I'd have experimented with the mics switched around to give his voice the ribbon and to liven up the guitar using the 2200a

Sounds good: nice performance and recording.

the best way was to let hear the vocal and guitar track separately from each other then we can listen to any crosstalk, I assume that the lower mic has a fig eight direction, if so then I would have arranged it differently compared to the singer

Thanks for the review. There's a noticeable amount of noise floor during the track (you can hear it clearly in the beginning). Is it caused by the interface or mics?!

I'd say that he perhaps pushed the gain quite a lot on the VR2. Even though it's the active (phantom powered) version, I'm assuming the guitar playing was VERY gentle. I'd never use a ribbon mic for such a gentle acoustic guitar playing.

I would have used them the other way around.

Or VR2 on both vocals and guitar. It feels like a little too much contrast here.

Ruben Serhalawan yes, that ribbon would sound nice on his vocals, he has quite a bright voice and the condenser would pickup his finger picking , dark sounding guitar better. It would be interesting to just try it and see what the differences are.

I really like the guitar sound but in this case, I think he has the wrong voice for that mic. Everyone rants about "The Chinese Mic Hi's" I think it is more a modern mic high-frequency thing in that I hear it in modern gear of all manufacture. I have heard that "modern tone" sound really great at times so I am far less inclined to bash stuff. I believe the real issue is that modern gear is so accurate that it does nothing to disguise the stuff that the vintage stuff was actually just incapable of. Mics, preamps and converters. The Audient stuff is transparent like that. Put that mic through a vintage pre (maybe a V76 or similar approximation) and it will be a whole new kettle of fish. In any case, I would probably choose a mic for Joel that subdues the upper mid stuff slightly and embellishes the bottom a bit more. Ya atypical I know but in this case, I might reach for something more U47 like. BTW I tent towards Celin Dion, kinda bright and airy sounding and with that I gravitate more towards C-12 + Elam 251 sounds. For me to look for a darker tone on a vocal is not the norm. Also, the room tone is not my fave. Not sure if that was part of the verb or the actual room reflections. It feels a bit disconnected to me. I was hearing a more intimate and in your face thing.

Caveat. I was thinking M72 and said M76. The 76 would add air where the m72 would add low mid and mid. A more vintage tone. I wish I owned one. on the bucket list. lol.

In case you're curious, I have both of these mics, and have recorded both acoustic and vocals with them in a variety of contexts. Here's one with the voodoo doing double duty (though an ART PRO MPA II tube pre, no EQ, gentle 4:1 comp): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VBcr4LMF3mc.html And here's a video of the 2200 on vocal through the same preamp, with a de-esser, moderate comp, and the whole track bounced to hi-bias cassette and back (skip to 1:00): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fEgSf1QQWC0.html . The 2200 is definitely a "modern" sounding mic, particularly in the hi's, but when paired with a nice dark signal chain can give really great and surprisingly versatile results.

Ya, that was kinda where I was going. The V76 was a little darker sounding pre but does it in a cool way. I should really just buy one. I end up talking about it so much. No-one seems to have one though. Everyone has a 1073. No point in even mentioning it although I feel like in this case even though it is so open in the top it might smooth out the other stuff and just sound even airier which I might like too. lol.

Do you have the VR1 or the VR2. Did you use that in both clips?
@JoshTurnerGuitar
@JoshTurnerGuitar 6 лет назад
I have the VR2. This review video (I believe erroneously) states that the sonic character/frequency response of the VR1 and VR2 are different, when in fact only the output level and (to a marginal degree) noise floor are different because of active circuitry (basically a gain stage) in the VR2. The ribbon design is identical. I only used the VR2 in the first clip - I've yet to do a video with it ONLY on vocals, although it serves admirably in this capacity in the right context. You certainly don't need dark pre's to round it off like (I think) you do for the 2200.

It lacks top end like all the really cheap large diaphragm mics. Why would anyone buy it? Beats me. The 2200 is normal and has been around for ages. We would like to see the EQ curve, how it is taylored assumging you don't record without EQ.
