radio

Hi Manu. I think what you are seeing is Carlauncher which is an app you can download from the google play store. However, since then I went with Sergey's custom firmware and I am just using one of his themes for that main view which has my car and the compass, gyro animations. He has a Facebook group you should join, and then use the Messenger feature to get in touch with him - he is the admin of the group. His firmware is $100 but it 1. updates your unit to Android 9, adds over the air updates, it fixes a lot of bugs in the crappy Chinese firmware that comes with the unit (for example that compass never worked before, now it works) and adds a lot of features and themes you can select right from the user Settings menu vs having to know the password and then guess what theme you are selecting by pressing on something with Chinese text. He is from Russia but you can see a lot of people are very happy with his firmware and support provided. I know it can be a little leery just sending someone $100 from wherever, but he is legit. I updated my PX3 and he gave me a free update for my PX6 and I sold my PX3 so that person also got his firmware. Also while I have the PX6 and it came with zLink I am still using the Carlinkit dongle (see amazon link in description) because it reliably connects and it does have OTA updates as well, farily often. Hi Chris, I had just spoke with a car stereo shop about obtaining this and getting this installed. They seemed to have concerns with using this with the Mark Levinson amplifier in my 2007 GX470. I don't want to lose that. Does your car also have the Mark Levinson stereo system and is this compatible? Also, would I lose functionality of the rear seat DVD player?

Mine has the Mark Levinson and it sounds fine to me... I do not have a rear DVD but there are RCA plus so if that is how the rear DVD connects, I would assume you can just use those plugins to connect and then play video from the unit. I do not know for sure however. At time point my kids have their iPhones and that is all they use anyway so those rear DVD units seem to be a bit obsolete...more than my cassette player I had is! I think you can have the video on a USB drive or download it to the hard drive, although that would take up a lot of the 32 GB of space.

@@Homediaryforhome It seems that your trim plate has different buttons than the ones pictured at Arizonaauto, or Rhino. You have the driver and passenger temp up and down buttons, whereas the ones pictures at Arizona and Rhino do not have those buttons. They just seem to have two fan buttons on the driver side only. Is yours the Arizona automotive brand?

@@forteeightyeight8158 I bought mine off of aliexpress.com. I have seen some with my buttons and even some with no buttons at all. I would suggest getting the physical buttons because 1. no guarantee the screen buttons will work to control things and 2. it is easier to just push a button vs tap the screen and then adjust. 1 vs 2 steps. Just getting them to help me with issues was a lost cause... It looks to me there is like one or two core manufacturers and then a lot of resellers. The newer unit that says will work in a GX470 and it is the 6 core 4GB unit with Android 8. And it says it has built in carplay (likely wired not wireless but I have another video on the wireless dongle you can get and it does work pretty good), AND I it says it has bluetooth 5 which is important because I think that lets you connect multiple Bluetooth devices like an OBD reader and your phone. The older units would not let you connect a Bluetooth OBD... The 6 core and 4 GB ram should make it more responsive as well. So, I would go for this unit. Not sure the difference between the ROM and Canbus options - I would email them before buying. I have bought several things now off of Aliexpress and I have always gotten what I bought. The issue is if you have to return anything...it is going to China. That is again why I suggest a US reseller, but if they do not have the unit and you want it now, this is an option. Good luck!

It is the external gps that just screws on the stems...works pretty good and batteries still going since install. There is an app that you should install to display the pressure...there should be some documentation for the devices you bought....

BestBuy in Bellevue - Cade was the main guy there (not sure if he is still there) but another guy put it in. Frankly, after pulling it out and putting it back in 2 times, it could be a DIY. If you want the camera then I would just pay the $199 GeekSquad deal and have them do it....

it does have some rca plugs so assuming you can navigate the wires to this head unit I think it should work...but not 100% sure. you just need to feed a video source to the display and it can produce a video source. I am in the process of upgrading to the PX6 unit so once I get that installed I will give a new review of the more updated version...

you can try to do a self install. It is not hard, just takes some time. Get the plastic tools to pop the console parts and you should be ok. The hardest part is taking the frame from the old and putting it on the unit and the top temp/clock display. Other than that it is plug and play. Back up camera would also be more time consuming and work...

Got the unit installed but the on-screen controls for the climate control (Air Conditioning) do not work. Have you figured out a solution? The hard buttons on the bezel control fan speed and maybe the temperature but "control" amounts to blindly tapping the buttons to adjust. Overall, nice upgrade but the lack of overall documentation is frustrating.

it can be that long on a cold boot...but the backup camera works without it booted up. If it is a warm boot it is just there so not bad. It would be nice to see the next version with 4gb ram, 64 gb hard drive and 8 core..... I have a Tesla Model 3 and that screen is nice and fast for any action. But hey...it is a 16 year old car that has internet, TPMS, Google/Waze or Apple maps and Apple Carplay so I can deal with it. Got the wireless Carplay dongle too....after some connection issues it seems to work and sound good.

Did you ever sort the Air Con not displaying issue? I had that in my Prado (essential the same as your vehicle) and i was using the wrong adapter. I had the 07 adapter when O swapped for the '04 adapter it worked. Mines an '05 prado.

I did not get it fixed but it is not that big of a deal. I did recently put in the OEM unit to check something out and I did confirm there is no way to change the temp on the screen, so i think it is just the way it was and the screen is mimicking that. I have the right harness in it.

Just create new images (like with Canva) formatted for your car screen and name the the exact same thing as what you see, upload them to that root folder and delete the other ones. Upgrade with Sergey's custom firmware he gives them to you and an animated boot logo too.

No the radio works without data and it has a built in GPS so you can use Waze or Google without internet access...it will just say searching for network and you do not get the Waze interactive type features. You can download an offline version of google maps as well...when you are home it will connect to your home wifi if you connect to it. If you have music downloaded to your phone or a usb drive you can play it from there without having to stream as well.

Have you had an issues since I can’t get any local installers to install this they all claim it has bad functionality. They will only install big name brands. I’m tempted to try and do it myself but I would rather return it if it will not work properly. Ex sound issues Ect.

You can totally install it yourself. the hardest part would be dealing with the backup camera if you have to put one in. Putting the unit in the GX is pretty straight forward. Just look at the back and plug in the USB to the right port and do not plugin an hdmi as that renders the USB useless. Pry up around the cup holder and then pry the side plastic trim. Once you get to the wood trim on each side pull towards you gently from the bottom and then up and those come out, unplug the connectors, and then unscrew the frame, etc. I have taken mine out about 5 times now for various reasons and plugs back in easily.

To get my bsckup camera i had to find the reverse wire in the harness under the passenger seat, tap that and run that to the BACK wire on the back of the head unit and tie those together. Only way i found to trigger the rear camera on reverse on my 2003 lexus. On a newer gx470 with oem backup camera it may be an easier way via software setting. Or a plug you can tap into behind the head unit.

Hi Sam. Do it - I am just not sure where the upgraded units might be....I contacted Phoenix Auto a week ago about support for the 6 core and the Lexus and said working on it but no timeline. I still think it is worth it with the existing units. On the install - BestBuy.... I actually had them install this, but then I did take it apart 2 times now. I ended up doing their total tech package with the geek squad which is $199/year but it includes installs of things like this, back up cameras and computer enhancement/cleaning. I put in a wireless CarPlay box in my 2011 Audi A6 and adding a front and back up camera tomorrow actually (that works with the same box I put in) so getting lots of work done for the $200.... The Audi has been in 5 times now as it ended up not being plug and play so that was all included int he $200. I just figured it was not worth my time, especially with the Audi which is harder to work on evidently, including running wires from both ends to the CarPlay box. So check that out. Metaltech bumper, powdercoated the stock rims and put KO2s on them, the screen and getting a new sexy TRD style grill. Now I will say gas mileage has suffered but it looks a lot cooler....

BestBuy did the initial install, but I have removed this and put the old unit in 2 times. It is not hard actually to do. The hardest part would be the back up camera and than is running the wires in the door sill.

@@mrdurtydawg I removed it because I plugged the old Nav unit back in to see if i could get the temperature controls to work via the screen (vs having to use the side buttons). The PhoenixAuto guy said it should work and plug the old unit in. Since I bought mine from a Chinese reseller, ZERO support....Phoenix I think has their own version of the software and at some point i may try updating mine with theirs...but I hve not done it yet. The buttons work for temp and they are most convenient to use anyway.

To be clear - the HVAC physical buttons all work - those buttons you see on the side. What does not work is raising the temp up or down using the screen itself. But this is no different than the original screen. Surprised Best Buy said no....I did this as part of the Total Tech Package...is that what you asked about? Bottom line, it actually could be done yourself. The hard part likely would be the backup camera, but putting the unit in is not that hard. I have taking the new one out 3 times now and connected my old one to try to get that temp issue to work. Go for the newer unit if you can... 6 core.

They said that they were not supposed to install items like this and said that I would need to take it to a custom audio installer. I assume they thought that it would be much more complex of an install than it really is. Perhaps if I show it to them in person they would do it.

It is not bad. I have been running it through a 4 port usb hub and it was connecting and disconnecting through that set up but if I plugged it into the new usb plug I put into the cigarette lighter it was fine....pretty responsive for sure. I will try to do a new video with the wireless carplay dongle I have.

Update on the wireless CarPlay. I had a lot of issues with it disconnecting and even freezing the screen with a bunch of lines. The only way to fix that was to turn off the car and restart the device. The retailer sent me a file for the most recent firmware and it seems to have fixed the disconnection issue. Will play around worth it more this weekend and see but initial results look good. It will auto connect after maybe 10 seconds or so and CarPlay works good once it is connected.

I bit the bullet and got an iPhone 7 just to play around with. Initially, it was studdering very badly when using any map apps and listening to any streaming service. Very unusable to the point where it freezes the head unit and eventually crashes. I played with it more after work. I change the setting from either speed/fluent to Compatibility. It made a huge difference. I think the issue is when carplay is in full-screen mode. When carplay is in the regular 7-8” mode, pretty much half screen, carplay is very fluent and a joy to use. The experience is much better than Android auto where it still studders in speed/fluent/compatibility mode. This is all hardwire.

there was some static early on but do not hear that now. Even the wireless is clear for me. Check the settings icon in the Autokit app (too left gear icon before it connects to a device). There is s way to update the firmware....with the wireless one you can do over WiFi but I got a more recent update direct and downloaded to a usb and plugged it into the device and it works much better now.

It sounds fine….but I have also had to fix my ML speakers with new foam several times. Some people complain about the sound, I think it is fine unless you go too loud. Bottom line for me is I like all of the other stuff you get and it is worth it if you are keeping your rig for some time. I did get a 2020 Kona for another driver and it has CarPlay built in an it works, added a wireless dongle and it is now wireless. So the convenience of having integrated apps is big, especially for a car that is approaching 20 years old.

there are some settings in the back end menu as well as the equalizer. You will find things like bluetooth to your phone has a lower volume than the radio, but that has been that way on every car I have, except the Tesla Model 3 which seems to do an outstanding job with all kinds of media...now it includes Netflix on the 15 inch screen which is sweet.

One thought on this - The functionality may be equal to what was there before - Since I do not have the OEM unit it, going from memory, but isn't the ONLY way to change the temperature on the 2003 Lexus GX via the physical buttons on each side of the display? Same for the defrost for front and rear. If anyone has the OEM, please confirm. If so, then maybe the limitation is what was available before. The physical buttons work on the Tesla unit, as does some of the things I think I could control via the old screen (again going by memory here). What works - fan speed, flow position, recirc and auto on/off. What does not work on the screen is temp up/down, defrost. So, for at least my year, worst case, I am in the same position functionality wise as I was before the change....Yes it is a bit irritating I have the potential to press the screen to change and it does not work, but the physical buttons are there. Anyway....still searching. I saw another video that said you need to connect a circuit board from the old unit to the new. have not tried this. Also adding a video on the wireless carplay that is now working good after updates, so check it out.

So you essentially have all the functionality as before but you just can’t adjust a few functions from the touch screen....you can still adjust but with the physical buttons on the android unit you have? I originally thought you couldn’t change the temperature at all....thanks for following up. You had the 2003 with Nav from the factory correct? This is what I have now.

Dallas and Fam - correct you can change everything you need with the physical buttons, so yes same functionality as the oem, just can’t do it from the screen for the temperature. Some other things do work from the screen-fan speed, fan direction (face vs feet) and turn off the ac compressor and the recirculated air vs outside. Trying to remember but the functions may have been the only thing you could have done on the old Lexus screen. Sorry it was not clear. It is just an irritation for my slight ocd that everything does not work as I think it should. If it shows I think it should work, regardless of the fact I probably would use the physical buttons 95% of the time anyway. 👍

Is is a change in the theme....I can't tell you which one because they are all in Chinese, I just selected and rebooted to see what it was.... I have learned there is a Russian guy that is selling a complete custom firmware package that includes 20 different themes for $100. Sergey is his name. I am in the process of upgrading to the PX6 (had to send the one unit I got back) and I may do it for that. It still works…but I have had the temperature buttons on both sides break - it appears to be a manufacturing defect in the plastic as it broke where the button panel is screwed into the plastic housing itself. It could be my son just pressed on them hard but I doubt it. I took it apart and glued it but not sure how long it will last. Since I need the physical buttons in my 2003 Lexus, it is an issue for me. The reseller I got it from will not stand behind their 1 year warranty, so I am trying to at least see if I can buy a replacement plastic frame from ZhiFang, the manufacturer…but so far they have not responded to any of my requests. If you use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto no need to a hotspot. The data connection allows you to use Apple Maps, Waze, google, etc…and frankly 98% of the time you would host be using CarPlay, if you are an iOS person. I still think it is worth it given the functionality it gives you but the button thing needs to get fixed. Not sure who else has this issue. There is a facebook group on this topic and Sergey, one of the admins does sell custom firmware for the unit that I highly recommend as it fixes most of the software issues. facebook.com/groups/tesla.style.FW.HU/?ref=share.

@@davidlesley8884 yes Carplay uses your cell phone for data. it is basically a way to display apps to the screen it is connected to. Not every app on your phone can be used with Carplay, but apps like Waze, Google Maps, Pandora, Audible, Music work. Bigger buttons, less functionality to minimize distractions....but no other hotspot is needed. Your phone is the hotspot. All of these units from what I can tell that everyone sells are made by ZhiFang. Phoenix and others are just resellers of the unit. Sergey's custom firmware fixes a lot of the software problems people experience with the stock software.

Great question. The Apple Carplay is a bit buggy. I know the newer units now have Carplay or Android Auto built into them, so no need for the separate dongle. Perhaps someone with that newer unit can comment. I think the plugin version is more reliable. The other irritant is Waze as the default nav app (the top menu button) crashes now. I have not gone in to see if there is an update but will try to do over the weekend. With Carplay Waze works fine however, so I think it is the android app on the device that is the problem. Would I do it again? Yes. I would however buy the newer unit with 6 cores and 4 gb or ram. You can find it on aliexpress....

E.M. H Yea the Lexus is a good choice - maybe a 2008 or 2009. I just picked ours up from the body shop after someone rear ended me - got a new hitch and paint on the bumper (which needed repainting anyway) and it was a little over $1000 - no other damage. Rock solid and no real maintenance issues. The car almost looks new and it is a 17 year old car at this point with 148,000 miles and can probably go for 200,000 more....

you can - you just need to connect to your phones hotspot for wifi, or have a separate wifi dongle....but it has a full web browser or you can download the android RU-vid app.

the PX6 is the most up to date version with 4GB or RAM and 6 core. older versions for the GX were the PX3 which was 2 GB ram and 4 core.

There is a setting to select aftermarket or original so I assume but I have not tried it. Mine is 2003 and had no camera originally...

I see on the newest unit (6 core) it says does not support the OEM camera....so beware of that.

Utilizing the backup camera is possible but it is a much more involved process than running a new cable to the back for a new camera. The process involves tapping on to the camera feed at the ECU level. The main reason as to why the OEM camera does not work is because the Lexus camera runs under 6v and not 12v. I took the route of installing a new camera. Mainly because new cameras have much better picture given newer lens technology.

I think but you need to check the retailers site....it will tell you what make and model they work in. Mine works in a GX and a Prado which is the GX rebadged as a Toyota in Europe and elsewhere....

Yea I think not available yet for Lexus... And per my experience if you are in the US I suggest buying from someone like Phoenix Radio so you get some support. Otherwise, it goes into the black hole of no communication...

The faster processor and more ram would be a welcome addition.

All in you are looking at probably $700 to $800 depending on what you want - TPMS, AppleCarplay, etc. The unit I got is less than $500 now but there is a newer one withi6 core, 4GB that i would suggest getting.

Installed px6 unit In my 2003 gx470 last week and I’m returning it full refund. My Tesla radio climate control (physical) buttons don’t lit up when headlights auto/manual are engaged. It’s really difficult to navigate climate settings at night when you can’t see the AC buttons. Installed 2x just to make sure all wirings are in correct order. Between Phoenix tech support and what I discover on net, it’s been frustrating experience. It’s really shame...everything works except for button backlight problem.
