How Good is a Phone Thermal Camera?

How good is a plug in phone thermal camera? In this video I test out the new Topdon TS001 thermal camera. I look for animals and rodents in the dark, leak spots on my air conditioners, and power outlets that are surprisingly warm even though the plugged in device is off. And if you are concerned about my hand, don't worry. No hands were harmed in the making of this video. The burner was hot but only hot enough to leave a mark on my hand without melting off my skin.
Here is the thermal camera used in this video:

I want read a woman's account of being at a theme park and one of the things you could do was have your picture taken with a thermal camera, just for the curiosity of it. Read indicated the warmest spots in the body, of course. Well, one of her breasts showed up as a red spot. It bothered her, thank goodness. So when she got home, she took the image to her doctor, who sent her for a mammogram and other tests. She had breast cancer. It was detected much earlier due to that thermal image, than it would have been otherwise. Very fortunate that she recognized that her image was unusual. Her story still gives me chills.

WOW! Amazing! I am so glad she caught it extra early!!! I never would have even thought a thermal camera would have picked up a cancer in breast tissue. So Amazing! And How lucky she is!

I would never suggest that a thermal camera be used as a diagnostic tool by lay people. However, since I read her story, I can't help but want a thermal camera . I had thoughts about running around taking pictures of all my friends, and asking someone to take a picture of me. And then of course there are my cats. I would give all the people their pictures , as a matter of interest and fun. And if there were red areas where you wouldn't think there would be red areas, I would suggest they take them to their appropriate physician for an opinion. I would of course remind all my female friends of the importance of mammography. At the time, the most popular and highest rated brand of thermal camera that was in reach of the masses was FLIR (pr. Fleer). I still want one.

The frequent lag is shutter calibration. Most cameras have a mechanical shutter used to remove grains. I work on developing thermal cameras.

@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 3 месяца назад
Yeah! The mice were the most interesting to track. You can't really see it in the video but the animals will often leave tracks on the floor too which the thermal camera faintly picks up. You can kind of see that with the cat in the end of the video.

Can it be used for ghost hunting?👻 Neat, but I think I'd prefer the hand held device. Specifically designed for the purpose rather than as a phone accessory and less expensive. Love your stuff!
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 3 месяца назад
That's an interesting idea. It makes me wonder if it's possible but personally I did not see any. 😅 I agree with your conclusion! After using this phone camera I think I would rather use a standalone thermal camera too.
@michelleelle4622
@michelleelle4622 2 месяца назад
I would think any good thermal camera could be used for ghost hunting. The RU-vidrs that I watch have used all kinds of thermal gear, even an app on their phone. I’ve seen someone use something like this being used as well. Of course, they also have the dedicated hand held and/or tripod type as well. FLIR seems to be the most used but also very expensive

Bonus points to the support team at Topdon on this one. I was filming stuff on and off for about 2 weeks and sent them an email early on that it's impossible to change the temp from C to F. In one week there was an update to the app and now it's possible to change it to Fahrenheit.

its hard to see them an night because theyre in the trees behind leaves and branches, thermal cant see through things
@BlackOpsJuJu
@BlackOpsJuJu 3 месяца назад
It is not a glitch or the phones fault when it freezes for a few seconds the reason it does that is it has different temp settings as long as what the camera is seeing is close to the same temp or within the range it will not switch settings but if looking at something hot then something colder it will seem to glitch but is switching ranges Some thermal cameras are faster at doing it and not as noticeable but it is a normal thing

Please let me know where you got that clip that holds the IR camera on your phone. I just got this camera and was really disappointed I had to remove the phone case to plug in the IR camera.
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 24 дня назад
Yeah, you can't plug it in directly if you have a phone case on. The clip you see me using in the video actually came in the box with the camera. I assumed they all come with the phone mount clip?
@J.Rambo1022
@J.Rambo1022 23 дня назад
I guess not haha. I just found it separately on the Topdon website. Only problem I can see is you won't be able to fit the camera back in the zipper case anymore. I also just found you can buy like a 1 inch USB-C extender plug.

If I set my clothes washer to hot water, will I be able to watch the path of it pumping out through the wall? I have a restriction somewhere, and would like to identify where it is.
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 3 месяца назад
Probably not. A thermal camera could show you what part of the wall is hot but it cant see through the wall.
@GWKen
@GWKen 3 месяца назад
Thanks
@cnrom
@cnrom 2 месяца назад
I'm not an expert on this but if you look closely you should see the free part of the path getting heated faster and having a slightly higher temperature than the part after the restriction since there's more mass of hot water before the restriction (hence more thermal energy to be convected to the wall) and less mass after that (pipe is not filled to it's full capacity). At some point the temperature on the whole pipe path will be even but until then, and esp. at the beginning, i think you should be able to see it.

Seems to me a bit expensive, for a camera that has to be used with your phone. There are a lot of thermal imagers, much less expensive, that are standalone units!
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 3 месяца назад
I agree. I also think that a standalone unit is a better option. 👍
@michelleelle4622
@michelleelle4622 2 месяца назад
Could you offer any opinions as to what you think would be better / less expensive? I do not need one of these, however, I have always wanted a thermal camera because I’m just weirdly curious 😂 The FLIR is way too expensive for what I would use it for. I never checked to see how much this product was. Thanks in advance

@@michelleelle4622 non contact thermometer is just fine. 10 bucks or so
@cnrom
@cnrom 2 месяца назад
I'm afraid not. For equally specced sensors the USB phone unit is just the sensor and the rest of the work is done by the phone through the app, while the standalone unit is the same sensor PLUS a micro-computer with CPU, RAM & GPU, a TFT display, a housing with all the bits and bobs (keyboard, inputs, outputs, charging ports, SD slots etc) and a battery to power all these. So no, the standalone unit is always significantly more expensive as long as you compare units with sensors of the same level (with resolution being the most prominent factor).
@cnrom
@cnrom 2 месяца назад
@@michelleelle4622 Unfortunately, cheaper almost always means less resolution, i think some of the cheaper ones go with like 60x60 (pixels that is) which i don't find them useful for pretty much anything. You could probably find something like 120x90 for 130-180Euros which, for me, is the least resolution for decent imaging for close distance. But that's just me :-)
