Saw it with my girlfriend, we're both 25! Excellent stuff! Long Live Sir Paul McCartney and Long Live WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love how they took a moment to appreciate Jimmy and Linda and Denny, etc. Our showing was also quite quiet, and the songs didn't have the PUNCH that they should have had with more volume. I used to find bootleg snippets on youtube 10 years ago and blast them at max volume! I was hoping to recreate that experience in the theater, but I was happy nontheless! The voice overs and interviews sounded like they were conducted after the gang had shared a bottle of scotch, or a jazz cigarrette.........I agree that it was a bit intrusive. My dream is for a comprehensive Wings documentary to take all the full tapes/performaces without the voice overs and make them into something new. That being said, I am also glad to have this in it's pure form.
The volume at my theatre was way to quiet as well. I feel like I started to notice it less as it went on but it still bothered me the whole time to sole extent.
I liked it quite a bit. It was a bit short, but the Backyard segment was my favorite part. I liked how they included Sweet Little Sixteen, which wasn’t on the audio release, although they omitted Blackbird, which was on the audio release. The audio level at my theater was fine, although like others have said, Denny was pretty difficult to understand most of the time. Also I had no idea Jimmy’s Scottish accent was so strong lol but I still understood him fine. Paul’s introductory and interstitial segments were nice too. Sometimes he can get a bit awkward, but his humor really came through and helped mesh things together well.
The "Junior's Farm" footage was used for a promo clip. It wasn't part of the original "One Hand Clapping" documentary film. CD 1 of the new 2 CD set is basically the same as the film, except the song "Suicide" is in the documentary. I heard they went out of their way to keep the voiceovers intact in the 2024 film. They actually extracted the voiceovers from the original documentary, and inserted them into the newly remastered audio. I agree, it would have been much better without the voiceover narration. That might be a key reason why no one wanted to air the film, back in 1975.
I felt the sound quality of the music was excellent in the showing I saw. However the sound of Jimmy and Denny's interviews were incomprehensible especially with Denny's strong Birmingham accent. Being British I could make out most of it and I guess the Americans would struggle.
Hi Mr. Mayo, Excellent review, some very good points. The backyard segment made it for me as well, along with the cabaret part with Paul in a tux. Wish that they put suicide on the double lp and sweet little sixteen on the 7". Have a great day!
Great review Mr.Mayo on Wings One hand clapping! Your right Mr.Mayo crank it up !!!! Turn that volume up let's rock out to jet Soily. 1985. Love the backyard tape in backyard at Abbey Road Studio! Glad Paul let this out on the big screen!!! And have that concert footage! The only thing about Wings they changed the band members to much they didn't stick around long except the original members!! Thanks Mr.Mayo for your honest opinion on One hand clapping!! Lots of great songs on this album! Glad everyone had a great time!!! Let's hope They put Wings in the Rock'n'roll hall of fame soon!!! They were the 1970s!!! Thanks Mr Mayo!!!
"One Hand Clapping" played once today in my area, earlier today, and I can't find any other nearby showings. Your review is informative, and I'll probably wait for it to come out on Blu Ray/DVD.
The audio wasn't great at my theater either, except for the cool surround sound during "1985." And I couldn't understand much of the voiceovers either, so those were mostly annoying distractions. Otherwise though, I loved the show, dodgy video quality and all. Hopefully we'll get it on blu-ray soon so we can play it as loudly as we want.
Enjoyed your honest review Joe. I live where there are no showings of this film so I wish Paul would have included this as a DVD in with the album and 45. I would have paid extra for it for sure. Take care !
How can a rock 'n' roll movie not play the music loudly? Plus, isn't this available on the Band on the Run Archive? I would have preferred a Concert for Kampuchea release - the entire Wings and Rockestra performance.
Haven't seen One Hand Clapping, just the outtakes available on the McCartney Archive series. Maybe I've forgotten the band member commentary breaking in on the songs, but that seems really dumb, considering we're supposed to be enjoying the musical performances. They could have included those remarks between numbers.
We got lucky here in Finland as we get english subtitlers. Theathre was very small, so it was sell out! I have hoped more reacton from audience, but at least there were some hands clapping in the end. I did have to start it.
The film at least had that one really old “Suicide” song from long ago, which unfortunately isn’t on the audio release, boo. There might be more the film had that the audio doesn’t too, I just can’t remember
Sounds do vary from theater to theater, plus maybe some of us old folks can't handle it too loud. I keep saying it's Paul doing his thing, he likes the rehearsals and practice. It was still Paul at his best.
I drove 2 1/2 hours to see it and I loved it! I really enjoyed it, I just needed subtitles for some of the talking (Denny, lol!). The accents were a bit thick. I also wondered why some songs were left off. Overall great to see though!
the music in this "movie" is brilliant but i found McCartney very annoying...i know its only short but his ego seemed to make it last forever !, the "backyard" section just proves that he loves to be filmed even if hes not doing much !...great songs tho !...just to let everyone know..."the backyard" section is now on Spotify
