We review the new Lewden Palazzoli XCEE range of industrial plug and socket range. Learn about the unique product design features including a unique rotary isolator. The XCEE range is designed long life in extreme environments including hot hose down applications to IP69.
Used across the world but with a multitude of names, IEC 60309 plugs and sockets are the workhorse connectors of industry. We find out the secrets of the new Lewden Palazolli XCEE range. See how they are made and why not all plugs and sockets are created equal.
Officially they are IEC 60309-2 1999 "plugs, socket-outlets and couplers for industrial purposes" - but in real life, you may know them by the manufacturer trade name - Commando sockets are the most common term in the UK from the range manufactured by MK. Mennekes, Marechal, Bals and Ceeform are also common manufacturer terms. Some people call them by the current rating e.g 16A plug, 32A plug - but they do go up to a massive 800 amps.
Or you may relate them to the application - caravan plug (blue 230V 16a) building site plug (yellow 110V)

What a brilliantly well made plug and socket! Just a shame that they decided to make the body blue as it is quite confusing for the 110v and 415v variations

yeah, that also shocked me o.O 200-250 V BLUE 100-130 V YELLOW 300-480 V RED but these are all stupidly blue (with some red touches here and there)

I have used the ones from PCE for the last 15 years or so without any problems. PCE was the first company using the compression cable gland strain relief or however you want to call it. Better than the ones you had to cut to size and they save assembly time. Nowadays everybody seems to have them but the PCE CEEs are also available under the ABL-Sursum, Kopp and Sirox-brands. And on a personal note I would like to see all brass contact-CEEs banned and only allow nickel plated contacts. The problems I have had in the past with CEEs were all related to the brass contacts.

At 4:01 these plugs are from PCE (Austrian PC Electric), that will happily supply them with nickel plating on the connecting surfaces. Add a "v" to the end of the basic model number for nickel plated variants. Shown plug are likely to be PCE 013-6TTx (screw-less) or 013-6x (screws that works with ferrules) and connector PCE 213-6TTx (or 213-6x) for the black housing for uses on stage where they may not be completely hidden out of sight but remain unseen for an unsuspecting audience. (the x at the end equals the black "Midnight series" when it is best they go unnoticed by the audience) In regular colours where the housing matches voltage rating, the model numbers are for the plug 013-6TT (or 013-6) and connector 213-6TT (or 213-6). PCE has more expensive variants and Lewden Palazzoli have cheaper variants. The cheapest may not be the best compromise, so it is good to know you options :-)

interesting... how can an item have 3 IP ratings, surely its the highest value. I've never heard of this before.

Ressy6 - The tests for the various IP ratings are very different. So a product could pass an IP68 test and fail an IP66 test. Check out this article - www.efixx.co.uk/Articles/know-how-IP-ratings
