I didn't mention the price in the video, because it will varies quite a bit depending upon the country and when people see this video. It's in the video description though.

Initially, I began watching your educational vids to learn more about these so-called action cams, micro-cams, etc, but now I look forward to your vids more as Tourist videos....e.g. National Geo.....I have the feeling I have visited Manchester and surroundings many times now.....thanks!!!! And, frankly, the area looks a lot nicer than the press describes your area......looks clean and not polluted....people don't look that friendly....and all the video in the world can't change that!! ha!!!

If you add a Barska Accu Grip to the AKA-LU1, you now have a hand grip that you can use to handle the camera making it pretty much a 1 handed use. Thanks for the good review

I am a skateboarder and purchased this because it has a screen that rotates because as a filmer you'll have to film the shots in a low angle and most of the time you can't see what your filming, thanks for this review it helped me with deciding to buy it or not!

No you are completely correct. It's virtually impossible to use the mic socket. Of course there are mods you can do to cases and removing the flap off the bottom of the camera, but if you use the unaltered official equipment then as far as I can tell none of them allow access the mic socket.

At least they made the bottom of the case more square so that the camera will now stand up on its own. Nice review :o)

Price depends on where you live. Do a google shopping search and you'll get the answers. The max memory will probably be 32GB which is the largest affordable size anyway.

Thanks for the review, great stuff! I'm a bit puzzled. Sony had the perfect opportunity to fix the problem of the awkwardly placed external microphone input with this housing - and they didn't. Quite disappointing.

I think the most common subject here is the best CAR DVR CAM. And I have a challenge for you, how about a motorcycle DVR CAM? As a rider, I am looking for a small product with good quality for front and rear view. Also, you're doing a great job, I like your reviews and I must say that you touch all the details which makes it very fun and interesting to watch. :-)

Thanks for the video. I became aware of this item this week and because Sony make several cameras the same as this but with different model numbers, I checked with Sony support to see if my AS30V was compatible. They replied that it wasn't. However on the Sony web page for this item it states that it is!! After seeing this video I could see that my camera is identical.. I've found the camera takes great pictures and this mount & screen will make a very useful accessory. PS Don't buy the remote viewer/screen which fits like a wristwatch if you want to film in the alps as the screen is invisible in bright light.

Multiplying pixels to artificially increase specs would only apply to sensors, not screens. The resolution on this screen is accurate to the specs quoted.

hi, thanks great videos, just wondering i have a sony fdr 1000 action cam, and i would really like fit a screen similar to the one reviewed, have you any suggestions, im fairly handy with building things, if one is not available, would you think a small wifi receiver screen, or to use the traditional AV video out socket to a little AV in, screen, and build a holder bracket of sorts, why sony dont have a camcorder body for the fdr1000 is crazy, regards keith

The screen is just an AV output, try to change the TV out settings if there is any to include the HUD.

can you film without the wide angle? so it doesnt have the fisheye effect. if you turn off steady shot wouldnt it fix that?

Great review! I'm SOOOOOO close to buying the Sony Action, so this might be the last small push... That small simple casing is a very useful extra, but your points on back-draws should be addressed by Sony... not having the option to connect external mic is a bad omission from Sony's side unfortunately.

I picked one these up in an electronics exch. store for E20. (in perfect nick) The guy wasn't sure if t'would fit my AS15 (& neither was I ?) but finding your video was a bonus as this was really helpful and informative -and it fitted the cam like a glove! I love the tripod mount and the LCD screen.. but sad 'bout the blocked mic socket and NO on-screen info :( but me thinks I done well for E20 :) (5\10)

The fisheye is the FOV caused by the convex glass lens......so no.

I am getting the navman 358 instead now as its on special at a local store. Maybe I should try and do a review :) By the way I have a chinese DVR that stuffed up on me. I decided that I don't need the GPS sensor thing that the 388 has and all the online stores don't have stock. It records in 1080p and I am more confident in a navman product than those chinese DVR's. I've been through 3 Chinese DVR's the first one stopped working after 2 months but was only 720p so not really good enough

The screen goes off if it closed, although battery life is 2.5 hrs with it on anyway.

the objective of this case is for good framing, i suggest you dump the idea and shoot in 1080p mode and edit the video in 720p mode this gives you about 20% of image play to adjust the frame when resizing the image, not for mum on holiday but for someone femiliar with editing it works.

I also forgot to mention that by the time I buy all the accessories I could probably buy a professional grade camcorder with alot more features. The accessories may seem like they dont cost alot but it adds up quickly.

I think you have some real influential clout in the tech marketplace online and a lot of followers (including myself) make their purchasing decision based on your reviews. I did buy the AS 15 unit just for some discrete street shots. (I think Sony should also recognize this influence.) Have you thought of getting hold of the UK rep for Sony to discuss these short comings of their Action Cam system for some future hardware upgrades ? Cheers!

Having that tripod thread on it would mean I could use it instead of the water proof case on my helmet but then it's exposed to the elements and with the tripod thread being so far back, it might start pulling down on the front of my helmet, also it would probably increase wind noise.

barrel distortion (what you call "fish-eye effect") is not exclusive to fish-eye or even wide angle lenses, although it usually gets more apparent at these short focal lengths, a well designed lens will greatly reduce this type of distortion, something these cheap camcorder lack

Yep, that omission of the mic plug is huge, as is the lack of access in many modes. Again, I am astounded by the lack of vetting in the design process. Don't these designers live in the real world? Maybe companies should start searching for the genius, or really just common sense, that exists in the world, instead of trusting things to in house old boys networks? Design should be a contest, not a privilege. Great review as usual, did you mention the price?

I was really looking forward to this attachment but its very basic and the lack of a usb pass through will prevent me from purchasing this. I excepted at least that the LCD screen would have a OSD and menu navigation, disappointing. Maybe Sony can address these short coming with a firmware update

No, its not a waterproof case, it's just a plastic cage with an LCD screen.

Actually what you are calling Barrel Distortion is a purposeful fish eye effect. The lens on these type of action cameras (GoPros, Drift HD, Sony Action Cam) capture more than a 90 degree field of view allowing them to capture more of the action. Usually this is around 135 or 170 degrees FOV (Field of View).

speaking as a mechanical engineer, I have to take a small amount of tongue-in-cheek issue with your judgement of a mechanism being "unsophiscated" purely because it is mechanical. I prefer descriptions such as "simple", "elegant", energy-efficient" :P Just teasing of course, and this was uploaded 5 years ago so there's no reason for you to ever seen this comment. I'm confident enough in Navman products plus its on special today. Have owned two Navman GPS. Btw if you'd be kind enough to check out my latest video messed up DVR so you can give me a clue what's wrong with the bloody thing I'd be grateful. Will post a test video on my channel . It records in 1080p. You might consider getting the Navman 388 instead which has the built in GPS etc. I've decided I don't need the built in GPS. Also Navman have another 720p DVR camera you might want to check out.
