I got some questions about the case.... check it out here: www.through-u.com/

Squarp is a company that specializes in making sequencers - Pyramid and Hermod are the only two products it makes. Pyramid, which has been around for a while, was designed for "regular" MIDI compatible instruments (though it has a few CV inputs and outputs). Hermod, its smaller, modular brother - released a few months ago - was designed with Eurorack control in mind.
This focus shows, and both sequencers have a massive sequencing feature set: high resolution sequencing, long flexible pattern lengths, polymetry and polyrhythm support, Euclidean sequencing, plenty of MIDI effects and much more - all things you typically see in a DAW, not a standalone hardware sequencer, and certainly not the one built into your synth…
A flexible sequencer can completely transform what an instrument can do - your gear won't sound the same when it's controlled by these two. The question is - how easy is it to get to these features and use them? Successful user interface design makes powerful features accessible with a quick, usable workflow. In this clip I give an overview of the top features of both sequencers, and show how to actually use them, so that you can make up your mind if Squarp have successfully balanced power and usability.
This review includes some of the top new features in Pyramid's beta OS version 3.0, just released last week.
NOTE: Occasionally I’ll try out affiliate marketing and include affiliate links. This means that I may earn a commission when you click on or make purchases via affiliate links. The content of this clip is entirely my opinion, and was not paid for or dictated in any what by the company creating the gear. Without addressing the particulars of products shown here as they might be under NDA, gear shown on this channel may be either sent by the manufacturer, on loan for review or bought at a discount.

Great video as usual. Two more columns of cv jacks on Hermod would enable a lot more in a package that already has a lot. Could have more polyphony without sacrificing CV. Would be nice if they sold expansion modules like Expert Sleepers FX-1 for the FH1/2.

Thanks for all the info and jams. Just diving into the modular world. Started out with a mother32 and now have a clouds and peaks clone. I want to get into general sequencing. I was pretty set on that key step pro but after seeing this the Hermosillo seems like the right choice. I already have an older key step so the midi host on this thing seems like a good Idea. Plus the sequencer on this thing seems way more intuitive and useful than the key step pro

Thanks for your overview and sharp focus on the display of the hermod. You mentioned that the amount of steps/resolution during a live recording is even higher than 64. could you explain this? Can you record long unquintized sequences exceeding 64 steps?
@loopop
@loopop 6 лет назад
The live recording resolution goes down to 24ppqn - so if you slowed down the tempo a lot, you could cram a nice long sequence in there.

Hi, Is it possible to send clock and reset, maybe also run signals over gate or cv outs to other sequencers in your modular with the Hermod? Thanks for the video. Regards
@Lcrymlgy
@Lcrymlgy 2 года назад
I've got a pyramid and I'm trying to decide between just getting a MIDI to CV module or a second hand Hermod and.. this hasn't helped much making that decision, but it was a great video as always XD I still feel like the pyramid has greater power to write "songs", and that hermod is weird in that it's too powerful for its own interface: it _can_ do full tracks, but it seems _hard_ to enter a score. A lot harder than just loading a midi file in the pyramid. It seems great for more usual "modular" stuff like generative patches, and the MIDI FX are powerful. It's like it packs a lot of punch, but nothing I can't get close enough with a couple other modules I already have (a turing machine plus a quantizer, for example). Not saying that it doesn't bring a _lot_ more to the table, just that I'm not sure I can justify the HP for the intended use. Of course, on the other hand, I haven't found a midi-to-cv module half as interesting (except maybe the Endorphin.es shuttle control, but that only has USB midi)
@jpromano_
@jpromano_ 4 года назад
So I have a question: if your could have only one of the two keeping modular as an option which one do you choose? Thanks

Is there anything like this, but more oriented at working in conjunction with synts and DAWs? I have a couple of analog synths and midi devices, and was looking at something like to volca FM or similar, that is not analog, does not need to have a sequencer but has presets and it is small. Not sure it even exist; beside the Volca FM
@alessiocapurro175
@alessiocapurro175 4 года назад
Maybe something like the old Yamaha QY70 or QY100? They're roughly the same size of the Volcas, all digital, with a very capable - albeit fiddly - sequencer built in and presets for both patterns and songs. They can be found on the used market for quite cheap too. Not sure if that's the kind of thing you're looking for though.

Hi. This is an amazing channel, really love it! Question: On the Pyramid, can you lock the pads to a particular key/scale when choosing midi notes to sequence so anything you choose, will always be in key? I'd assume so for such a powerful sequencer but I need to be sure. Cheers

Can you clarify connecting hardware synths to this? This is likely a daft question, but I get confused when you say there's 2 MIDI outs and therefore can control up to 32 hardware synths. I'm seriously considering picking this up (it's between this and a Seq). Right now I have a bunch of synths (TR-8S, MS-20, Volca's, Minilogue, etc.) whom I have going through a T8 thru box into a BeatStep Pro which in turn I have going through my 18i20 interface. I also have audio out for all these to record both audio and midi in Logic. Why I'm looking to upgrade is I'd like to sequence out more than two synths at a time (three if you count me using the BSP drum sequencer) - thus that's why I'm looking to upgrade my sequencer. I want each synth to be on it's own sequencer. I'm assuming Pyramid was basically build to do this - is that the case, and would you suggest this over the Seq, or are we getting into cost / workflow preference now? Thanks a million for all your videos - you've helped me level up my knowledge several times, cheers!

They're mostly about using the FX for generative music. I do a lot of that, and I'm curious about how much of my Ableton Live technique an translate. Hmm, and I thought I'd found the clear winner in my short list for "next sequencer purchase" in the Deluge, but the screen on the Pyramid offers a level of usability that may give it the advantage. But I'm a big fan of the two-dimensional, context-switching grid layout of the Deluge. Tough call. Between the Pyramid and the Deluge, which would you say has more intuitive controls?
@loopop
@loopop 6 лет назад
I would say neither are intuitive immediately (except the obvious Deluge piano roll grid). Both require that you invest some time in becoming proficient with them (luckly you have my videos on both so it shouldn't take more than 30 minutes ;). Once you're over that hill, you should decide whether the sound engine and quick access to all the rows is important to you (=Deluge) or whether you find the additional sequencing features in Pyramid more compelling. It's a very hard choice for sure...
@kmontzka
@kmontzka 6 лет назад
I had the same dilemma between the Deluge and Pyramid. I chose the Pyramid and am very glad I did. As he mentioned, it takes a little time to learn but it really is intuitive, especially after the recent update. I also like being able to see more information on the screen, as opposed to the small screen of the Deluge. Just my two cents.

very nice overview about the power of these sequencers, but your video lacked a bit in the main question: does all this power come at the expense of ease of use? is it easy to put in a sequence and alter it? how do you like to work with it? are you actually using the Pyramid for sequencing your gear or are you using other (easier) sequencers?
@loopop
@loopop 6 лет назад
Oh I thought the video WAS the answer to the question - that’s why I showed the workflow for each of the advanced features. The answer to your question is, for me, yes, I absolutely will use it going forward, not for everything but certainly when a built in sequencer can’t handle what I need - but I showed the workflow because for you or someone else it might not be worth the trouble

Any chance you've seen the kickstarter (I know, I know) NDLR project? www.kickstarter.com/projects/thendlr/the-ndlr-a-multi-part-polyphonic-arpeggiator Touted as a Super Arpeggiator & Polyphonic Fun (re: sequencing chords), so not quite the same, but would love to hear your thoughts when it's out.

Please, can you confirm this ? on one track I can have 32 sequences/patterns, not more? I ask because I know that changing project just cut the sequencer for a moment ; 32sequences per instrument per project may not be enough for me :/ Very very nice review, in fact probably one of the best pyramid review for now on youtube
@loopop
@loopop 6 лет назад
TheOrangepeak thanks very much. If the patterns concept is confusing just ignore it - you have 64 different tracks, and you can store their on off states in 32 different sequences
@LouisSerieusement
@LouisSerieusement 6 лет назад
ah thanks since my comments I understood their concept of "sequences" (the video was not finished when I posted) ; but still I don't get this : is the number of pattern (=loop) per track/per project is limited ?
@loopop
@loopop 6 лет назад
Like I said the concept of pattern is confusing and best ignored for beginners.... you’ve got plenty of tracks (64) with unlimited length. Pattern just lets you store different versions of the same track
@LouisSerieusement

ok I'm not getting it, why did they name things with those words wich means other things XD and it's weird because I'm french, like the creators of this box, and I don't get their logic ; anyway I will buy one for sure so I'll see when I get one :) thank you really for your review and for taking the time to reply :)

So which one is the easiest to use, most well thought out would you say?
@loopop
@loopop 6 лет назад
they're both well thought out for their purpose. Pyramid is easier and more powerful for sure, but if you need the CV outputs for modular, you need the outputs because Pyramid only has 3. Or you could get Pyramid and a midi to cv module. or both...
@Kkidzz
@Kkidzz 5 лет назад
@@loopop I am thinking the Pyramid with Expert Sleepers' FH-2 module plus a FHX-8CV expander would give you the best of both worlds: handle all your Eurorack AND external hardware at the same time.

So many menus and such a tiny non colour screen with so few controls. I want a sequencer that will be more inspiring and creative than a DAW but without too much complexity and menu diving. It seems so hard to find one that balances features and simplicity. Most seem either really limited 1 x 8 step sequencers with no control of note length or crazy deep sequencers that require infinite menu diving and complex knowledge of using them. I really like to be able to see what's going on in my sequence and edit it easily. I can't find anything that I appeals to me really.

I agree, I tried the Koma, but it is so very limited in scales and the lack of precision on the notes not being shown. Insane blinking lights over 8 or 16 steps and or crazy menu diving is also a big turn-off for me. I was really looking forward to the Five12 Vector, but it seems a bit divey as well. Polyend seemed very nice, but kind of limited polymetrically and w/o various tempos on each track + menu diving too. My only solution seems to be multiple small unique ones ran by the same clock.

Big Thanx to You! Would You rather consider making a video on How to control Hardware such as the Octatrack or Analog Rytm or anything else for that matter , with Pyramid.

And Do you think it is more appropriate with Pyramid or Polyend?

Hi and thanks! Doesn't this video do that? What else would you like to see?
@loopop
@loopop 6 лет назад
They are very different - it's like they're on two sides of the spectrum: one on the side of ease of use (Polyend Seq), and the other on power (Pyramid)
@trimusfree
@trimusfree 6 лет назад
I'm more encline on Polyend seq at this time . I'd like to have a master clock from One Seq to rule 'em all ( ie octatrack , AR MK2) and to control future purchase such as Mother 32 and DFAM.What seems more appropriate ? Thanx
@loopop
@loopop 6 лет назад
Both have master clock, so that shouldn't be a deciding factor. It's about ease of use vs power (and price). Both will rule your synths, just differently...

Hermod or Pyramid for controlling an Analog Four and Digitone (+ one modular eurorack synth)..? A used Pyramid i can get for a little more than a new Hermod. Clock used will be from the eurorack btw.. Opinions?

didn’t really get a sense of ease of use from your video. i own pyramid 2 and i’m terrified of it, yet to turn it on.
@loopop
@loopop 6 лет назад
no worries, it doesn't bite. just go step by step through the manual - it's actually quite good if you follow it. the two mental obstacles for me were mono vs poly mode and what a sequence is. learn mono poly and ignore sequences for starters - things should fall in place from there. hopefully.

how would you compare Pyramid to Elektron boxes in terms of ease of use? I used to own Octatrack, which has powerful MIDI sequencer, but ended up selling it, because everytime I didn't use it for a month or so, I would have to re-learn all those button combinations. Got tired of that interface, eventually. Would you say that Pyramid is somewhat more user friendly? Thanks!
@loopop

I think pyramid is slightly more user friendly but both have a learning curve and will require a bit of relearning if you left them for a while.

Love your vids but I'm wondering why in this video and the dedicated Pyramid video you don't demonstrate how the touchpad actually works? Is it so underwhelming that you don't want to show an example of it? Thanks
@loopop
@loopop Год назад
Thanks! It's been so long since I made these that I honestly don't remember for sure, but I'm willing to bet I showed how to use the touch pad to record cc's in at least the dedicated video, if not both. I didn't find the touchpad underwhelming technically at all; whether it fits a given workflow is a different issue.

I recall Jade (Dawless Jammin') mentioning that the Pyramid was buggy at one point when she tried it, but that seemed to be a while ago, and I think she was keen to try it again with the hope those has been sorted (the impression being that she really liked it otherwise). I'm still watching the vid, but I'm guessing you didn't run into any problems?

Kieren Moore no none. Hermod behaved odd just once but I couldn’t replicate it ... maybe it was user error...

@loopop

Better and faster workflow dedicated for easy performance and jamming. I agree with you a daw or iPad can do practically everything - these units are a luxury - a physical embodiment of a subset of features optimized for a specific workflow. If you’re fine with a daw and iPad you just saved yourself a lot of money ;)
