Review & Use of Cabot's New Timber Prep & Deck Clean (Merbau Tannin Treatment)

Merbau is a great decking and outdoor wood to use. It's cheap and durable but very resinous, which can leech out and ruin your finish or the ground beneath it. In this "Quick Fix" I review and show you how to use the Cabot's range of products to treat and prepare the wood quickly to help stop this.
As usual, it will be my first time using these products so you should get a good perspective of what to expect from a new user and see if they will be value for money for you.

Here is the project video that I got the Cabot's for - a sliding Deck / Dog Gate. I also restored the adjecent privacy screen at the same time. Looked great. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u3Mm4XZPHg4.html

What a bloody awesome review mate, people need to see how things work such as these, Merbau bleeds heaps 😱🤔 & I built some bench seats & sprayed em down with water a few times & went straight for a outdoor finish that worked out pretty good as well. Great video mate 🍻👍🇦🇺

That's probably cheaper too! Should do a side by side test to see what the difference is. As with most things, I think you are really paying to save time rather than get a better result.

For brand new timber would the prep be ok to use on its own rather than using the clean as well? Great video, much appreciated 👍

So the prep is really just for leaching the tannins. Merbau in particular is very, eeerr, colourful. You could probably just hose it off, but the soap in the deck clean helps wash off those colourful oils you've just pulled to the surface

Love this review . I have never used that wood before . Over here most is done with jarrah . I have had some issues with some marine spar varnish coming off very old jarrah planks . I wonder if i had done this before if it would have helped .
@FixitFingers

Yep definitely. Jarrah is also very resinous so would probably benefit from this, would be a good experiment. You can get Merbau posts from Bunnings that would cheap to try turning with, it's a bit brittle, not sure how it would go.

Says keep away from painted surfaces and metal but I have painted weather board and metal deck screws haha.

Ha! Yeah I think the cleaner is a little high on the pH scale but as long as it is washed off I'm sure it's fine ;)

@@FixitFingers sweet thanks for the video came in handy. Now I’m worried about it running down into the lawn ha!

@@koruki hahahaha, yeah I don't think the grass will like it very much but eh... it grows back :P

@@FixitFingers should have done it to kill off the lawn before reseed, now new seeds just shooting up. Oh well hope most of the run off soaks down into the cracks over the pavers instead.

Is this a paid review ? you can achieve the same results with a $5 tub of napisan and mix 500 grams to 10 L of warm water to pull the tannin from new timbers. I restore decks for a living we are based in Victoria.

Haha no mate, I think I had fewer than 100 Subs when I filmed this, a long long way off anyone wanting me to try their stuff. I'm just an enthusiastic novice 😅 Spent my own money, got great results, wanted to share. It's a good product that does what's on the label.

@@FixitFingers nice work on the video production mate, Unfortunately, this company has sold out to international giants last year. Lots of quality Aussie products on the market.

@@Deckrejuvenationcom definitely want to try the napisan trick, while the results were great, the deck clean product is certainly not cheap. My first time trying so went with a safe commercial option. Sad to hear Cabots have sold out, I'll have to research some Aussie suppliers next time I try using merbau 👍

Did it prevent future water or rain from producing more tannins?
@FixitFingers

Certainly did. About 18 months on now and no stains under the gate 👌

Cabot's is shit goes flaky
@FixitFingers
@FixitFingers Год назад
Which product did you use Rhys? This stuff is the timber prep, not a finish. Personally I've not had any issue with the Aqua-Deck product, and I've tried a few of their other polys and stain-and-varnishs, all have worked well. No outdoor finish lasts forever, but aqua-deck it should hold up a year or two at least depending on exposure.

Goes flaky after two years then have to sand hole deck again not good for customers who just want to recoat themselves oil best I think
