This is a rather sinister book, that is to say the suggestion is that something very untoward is going on on every level, in every situation. I feel however that it would be more succesful told within a wider context, wherein the events could be framed and thereby somewhat revealed or explained (though not explicitly). In this context, this narrow, confined space it feels too opaque, too stifled by its own secretiveness. It's an interesting experiment that falls prey to too little attention to detail and yet far too much of it.
Yup, I know that makes no sense. Read this book, and you will get what I mean. It is worth reading, if only to be reassured that even literary stars like Mieville can trip up.
