A review of Rode's NTG-4+ shotgun microphone (same sound as the NTG4 but adds a lithium battery). Includes various tests - vocals, nature, phantom power, battery power, low pass, high boost, comparison with NTG2 and Sennheiser ME66/K6.
Please ensure you watch (listen) to this video on a decent device. Phones and tablets have terrible speakers so you won't hear it properly. Most laptop speakers are a bit rubbish too. We suggest some good quality, neutral headphones would be best.
You may also like to watch our unboxing video at:

If you'd would be interested in buying these mics and supporting this channel - every little bit helps with our costs - then please buy the mics via our Amazon links for which we get a small commission:

Thank you so much! This is my favorite comparison review of these microphones on all of RU-vid!!! :-) I find the A->B comparisons in the voice over booth so helpful for judging which sound I prefer, and the comparisons of self-noise and output levels are really useful as they give an indication of how much gain each microphone would need (comparatively) and how much noise they introduce to the signal. This should be the standard procedure for comparing microphones. Now we just need Sound Devices to give you one of their multi-track recorders so you have access to some of the best preamps available. Excellent video!!!

Glad you liked it! Alas I no longer have access to the sound booth!!

Sure did, I've watched it many times :-) Too bad about the sound booth. I've ordered some parts and will eventually endevour make a fairly low cost DIY semi-portable sound booth for voice overs. If it turns out okay I might give you the parts list.

ME66 / K6 is my choice! nice crisp sound. The NTG2 does sound better than the 4 in this test. I have the NTG2 and now getting the Sennheiser ME66 in a few days. I was contemplating between the rode NTG4 plus and the ME66. From this test I could hear that the ME66 sounds the best to my ears. Thank you for the review.

A very realistic test, thanks for that. Well, in my opinion the clearer sound of the Sennheiser is based on the missing Hz in the deep. Like...most people push an EQ upwards to change a sound - but they could do that in the other direction...but 95% didn't realise that way of sound-design. Here we have the same problem. But the difference between the NTG2 and 4 ? Not worth to upgrade for me, so this comparison was very helpfull, thanks again! Michael

I found your opinion at the end very helpful and unbiased [no pun intended]. ...still don't know which one to get though :-) I suppose, like you I like my raw audio to have the right amount of "top"..but a little bass can mean a stronger signal.....hmmm...will need to listen to all of this again with cans on. This is a great comparison, thanks for putting together. All would make a perfectly usable recording, but I find myself preferring the ME66 in your test. This is worrying as its a mic I've never really liked, although I accept comparing it to a MKH60 is unfair. To my tastes there is too much LF which robs it of clarity, but that can be improved with EQ. What cannot sadly be improved is the noise. All said and done, I will still probably add one to my mic bag, as for the money it's difficult to go wrong.
@TubeShooterMag
@TubeShooterMag 9 лет назад
JackPott554 thanks. I'm curious to know what your preferred mic over the ME66 is (within a reasonable price bracket)?
@JackPott554
@JackPott554 9 лет назад
TubeShooterMag Tricky, truth is I don't love any of them at this price point, but the NTG4 is probably the one I would have if you put a gun to my head, based on value. I don't really like the MKH 416 either. I find the 8060 hard to beat, its just superb- but it is nearly four times the price. I think its a classic case of getting what you pay for. Which is not to say one couldn't do something perfectly reasonable with any of the mics at this end of the market, but once I was spoiled by the MKH 60 and then 8060, it changed my frame of reference. I'm a sound engineer by trade...

I am pretty sure I wouldn't buy the NTG4+ because of the built-in battery. A microphone of this quality should outlast that battery. I've go a mic that is nearly 20 years old that still works great. I would probably go for the one with the AA removable battery. I can use phantom and self-powered with my various recorders. Nice audio test ... the NTG2 sounds better to me ...
@TubeShooterMag
@TubeShooterMag 4 года назад
Fair point but if I recall correctly the mic will power via standard phantom power as well so even when the battery's dead the mic still can be used.

hi, I just bought a brand new RODE NTG 4. I wanted to try out my new microphone by using my audio interface, steinberg ci2+, which feed the mic with phantom power. and for the result, i got no signal at all!! even the mic didn't turn on at all. i called the seller and he told me that it will only turn on if i connect the mic to a camcorder. is it true? or is it an issue from the mic itself? (have tried my phantom for another condenser and it worked!!)

OK, I've had a look. Are you certain you switched the input on the CI2+ to "mic" and not "line", and had the "high z" turned off? Was phantom power definitely turned on? Do you have another device you can plug the NTG4 into and check that the mic is working OK with that?

TubeShooterMag Thankyou so much for your reply, i really appriciate your effort to check the ci2+ just for my specific case. How well would the ME66 operate plugged directly into a camera with XLR?
@TubeShooterMag
@TubeShooterMag 9 лет назад
***** I don't mean to be rude but I have no idea how you expect me to answer this! "How well?" is not a question that can realistically be quantified in absolute terms. It's a good mic so it works "very well", generally. What I would say is that, as far as I understand your query, that's exactly what most people would do with it (I'm presuming that by "a camera with XLR" you mean a camcorder with XLR balanced audio inputs. I don't know of any *camera* that offers XLR inputs apart from perhaps the GH4 but even that's via an optional adapter box) The quality of recording would be affected by the quality of the camera's pre-amps just as any mic or other sound source would. You need the K6 powering module to go with your ME66 of course, they tend to come as a pair.

Windy sound? You mean actual wind noise or something else? If the former, turn on the low cut filter (it's one of the buttons). If that fails, put the foam windshield on. If that fails put a furry windjammer on. If the noise isn't actually wind then you'll need to describe it so I can come up with suggestions.

+TubeShooterMag It is not an actual wind, It's more or less a humming sound in between dialogues. Especially indoor shoot...

Curious. Is the sound only there between dialogue (does it rise in volume as the dialogue ends and fall when it re-starts) or is it a constant level? Does it sound like a mains voltage hum (50 or 60Hz depending on where in the world you are?)

Exactly, it rises when dialogue ends... Someone suggested, was the voltage that was too low I was using 12, now i use 48 which the mic needs and it's better...thanks a lot for your help. I keep you posted.

+hillsTV Oh gosh yes, no wonder it was being a bit peculiar. Standard phantom power for pro mics is 48V. Do let me know if they issue's fully solved.

What external recorder did you plug the mics in to?

That was so long ago I can't remember. I suspect I used my Canon XF200 camcorder.

great video i got a camcorder sony x70, what mic can i use in the mic holder that comes with it?

A short one, so that it doesn't stick out too far at the front and end up in the picture when you're zoomed wide. I don't know the dimensions of the mic holder, specifically how wide it is, but you probably want something like an Audio Technica ATR875R but check the diameter first to see it'll fit.

Depends which one you get! I don't know if Sennheiser do a suitably short shotgun mic though.

You won't if the mic you buy ends up showing in the top right corner of the screen when in its holder!

+Empire Films It's up to you. Clearly I can't decide for you. It depends on your budget and what sound you like the best. Assuming by "Sennheiser" you mean the ME66/K6 then they're both good mics.

the Sennheiser is undoubtfully betterin terms of clarity, S/N/ ratio and direciotnal pattern.

As expected, the Sennheiser wins at everything - except, surprisingly (for me), null rejection.
