After watching this review many many times (and many other reviews too), I bought this white 39mm version. My first Rolex. Love the simplicity and the class without the blink 👍🏼
Congrats. Really tempted by this, prefer the bezel, applied crown and hands to those on the explorer but keep coming back to the explorer... cant decide between them
That simple and perfect dial symmetry and depth of that silver'ish ivory white dial is undeniable. It also helps that it was only in production for 2 years, making it a rare piece for collectors.
Thanks for this great and detailed review. I was lucky to find one of these at a local AD and went home, watched this video, and then called them with my credit card in hand right away!
I love the history about you wanting to buy a Seiko and ending up buying this beautiful Rolex. Glad you have it because I can enjoy this video. Congratulations.
The full complement of batons is nice for the white, but for the others, the mix of 3/6/9 lume and plain batons elsewhere creates a clearer orientation while also contributing to the subtle mature mood of the OP watch face
I would have had a hard time to decide between the black version and my rhodium dial OP, with the blue pips, if it would have been available two years earlier! 😉 The OP 39 is one of the best every day watches on the market and rivals the new Omega Aqua Terra.
I am seriously considering adding this to my collection. I've never owned a Rolex and toyed with the idea of getting a Sub until I learned how overpriced (and hard to get) they were. I gave up on Rolex for good...until I saw this 39mm beauty. Absolutely everything I want in a Rolex--although I want the black dial version--and nothing that I don't want.
Might want to make that decision soon. This 39mm OP with the white dial will only continue to go up in price after the news of them being discontinued.
@@ausmoney20 Thank you. I've decided to pass on it. Although I still like the watch, I do not think it is worth the prices I'm seeing on the grey market. No AD's in my area have it. So, I've looked to other options beyond the brand.
Thanks for your review and insight into this watch. I really like this watch. For me, this is all the Rolex I'd ever need. I don't need a date, just a simple clean 3 hand movement that maintains dial symmetry and simply tells time well in a modest but high-quality build. And, I like the fact it's a bit of an underdog in the Rolex catalog which makes it a very different choice to the mainstream choices that are hyped up as you say. Really like the white dial, best color of all the dial colors. Can't tell in the video, but did the lume have a green or blue glow to it? I would like to get this watch because it's a modern version of my vintage 6426 Oyster Precision. But, because they are visually so similar, I have a hard time feeling a strong urge to get one at this time. If I were to get one, not sure if I want to get the 39mm or 36mm? My 6.875" wrist can handle a 39mm no problem, but maybe a slightly more understated size of 36mm might be the way to go.. Can't imagine any difference between them other than the size and proportions.
Wing Yip I’d suggest getting the 39mm variant . I wear a DJ41 without any issues, and my wrist is the same size as yours! Looks fine, feels great, as the weight is more widely spread out (making it less top heavy, easier on the stride) I’m guessing by now you’d have one. Which one did you get? I’m too torn between the white and the black dial. I’m a black dial kinda guy but I want to put it on a strap and wear it with black, blue, brown, caramel straps ! The bark and jack video just made me fall in love with it!
I have the same wrist size and I bought an OP 36 black dial with white 3,6,9 Indices back in 2008 from japan, hardly wore it as I bought it simply for 1 reason - scarcity. used to be a fan of professional models but as you said that kinda died down when they get so much hype these days. so it's been in the cupboard, untouched. until recent years been experiencing different straps options. I paired it with a black rubber straps and I begin to see the same way as you do. OP is such a perfect, high quality watch that dont scream out rolex, the fact that they are so well built, discrete, now with a rubber strap. it became one of favourite watches and getting way more wrist time than I would have expected. truly a great piece that is near perfection.
I think the black and white are more formal, and wear larger on wrist from the extra lume at hour hands. The 2015 colors are more casual, which is arguably more versatile.
Great review of a stunning watch but as like most people I can't afford one so two years ago I purchased a Seiko SNXS 73 it is 37mm and only $80,have a look it's great watch.
Lovely no nonsense everyday piece. Understated but full of the usual Rolex quality. No date to fiddle about with and break up the dial symmetry. Low profile for slipping under a work shirt cuff. Nice size too. At this price point Rolex are offering a bullet proof entry level under the radar piece which will last a lifetime and retain its value.
Unless you are a pilot, yachtsman, diver, or regularly involved in measuring time (to within a nat's cock!), the OP is by far the most comfortable and practicable Rolex you can own. As for size, don't follow trends, use common sense! If you are of a larger build then a 39mm is probably better than a 36mm. Personally I own a blue 3,6,9 dial 36mm. Very comfortable and very well proportioned which adds to the aesthetics.
Thanks for sharing. I did look at this watch but I was a bit disappointed with the dial as I was expecting a pure white like the polar explorer 2 as oppose to a silvery mat dial. Lovely watch, nevertheless.
Go with the Datejust 41. I bought this last year in white dial, no matte finish. It is very similar to the Oyster Perpetual but with the date complication.
Can’t decide between this and the 38mm blue aqua terra. Both are close to perfection but I think the AT is more interesting with more flair. However, the OP is much more elegant and classic as well as being thinner.
Got it in black about 3 months ago.it's pure class i had a budget of 10 grand UK sterling and this was my pick.suits the free thinker types.if your a statist copy cat type then get the explorer.
I agree with the pictures comment, I thought I liked the blue one, but tried it on... and just didn’t like it but then tried the black and loved it, trying rhodium next
@@joes9545 I don't own an OP 39. I own an explorer and a sub no date. I personally think both watches you've mentioned are very similar. I like the history, sport hands and Arabic numerals on the Explorer. Some would view these aspects as both minor or major differences in my opinion. Both would fly under radar very well, i'd think. I have never had anyone notice either watch. I think they could be confused with a Timex. However, the more sports oriented Exp. can be worn with a NATO strap and would add to the low key, sport look more easily. No lug holes makes getting bracelet off difficult. I keep the bracelet on the Exp. and a NATO strap on the Sub for this reason. The Sub is the heavier watch so it makes wearing it with a NATO more comfortable in my opinion. The OP maybe easier to source? Food for thought.
Shame at the price point Rolex didn't include an easy link extension. Easy link should be a prerequisite on all their Watches, otherwise an excellent watch.
@@WatchHobbyist It's rather strange to design this as an everyday watch but not include an easy link. An easy link would add how much to the price? deal breaker for me.
INDEED!, it IS the WATCH! bar none, par excellence! I do not care who agrees or not, it is the standard all brands aspire but will never achieve! the best 3 hander ever! Gerald Genta was quoted saying he regreted not designing the oyster because it is the most recognizable watch ever....saying all that I completely disagree with the marketing tactics and luxury status that even this little piece has achieved, they were thought as well made, accurate, dependable, simple watches (in all the extent of the word), only that, not the fashion accesory they have become nowadays.
Nice quality watch. £4500 is still not cheap and with no complications I feel this watch appeals to those who want the 'rolex brand' rather than the watch itself. Take the name off and who would pick this in a line up on design only? Not many as its simplicity struggles to differentiate from from a tissot at £450. I am a watch fanatic who prefers watches that have such unique designs and still excellent quality at affordable price tags. Check out some newer brands like NOMOS and Meistersinger who have in house movements but with much more eye catching designs.
I've owned a Rolex Clam for many years... Someone told it's a fake because Rolex didn't make any Clams; only Oysters. The Clam has a cover over the dial that slowly raises at the top of the hour...hence the name... It also vibrates when the tide goes out... Which does me no good because I live in Arizona...
it actually looks bigger than my hulk ... cuz my hulk has this ceramci bezel taking a way a lot of space ... this is just a lot of dial ... i donno if i love it ... or would it be better at a smaller size
Great review, very comprehensive and balanced. I am looking to get this for work and evening occasions. Are you still pleased with it and has it held up well to scratches etc. Thank you
Well, I certainly missed out on this beautiful watch now the market has gone mad (don’t believe the 2022 Rolex price crash hype) waiting list runs into years and RRP £5.5k now or close to £10k mint on grey market
Great review mate, and I believe it was a great move to give a more simplistic dial to the Oyster and that white dial is my pick also.... it more so reminds me of what the newer Air King should have looked like.. more like the old model. A wicked buy IMO.
Good review, however more wrist shots inside and outside lighting conditions would be appreciated particularly to gain perspective with that dial. Thanks.
I might get the 34-36 in blue 369 soon, cant wait.....I have the same size wrist as yours but like the smaller conservative classic look of the smaller ones.
Can anyone tell me if this model will fit an 8.5 inch wrist? Everywhere I look online I get conflicting data on exactly how long the bracelet is from the factory.
Would you recommend the OP39 black dial over a Speedmaster Professional as a one watch collection for a while? Prices are 4600€ and 3300€ respectively.
And mo the extstention link sucks ... it's too long ... u pull it out and put of nowhere you have a whole 5 mm longer... that's half of the cm.. that's idiot ... its either no extension or sub extension with 2mm which makes sense
Darren Upton Honestly I think they are all splendid and have something different to offer. If I have any buyer's remorse, it is if I should have saved for a sub, at grey market prices.
The dial is simplicity at its finest. But the case shape just sabotages the whole timepiece. Rolex needs to dump the maxi case. The bulky lugs ruin the balance of the watch. The lugs on the older 4 and 5 digit Rolexes looked so much more aesthetically appealing and sat on the wrist much nicer. They’re selling so many watches and the hype surrounding the brand is so high that I doubt they’ll do it anytime soon, if at all...
A bit too sterile for me. I'm very happy with 114060 as a do it all simplistic Rolex. Very well executed though but it is very annoying that Rolex gave it the downgraded clasp. It's as if they are forcing the "entry level" status on it.
IMHO, there is better balance and elegance with the OP. The cyclops on the DJ is less appealing to me. Also the oyster links plus cyclops is a dead give away for a rolex should you wish to have less brand recognition. Lastly, the OP has the advantage over the DJ if you own multiple watches, since the former only requires one to just set the time and go.
Love this watch. However, I've seen a review which shows a good amount of marco footage of the hands and oh boy, very very poor finishing for this level of reputation and expectation. I'll be borrowing an in store lupe to inspect when/if I ever get the opportunity to buy at retail.
hi there , hate to tell you but if you review your video where the wrist shot was done, you will find the watch is too big for your wrist. I Feel the 34 will be perfect for you. You are lucky because 1 size down is 36 and the 36 dial is not as nice due to the double markers at 3, 6 and 9. Just a friendly suggestion.
Very differing prices I’ve found for the Oyster 39mm. Online they’re selling for around £5000 when the retail is £4500. Do all Rolex Official Dealers sell this for the retail price of £4500 please?
I have this watch, OP39 White. Do you think it makes any sense to get a Datejust in the future? I'm thinking that the OP39 is a Datejust without the cyclops and jubilee? Am I missing something here? Can they coexist in a collection, or would one overlap the other?
I'm love the OP but I have to tell you . I am looking down at my Seiko sarbo35 . Mine looks better . Is it as nice as a Rolex ? No way. I am not stupid but it was under $500 us.
