Introduced in the early 2000's, the Seiko 5 SNK809 Military or "Little Flieger" is an immensely popular and well regarded entry-level automatic watch easily found around $50 which I've been requested to review many times. In the flesh it's a small but study piece with an impeccable vintage field or military style dial and a bold handset. I discuss the pro and cons of the 7S26 movement, how the watch wears, and give my perspective about why this watch is a solid choice as a first automatic watch, especially at around $50-$60.
Model number: SNK809
Crystal: Hardlex
Case material: Stainless steel
Case diameter: 36 millimeters
Case Thickness: 11 millimeters
Band width: 18 millimeters
Calendar: Day and date
Movement: Automatic 7S26
Water resistance: 30 Meters
Kindly give me a tip!

it feels so classy nowadays to look at your wrist watch for time instead of pulling your phone out.

To me it is more trouble to dig out your phone than it is to take a quick look at your wrist. But, I love watches anyway, especially mechanical jeweled movements like this watch..

Thanks for this review, well shot, and informative. I'm 72 years old, and I grew up with watches of a "normal" size, not the monster "Big Bens" we seem to wear nowadays. I've just bought this watch from City Watches, based in Singapore which was delivered very quickly to New Zealand. I did toss up whether to get the slightly bigger, more waterproof model, but I'm really happy with the purchase - it's exactly the same watch as described in this video and I like the smaller size on my wrist, much less obtrusive. It weighs little and the canvas strap is fine, it weighs much less than a metal one and I really like the brushed stainless buckle and strap holders . It runs quite a bit fast, about 30 secs per day, but I'll give it a few weeks to settle, then take to a competent jewellers to adjust if still needed. I like the recessed winder, it's out of the way and less likely to get caught in clothing or other extraneous matter. My other watch is a 9 carat gold bumper automatic Omega with small second hand, it's exactly the same age as I am. But it's not the sort of watch I can wear in everyday activities hence my purchase of this little Seiko.

This is my work watch, I work as a welder. Let that be a testament to its durability. It requires weekly adjustment, but that's okay.

@Easy Cooking Z looses a minute throughout the week. There is an adjustment in the movement to speed the watch up a bit, I don't want to mess with it is all. Just as easy to pull the crown and move it ahead the minute. Hope that answered your question.

This is a phenomenal watch. Mine loses one minute a month. It is a very comfortable watch to wear, especially with the crown at the four o'clock position. It took me a little while to appreciate this watch among the flashier bigger budget autos but it is really very handsome and has a smooth second hand sweep. I wear it on a brown leather one-piece zulu. I am not a pilot, a diver, or a SEAL. I like the simple utilitarian design that isn't cluttered with poser features that I will never ever need like fuel calculators or a rotating bezel. It tells the time, day, and date accurately. And it has a subtle style that continues to grow on me. When I start scuba diving, flying my own fighter jets, and assaulting ISIS strongholds, I may think about getting a new timepiece. But besides it being a great watch, the Sunday day indicator is red, unlike the other days which are white - this is personally special to me since it distinguishes the day of formal congregational worship from the rest of the week. Christian or not, this is a great watch.

I had this watch with me through two tours in Afghanistan and it was 100% reliable. I've been underwater with it repeatedly, it's survived sand, sweat and grime, it just refused to stop working. The band died though but I slapped a Nato replacement on it and carried on.

Fun fact: the watch most used by terrorists is the Casio F91W. Even Osama Bin Laden has been photographed wearing one. You'd think it would be really sophisticated watch but it's just the most basic affordable digital watch. You can still buy one today around $10.

Excellent review - of course. I've been wearing one of these as a daily work "beater"for 8 years. I've never had any mechanical issues with the watch. None. I have replaced the band three times. It keeps excellent time. I compare it monthly to a GPS time code generator and it is always less than a minute off. It's size is not an issue. It is comfortable, low profile, kinda stylish, and it just works. Buy one!

For Christmas, I ordered myself this watch. I told my brother about it and in his response, "you should be getting a citizen pro diver in the mail soon -____-." I'm not a watch collector or anything but I thought it would be a neat thing to start wearing a wrist watch again. I cancelled my order, have been wearing the citizen since but I will eventually get one of these. I really like the looks of this one. thanks for the awesome vids!

I have had the cream dial version for 10+ years. It's my first mechanical automatic watch. It is amazingly accurate, I consistently observe less than ~2 min error over a month. Only sent to servicing once. As the reviewer said, this dial surface is very well designed and it became my favorite daily watch. For the price, it can't be beat.

I've had this watch for about a month. It looks great, feels great. I definitely like the military look and it keeps very good time. I enjoy an automated movement. This has 21 jewels, which is the average number of jewels you would find in the old railroad pocketwatches. And finally the price. You would never think you could own a Seiko watch at such a low price.

I just searched around on eBay for a few weeks until I found one that I liked. If i remember correctly I paid around $15 for it. If you are gonna get one from eBay though, be careful not to get an ultra cheap, crappy Chinese strap. The one i found was made in Germany and it is really great leather.

I've been wearing this watch for 3 years. It's simplicity and design is what drew me to it. I would definitely change the strap to a leather one to increase it's "classiness" for casual and formal wear.

I bought my first automatic only a month ago and yep, it was a SNK809 and I absolutely love it. The supplied strap really is terrible and I immediately swapped it to a NATO and I really love how the watch can be made to look so different with a strap change. I have tiny oriental wrists and the 37mm diameter suits me really well. I've also since bought another Seiko 5, but this one is a SNK615K1 and I love it nearly as much as the 809 and it's quite a lot dressier. I'm now thinking of buying an Orient Blue Ray II (I can see this hobby becoming quite expensive!).

Got mine on Amazon on Prime Day (the beige one). Only $30! I do have to say though, the first one I got was DOA. Had to send it back and got a free replacement that it working perfectly. Really recommend it. I also have to point out that the lume is not that great. It gets dull in about two minutes, and in about 5-10 is almost impossible to see. My quartz Bulova also doesn't have long lasting lume, however is almost always visible even when it's the lume is out of charge. Otherwise, it's great! The size really gives it a vintage vibe, especially being able to fit almost entirely on the dial (yes, just the dial) of my Bulova. Now the Bulova feels a little big! But both are super comfortable and you'll get used to both of them.

Have had mine for just under two weeks, and I can already attest to its sturdiness. Took a hard fall off my bike and wound up landing on the watch. My wrist wound up fairing worse than the watch. The movement is still functioning despite the serious asphalt damage inflicted on the crystal and body.

I just purchased this watch today in the blond version. I live in the desert and it's a great desert watch and goes with my accessories. I love men's watches because they are bigger (I can actually see the hands) and have cool features. I am athletically oriented so it works. This was an early birthday present to myself I got a great deal on it on amazon. I love these kinds of watch bands because they don't irritate my wrist.

For the most part, the snk809 is a "B" dial aviation watch. This style was used by an observer in bombing runs. This is why the minutes are more pronounced than the hours. I will be buying one of these.

I have this watch! I was concerned when I purchased it that it would look feminine on my large wrists but it doesn't even in the slightest. Its honestly one of the most beautiful well crafted watches I have ever seen and the small size actually makes it very comfortable and light on the wrist you will almost forget it's there. The only downsides are that it will frequently need to be reset after a day of not whereing and the included strap is garbage! I recommend a nice leather strap also I think the green and blue models of this watch look the best. Nice review!

I absolutely adore mine. I got it because I do frequent long distance motorcycle trips and I wanted something robust that disappears on the wrist when riding; this does. For reference my daily is a Glashutte Original Senator Karree moonphase, which is about as serious as a watch gets (so I definitely consider myself an enthusiast).

Great review! I have the 809 in the field green dial. Like so many others, this was my first automatic watch, and it got me hooked! I have had this watch for about seven years now, I have never had it serviced, and it is still keeping great time! It has become my go to weekend watch. Definitely nothing fancy here, but rock solid! It's funny about the strap. The first thing I did was to put a new khaki Nato strap on it, and now there are no downsides to it. The fact that it does not hack or wind has never bothered me. The 7s26 movement is a no-nonsense workhorse that starts right up after a few shakes and away you go! Thanks for the fabulous review, and keep it up! Love all your gear reviews, but your watch reviews are my favourites! You ever think about doing a Shinola Runwell Chrono review? Would love to know your thoughts on that one. It's the newest addition to my collection, and while it is (gasp) a quartz watch, I am simply addicted to the way it looks and feels on my wrist. I understand Shinola has an automatic in the pipeline. Stay tuned!

Majority of the Seiko watches with exception to the Pressage, SARB and Grand Seiko line are made in Malaysia. Not sure how much it costs in other parts of the world but here in Malaysia, this model goes for around RM210 which translates to $47 or so. A ridiculous price for a watch with such a rich history and a robust movement which will continue running long after you’re dead. For beginners venturing into automatic watch territory, I strongly recommend getting this watch simply because you don’t have to baby it and it’s a fun timepiece

Seiko 5 SNK807 yay! It's my everyday wear. I ditched the original band, and replaced it with a nice blue silicone band with white stitching along the edges. Because the watch is non hacking, it runs 10 sec ahead of my local atomic clock. After a week in checking the + or -, it still runs 10 sec ahead of the atomic clock. No joke. A very reliable and accurate piece of engineering...at a good price.

I really love this watch, It's not for "watch-guys" Its for utilitarians. I love that its small and thin and the crown is offset and recessed. Easy to wear with gloves, take on and off jackets and generally not inhibit movement as much as a big clunker "showoff" watch. That said, I've had some trouble with the rotor loosening (see my vid) and eventually coming apart, so I'd love to pay twice as much for this EXACT watch but with a more durable movement. I do abuse it though, worn everyday, everywhere. Work, cycling, shower, shop, snow, welding, all of it.

Great review! Studying the history of the Seiko 5 line (or any if them) is fascinating. It's been around for 50 years. Thanks for bringing up the references to the Fliegers; I totally missed that when I got mine! The Fliegers by Stowa were some of my initial interest in watches. But I I love my Seiko5 snk809. The display back clinched the deal. I have the light colored one and have a red and blue striped NATO band on it. A solid color works better, I think. I'll probably get a leather NATO strap. One place this watch doesn't like to be is on my wrist at the gun range! But it's only $50 and wasn't made to take a beating. On mine the crystal is flat and seems a little more reflective than the one in your review. I also found out I prefer the number rings with the hours on the outside, rather than the inside. Thanks for the review!

@555 Based upon your review, I ordered an SNK809 from a family-owned jeweler. I paid a bit more for it than many here have stated they paid. But, I had the enjoyable experience of the jeweler contacting me personally to advise me my watch had arrived. I also enjoyed the experience of having the watch unboxed and presented to me by the jeweler. The jeweler had pre-set day/date and time and had pre-wound the watch. It was a wonderful experience. We now have a relationship. There is an illness in this country and that illness believes it should buy product at cost or less. That failure in thinking stymies development and cheapens the industry. Once all the "brick-and-mortar" establishments have shuttered their doors, where shall we go for the touch, feel, and see experience? To the individual who paid $30 and received a DOA unit, you got what you deserved. Stuff costs money! Please do the rest of us a favor, and ante up to the reasonable value of the product. I, for one, enjoy the brick and mortar experience as opposed to some donkey pulling a part number off the shelf and then the customer waits for the "brown truck" to arrive.
@student908065
@student908065 7 лет назад
Can you shill harder? The reason nobody goes to brick and mortar anymore is because the prices are shit and the service is shit. The reasonable value of any item is the cheapest price you can find. You have to be an imbecile to pay more than 70 dollars for a Seiko 5 of this level.

Crown and Buckle has an excellent selection of 18mm NATO and other straps. The navy and the grey are both very nice with the watch, as well as the basic black. Great review; I've been looking forward to this one.

I agree, It is the best bang for buck automatic watch at an unbelievable price. I switch between this and my SKX as my daily watch more often than my Swiss ones to be honest. So versatile and robust.

Great review. Thank you. Re watch size, I think smaller is actually better for a military watch. I say this only because I trek and camp. When you first start buying kit, bigger is better. Then as you get more experienced you are always trying to cut down on weight, size, profile, and form. My favourite knife is a kukri, but there are reasons why experienced bushcrafters go for small, high quality, scandi knives. When you have to walk do lots of work and travel long distances, you take the least amount of what you need to do the job. Great review. I will get one.

It's a good watch for the price.I have had it for about 3 years and am quite satisfied. Got tired of the fabric strap so put a leather strap on it to make it look less casual.

Yes, I replaced the strap with a $6 black rubber strap. And it is now very light and comfortable to wear.

I don't know why so many reviewers suggest this as the "first automatic watch". There's no such thing. What would the "last automatic watch" then be? It doesn't make sense. A watch was not made with the thought in mind to be a "first" automatic watch to someone. If you like the design and features of a watch you go ahead and buy it. Not everyone has/wants to spend hundreds of dollars on a wristwatch.

good clear review and very informative. My first automatic is an Orient Mako that cost £85. Amazing versatile watch for this price . Great quality, and style with the bonus of terrific accuracy. This Seiko may well be my second automatic after watching this review but I don't think it would be my favourite of the two.

I paid 49.95 from a USA seller. You can't beat it for the price. It's accurate for an Automatic at 5 seconds fast a day. Build quality is fine. Hopefully it's reliable.

My first automatic watch was a Swatch sistem5, very nice watch with a 60 hour power reserve. Unfortunately, someone stoled it from my bag during PE :3 I'm thinking on getting back to automatic watches so I think this watch would be perfect.

You need to look up the B-Uhr Type B used during WWII by German bomber navigators. The dial and hands on this Seiko are a very direct homage to that specific aviation navigation chronometer. The lume, however, isn't, as they lumed everything seen in white on the dial except the inner circle.

Thank you for such an informative review. I've been on the fence about getting one as my daily work watch, but now I'm definitely going for it. I was first introduced to its bigger sibling, the SNZG15J1, which I thought was a great watch. Then I found your review and now I believe the SNK809 to be a better alternative for a smaller-wristed person like myself. Thanks again!

"Find a watch that appeals to you visually and is at a price range that is easily accessible to you". And is actually available to buy. Still looking for that SNKK35 you've reviewed back then. I guess I should look for the SNKE63 before it disappears as well, since it still seems available in few places. Although I think I prefer full 12 arabics dial than just 6/9/12...

Thanks so much for this review. I have wanted to get a mechanical watch on budget and was about just get the plasticy Swatch System 51.. for $120 But I guess this one appeals to me more coz my dad owned Seiko 5s and I loved them. I didn't know Seiko had one affordable.

I have an olive green Seiko 5, and after never loving the fabric band I bought a "Hirsch 109002-10-18 18 -mm Genuine Calfskin Watch Strap." If you look at the customer images on Amazon, they are both on Seiko 5s (one is mine). On the one hand, a $40 strap for a $60 watch is a bit silly. On the other hand, blowing through cheaper straps before finally realizing you should have bought the $40 one is sillier.

A nice, comfortable band or strap can make or break any watch no matter the price.. Most people have at least a few watches so a nicer band or strap can be passed around for differing looks at will. Having a ton of differing NATO's as well as a few colours of leather can make just two watches have a myriad of possibilities for wear.

It's sure a great looking watch. Too bad about having no hacking feature, though. That makes it unusable as a military watch, despite the name, since in this line of work it's important to synchronize our watches down to the second. Still, it's gorgeous and I might consider getting one for casual wear.
