If yall want me to continue these reviews for the last of us show lemme know in the comments. This review ended being longer than I expected, but since this was the first episode I kinda had a lot to speak on and breakdown 😅What was your opinion on the first episode??
Yes. and I personally think the show isn’t half bad they actually did really good tuning it towards the game and also putting in a lot of filler scenes.
The only thing I wasn't sure about was how the trailer looked super vibrant, and bright. It almost made everything look too clean and sterile. I worried it would make the scenery look like an obvious movie set, but it didn't bother me when I saw the episode.
The only shot that impressed me in the trailers was the collapsed buildings silhouetted in the clap of thunder Everything else looked like they shot outside somebody's back yard. Or a walking dead set. And my feelings didnt change while watching. Just a show. That said, I didnt have strong feelings for the first game either. Still dont.
In the podcast they explained that scene and Craig said that Joel wasn't being protective but he had a PTSD moment that unraged him. It didn't come off as him trying to protect Ellie for me but the PTSD thing makes a lot of sense being they show a flash back of him and sarah before he killed dude
yea I saw that. The whole thing with PTSD is valid but because a lot of the dialogue amongst Joel/Tess & Ellie was cut in that scene it made the overall scene feel rushed and incomplete. I disagree with that when that is such a pivotal moment in the story
@@TheGamer2323 tbf Joel is looking for Tommy so you could argue he's only doing this mission so he can find Tommy, so he chooses his brother over what is essentially a customer. The Ellie infected reveal was incredibly rushed though
I didn't view Joel beating the goofy outta that soldier as him already viewing Ellie as his daughter but everything came to a head. Sarah's death, the 20 years of hell, that solider who he was helping in some way immediately turned on him, I get why he went off like that. The bite reveal on Ellie was a little quick but that location wasn't the best spot for a chat about it. I'm hoping episode 2 Ellie, Joel and Tess will find a quiet spot to talk/yell about it. LOVED episode 1 and am so excited for the rest of the series. To anyone who said over the years "YO WE NEED A LAST OF US MOVIE!" shut your ass up, THIS is what we needed. Well and the games as well, which are like their own cinematic event. Also yes to weekly reviews Gamer!
yea they said in the behind the scenes it was Joel experiencing ptsd from what happened to sarah. But thats how I took it at the time of me watching the show live. Them also cutting out a lot of dialogue from Joel, Tess, and Ellie in that scene and how that quickly just run off after that makes the scene just feel really rushed though
@@TheGamer2323 I can see that. I'm hoping Episode 2 will begin with Joel and Tess speaking to Ellie about it once they reach a quiet spot. With Druckmann on board that's too big a plot point for him to leave out.
Joel is protecting Ellie because he needs to deliver her to get the vehicle and supplies to go look for his brother. It has nothing to do with him caring about her on a personal level. He beat the soldier to death because the situation triggered his feeling regarding his daughter's death. Like a violent inducing PTSD. They established that he still has nightmares about that night every time he sleeps.
Exactly protecting her is part of the job, I don't know why gamer just thinks that means he already cares for her, as his daughter. Obviously that will happen later, right now if she dies, no truck and not finding his bother
I had a great time watching the show with you and the Twitch chat. It was nothing but good times even thru the buffering. Chat is hilarious and I'm grateful to be a part of such a great community. Trolls aside, we're all here to have a good time and appreciate art wether it be thru video games or shows. Love u all
Not sure if anyone has already said this or you've heard it or not but the tendrils or whatever they're called that's replacing spores was actually a cut idea from part 1. There was some audio files I seen on twitter from part 1 that are of Joel and ellie talking about tendrils and there's some concept art for them in thr art book or something. So it's kinda cool they're not just coming up with new shit 100% they're kinda digging into what theyhave done in the past but changed their mind on but bringing it to light
Honestly I saw that scene of Joel beating the soldier to death as PTSD. Not so much about Ellie but it brought him to a place he hasn't resolved within himself yet as the soldier who killed his daughter is already dead. Revenge is therapeutic, but once you've had it...you're left empty(this is what The Last of Us II was trying to say. Even Max Payne 2 touched on it). Joel never even got to "taste" revenge as Tommy popped the soldier who killed his daughter. So he's been left with this lingering, unresolved rage for 20 years and it exploded in that scene. So it was more a moment of him snapping and letting it out than anything to do with Ellie. I think they did that to show how unhinged and dangerous Joel is in this show(as even Ellie looked freaked out).
they even confirmed I believe it's ptsd in the behind the scenes. Though valid, I thought because so much dialogue was cut in that scene it made the entire scene feel rushed and not as impactful
I love that this dude is still the same goofy guy he was when he started this channel. Props and thanks for being yourself and never changing up bro much respect! Been watching you for years! Like I grew up with you and shit crazy!
In each episode, they should show 5 to 10 minutes of flashback of what was going on during the 20 year time skip. That would’ve been interesting.. and with the show being 90 minutes almost per episode the flashbacks won’t take away from the show.
My only complaint about the show was the ending when they figure out Ellie is infected. The scene felt rushed. Maybe they'll talk about it more in the next episode
I thought the episode was amazing. I really like where they are going with this so far. I also agree with what you said about the scene where Joel punches the soldier to death. I thought he was caring a little too much for Ellie too early
I think it was more like a PTSD moment but because they cut out alot of the dialogue in that scene that the game had, the overall scene felt kinda rushed
I agree with everything you said apart from the joel freaking out at the end bit. I don't think he was protecting ellie in a fatherly way at all, I think he was just doing his job of transporting the "cargo" that marlene was so desperate for him to protect. Him freaking out was almost entirely just the PTSD he was feeling at that moment to where a soldier is pointing a gun at him while he's trying to protect a child, where he knows he could easily fail again if he doesn't act.
Most your community cap when it come to TLOU support! 🧢😂 I was jumping around like a kid on Christmas 😂😂 keep the reviews of the episodes coming I have the same gripe with that Joel anime rage protective scene, it’s too early for that, the bond is slowly grown over the whole game! It was super rushed here!
it just reminded him of his daughter and how he was put in that situation again, i dont think it was all for ellie, i mean yes he has to protect her, but in that moment he was getting flash backs, that moments haunts him
the scene with joel going ballistic i think had to do more with Sarah. and i think its just the whole thing that Joel and Ellie's relationship is more of a trauma bond than anything else. you could see the way he looks at her like he recognizes something and i think in that moment he was relating the 2 and just acted in the moment. kind of like. oh i have a second chance here i wont let it happen again type thing. But i totally agree with you about the whole thing about wanting to stay true to the story but wanting them to explore more. thats kind of the whole point of wanting an adaption, to see the things you dont get to see in the game, while also staying true to the original material. that 20 year jump really bothered me. they could of atleast spent a couple episodes on joel and life after sarah and the fall and how he ended up where he is etc. at this rate they gonna run outta stuff by the end of season 2 lol they better hurry up and make part 3 or there aint gonna be no season 3 lol
Allegedly the actor that plays Tommy in the show was one of the few that was actually given a PS5 and a copy of the game for research to make the character his own since Tommy has little screen time in the first game, to allow him to make the character his own while taking from the source. Also as someone that struggles with pronunciations I can’t say Episode either, the abbreviated term is just E.P. and you add the number if that helps.
Honestly i feel that they want this show to get people more into the game at the same time wanna give tv viewer a similiar experience to the games for none gamers. But i can understand last of us fans wanted the show to explore more of the world that the games couldn't.
oh its clear. Did you see how after the show ended the naughty dog twitter account tweeted something like *''enjoyed the last of us hbo show? just to remind you you can play tlou part 1 remake while the show is on going to learn more about the story''* or something like that 😂🤣
Well Joel was having PTSD of his daughter dying that’s why he attacked the Solider , that’s why they used the flashback . It wasn’t that he seen her like his daughter. Not to mention she’s a means of him finding his brother , his job was to deliver her . That’s all
Yeah people being stupid, i wanted to see a world war Z tier fall of humanity, how did the infection overwhelm the population. Didn't even need to be on that scale. It felt like a nerfed version of how the game played out. Ill just play the damn game if they gonna do a 1 to 1 !
As someone who loves TLOU, I realised that it's *so* difficult to watch/judge the series and not nit-pick how it differs from key moments in the game. But if you overcome this, you realise that the show so far is very good, while unique for its medium. For example, we didn't need to see Joel and Tess going after Robert for 20 min, and the show didn't do that.
oh definitely. You gotta put the game stuff aside and just try to enjoy the show for what it is. As a fan of the series though it's kinda hard not to lol
I agree with most of your coments, just the Joel's rampage on the soldier that I disagree, he did that because he remebered his trauma of losing his daughter in a similar situation and he just wouldn't stand there and let it happen again. But I thought the first ep...episode was pretty good, specialy the outbreak night, Sara's actress is outstanding, it's a shame she won't be showing more in the series.
Fantastic adaption, you expect things to happen and they do happen but in different ways you CANNOT predict. Hopefully the show evolves as well as the game did with relationships and tough moments.
Just finished the episode, honestly it was pretty good. I watched it with my family and since they never played or watched anything about the original game, it was cool to see their reactions and thoughts on it. They all loved it and are hooked for sure lol. But with me having played the game there were some things I liked and some I loved. Starting with the good, the opening was much better IMO, the slow build with the elderly neighbors and seeing sarah actually get the watch fixed while some panick started to settle in with the general public was pretty cool. The plane crashing during the car scene instead of the car crash was also a nice twist. Another positive was the girl playing ellie seems to be KILLING it and the speculation I had about her was put to rest. I also love the casting for Tess and Tommy. My main gripe is Pedro as joel, he seems solid but definitely could've been cast much better, but my opinion can definitely change as I see more of him. but overall great episode and again, watching with people who haven't played the game is a fun time lol. solid 8.5/10 from me.
I'm shocked nobody mentioning the troll Ellie they killed off they know they purposely made that little boy/girl (idk which one) look just like Ellie from the game just different shoes and killed that character off for the people that didn't like the Bella Ramsey casting LoL
I don't think it was so much caring about ellie at that point. I thought of it as his ptsd kicking in being in the same situation and his switch flipped. I also would love some branching out from the game, but I also understand that lots of games turned movie/series get criticism for not staying to the script.
Ngl the runners in the TV version literally reminds me of the infected from the South Korean zombie shows and movies like Train to Busan, Kingdom, All of us are dead oh and WWZ
I have my issues but I think my biggest would be the new motivations their giving Joel. Joel didn’t have ANY motivations outside of survival before Ellie. Ellie gave him purpose and brought him back from just being a survivor. So him already having his own agenda to find Tommy is just weird for me. Plus he knew Tommy “never wanted to see his damn face again!” Soooooo we’ll see. Also the PTSD thing or whatever happened with the soldier was a little off putting. Again Joel was just a survivor for 20 years! It took a long time for Ellie to spark anything outta Joel.
Keep reviewing the episodes bro we all love this game and we gotta talk about it 😂. But I agree with your critiques but a good show so far let’s see how the rest of the episodes pan out.
Loved the review. But I think u misunderstood Joel’s reaction when he had a Sarah flashback and killed that cop. I think he just lost it and it wasn’t Ellie that made him care it was the flashlight in his face just like the Sarah deal. It just brought back memories that he can’t get over. Wasn’t him giving a crap about Ellie
When you broke down that Joel didn’t care about Ellie for that flashback to be necessary that made be think. That was a bad decision because the entire point of the story is how Joel grows to love Ellie an it wasn’t instant.
like we were saying in chat and I believe the behind the scenes said it was more of a ptsd moment for Joel but because a lot of the dialogue in that scene was cut that the game... it made the entire scene felt rushed and incomplete. Probably the scene I disliked the most in the first episode
Now I saw the review. Gamer 2323. It’s not implying he is getting attached to Ellie when Joel kill the soldier. Joel would have reacted the same way no matter if he got close to Ellie or not at this point. Joel wouldn’t allow any child to die after his own child died getting a flash back. I do think you are nick picking. I do agree that they cut too quick to the end of the episode like no big deal they discovered Ellie is infected but not turn yet. I do also agree that much more is needed to distinguish the game from the show with the nuisances in between the story. You need to see the slow process of how people get infected. I think the origin of how the infection began is also vital imo.
I didn't see that scene has him taking that fatherly role at all i took it as not wanting to get caught or as an act of survival. Overall great episode i think it blends enough of following the game and being its own thing at the same time
I like the first episode a lot actually, definitely has me invested. My thing is I’m glad they sticking to the source material verbatim, if they went completely left field people would be freaking out rn lol
That soldier getting his face beat off had nothing to do with Ellie. You know how many times Joel has probably snapped in beat somebody down because he's holding on to that old rage. Ellie being around probably sparked that image more than it would normally come up but it was definitely about his trauma and not protecting some new chick he just threw into a wall. Ellie is the mission and oh dude was about to end the mission.
I didn’t watch your review but to put my 2 cents in. TLOU episode 1 was a good start. I checked it out by Doing the 7 day trial. I think I could see the 2nd episode before it expire. Mind you I have done trial before to watch a movie or 3 in a week. I I still don’t plan to watch the entire season. I know how things will end. I think the one weak point. No matter how insignificant it may be. Joel cry was weak performance compared to the game when his daughter died. I didn’t feel the impact like the game. I think Ellie was actually pretty good performance despite her still not looking anything like the game Ellie. I will give credit where credit is due. So far this is way surpass uncharted movie. I still ain’t buying the stupid no mask nonsense because that really take away the impact of the virus not airborne. I will watch you guys review on how they handle that. I ain’t paying for subscriptions outside of prime member. I don’t want to pay for HBO monthly with $40 price hike in 2 yrs. My wife will Renew for prime when she get her new job. I also think Sara being black doesn’t make sense either. I guess all this BLM nonsense is the case. Yes I am a bro and don’t care about that stuff. I ain’t into politics and all lives matter. We will always be marginalized just like many minorities. You can’t make people love you no matter how much pressure U place on others.
I loved the first episode and I agree with you about how they jumped to 20 years later. I was hoping they would show some of Joel's time as a Hunter. The game alludes to Joel and Tommy having done terrible things. Tommy says he has nightmares about those days and Tess says to Joel "we're shifty people ". I was hoping to see some of that. And yeah, the people who are fixated on Bella Ramsey's looks and bashing her because she doesn't look like Ellie are weirdos.😦 They need to listen to Joel when he says "I know you wish things were different but they aint"
agreed. they don't gotta spend a full episode on that or nothing. But at least have a few scenes showing more lore. Maybe we're asking for too much tho? 😅 Idk....I still enjoyed the episode a lot though
@@TheGamer2323I saw an interview with Craig that said, they may explore Joel’s past in later seasons. It seems they want to stay true to the first game in the first season and give plenty of room the exploration in later ones. He even mentioned exploring the Seriphite profit (the lady in the drawings) from part 2 for example.
Yeah that scene when Joel and Tess find out Ellie is infected definitely seemed pretty weak compared to the video game. Like you said the emotion wasn't there
I thought the first episode was pretty good for what it was. I wasn't hyped for the show because I already played the first game and know what to expect, but from what I watched it was pretty good. The effects, acting, and cast is good. I knew going in, the show wouldn't be a carbon copy of the game because then it would destroy the purpose of the actual game. I knew HBO wasn't going to greenlit a video game series if it was going to be exactly like the game. I like how some scenarios is fleshed out, especially for tv. Game developers want to keep us entertained so I would guess they rather have their counterpart to be more fast paced to keep the gamer engaged. Series tend to draw things out then a regular 2 hour movie. I know some points in the show happened way too soon for other viewers liking but we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out, you know. I did enjoy the few Easter eggs like the burning house/farm which was straight from the game. I also watched the Halo series and thought it was pretty good. It did things differently and fleshed the lore out in a different way to fit a tv series. I read they wanted to humanize master chief, but not to spoil anything, by the end of the season, I would say that's when the master chief everyone know and loved comes about. I'm looking forward to more of the last of us series and I don't disagree with gripes you have because you is entitled to your opinion. Especially a show about a huge video game series, I'm afraid if the series will taint what we already know and love but so far the series is looking bright
