Let's be honest, food shops shouldn't have 'bad days'. Sounds like they are trading on their past reputation. That is a slippery slope for a food shop to tread. Anyway, thanks for taking us along. Appreciated.

Burdocks is a very pale reflection of what it was when I first arrived in Dublin (1984). I'll never forget how good it used to be. Now it's mediocre, as I'm afraid you've discovered. One thing though: they had a technique of double-cooking (?) the batter, so it was always thick, but in a good way.

I am so sorry for the bad experience. You so much looked forward to being in Ireland. The batter of the fish was not cooked long enough. The batter was 'raw'. The chips were limp. A disappointment. 5 out of 10 is very generous of you. The sauces packed in plastic were produced in a factory. Let's hope that the next place will be much better. Ireland is supposed to be well known for excellent restaurants. Thank you for the review. Hope that you did not become unwell.

We eat with our eyes and immediately on first look I thought the chips were undercooked and looked anemic, the batter looked awful and the scampi looked very appetising! And so it proved to be. I was hoping for a stunning 1st Irish review after the Ramsay scam/let-down, but at least the scampi saved the day!

Burdocks was once good. What you got there is the norm rather that a bad day.

Next time you come to Ireland, come up north! I moved here 13 years ago and theirs some amazing eateries in Belfast and Antrim coast, particularly. Welcome to the Emerald Isle, our favourite channel! 🎉

As soon as that paper opened it was clear the batter wasn't cooked properly, a shame for a place with such history.

Leo Burdocks is a chain of chippers in Dublin. They have, (and that one especially has) been trading on the back of lazy reviews from people afraid to go against the flow for years now. . They just got very lazy on the back of recommendations in guide books. Locals don't go in there as it's a bit shit and very expensive. That's all you need to know. What you got from them is standard fare. Thanks for the very open and honest review on them (as per usual). There are loads of good chippers in Dublin, any of the italian family owned ones are usually excellent. McDonnells curry sauce is the biggest selling brand here by far, it's different to English curry sauce, but we like it. The tartar sauce is Blenders, used to be made about 300m away from where you were eating. Try a spice burger before you leave, available in most chippers and unique to Ireland. It's not spicy, but I'm curious as to what you think.

In the 70s and 80s Burdock's was wonderful. This was before Dublin became a global tourist destination. Then, come the 90s, they expanded all over city to cater for the influx and changed their menu and cooking methods. They were one of the last chippers to continue cooking with beef dripping which improved the flavour no end. Sadly, no more. Also, smoked haddock was their stellar dish, not cod

When you opened the fish and chips, the paper sticking to the fish, the anaemic chips and sloppy batter would have had me returning the meal with a positive complaint and seeking a refund for what was a poor quality meal. You are a very tolerant man Gary.👍👍👍👍

They’ve been resting on their laurels a long time. Thank you for your honest review. People in Dublin are in denial about how bad they’ve gotten.

A friend of mine several years ago set up a fish n chip shop. I couldn’t believe what is involved to produce great fish n chips. After months of researching, testing & trialing his product was excellent! I think most places become lazy & lose the love!

The scampi looked delightful, as for the fish and chips, they looked nothing short of appalling

These chippers live off their reputation of celebrities and the oldest chippers etc load of nonsense ……. Way over hyped and if you wine t back tomorrow or next week they will still serve you up the same crap fish and chips and think they are doing you a favour 😳 always keep your honesty that’s why we all love your channel 😀👍

I live in Ireland and I have to say it's pretty hard getting a really good fish supper. Not impossible but I think you're spoiled in England with good fish and chips shops.

Burdock's is a good sum up of modern Ireland, all about the money, quality comes 2nd now

Hi Gary, I'm Irish and I can tell you that you didn't go to Leo Burdocks on a bad day. Irish fish and chips are very mediocre, I didn't know good fish and chips until I moved to the UK. Anytime I bought fish and chips in Ireland, I rarely ate the batter, always the same soggy and thick. I think you are right when you say they should cook the fish in the same batter as the scampi. I hope you enjoy your trip. I can recommend Shanahans on the Green for steak (pricey) and Sole for fish. A good pub meal can be had at Searsons on Baggot Street. (Reasonably priced) Enjoy 👍👍👍

Good honest review Gary. As soon as i saw the ready made sauce, i guessed it would be rubbish.

I used to live in Rathmines in south central Dublin about 25 years ago and we had a Burdocks there. It was absolute quality , however judging by this video both portion sizes and standards have slipped !! Good to see you sampled the legendary McDonnells curry sauce....I stock up on it whenever I am back in Ireland now.

It's your honesty that makes your reviews so good. That's a real shame after making the effort to go there. I sometimes feel a bit sorry for an establishment, the quality could rise and fall with a simple shift change but at least it gives them info & the opportunity to improve. 🙂

Yes! I love when they serve the chips in the rolled up paper. So hard to find that anymore. Everything comes in those boxes now. Fish and chips is a childhood nostalgia food and not to be messed with.

Shall I be surprised about the batter, certainly not, happened loads of times to us. Tramore, best fish and chips, batter crispy, fab. At least the scampi was good. Great show again Gary😂

A moldovian family chipper called Romayos became the standard a while back. They have many franchises in Dublin. You'll often get a much better cod and chips in restaurants for some reason. As takeaways go, I also really rate 'Antonio's' of Cabra. Thanks for the great video Gary.

Hi Gary Yes those fish and chips looked shocking as soon as you opened the paper. They looked virtually inedible. The best things with it were the mass produced condiments which were the curry sauce and the tartare sauce! However, the scampi did look very nice and redeemed them some what but overall 4/10 for me. From what I can read they are living a bit on their reputation from the past and like a lot of eating establishments find it hard to maintain early excellence. Excellent as always mate and onwards and upwards in Ireland

I live in Leeds and when my family comes over from Ireland to visit, the first thing they want is fish and chips because they haven't got the hang of it in the chippers at home. You can't beat Yorkshire for fish and chips.

Got to be honest. Ive never had scampi with a prawn in it. Scampi to me is langoustine or lobster tail. 🤷‍♂️

I actually don't do much negative myself and understand you focusing on the positive. But sometimes, when things are really poor, I respectfully inform the vendor when I am not happy. It works for me.

As a tourist from the Netherlands I believe I had some nice fish and chips at “The Red Lion Parliament Street” (next to Westminster). I usually don’t fancy peas. But even the mushy peas were very nice! Finished the whole plate!

You’ll be very lucky to find any good food in ireland Gary, it’s a total desert. Everything done on the cheap and very expensive. I raised an eyebrow when you said you were going there.

A traditional restaurant known primarily for fish and chips is Steels Corner House in Cleethorpes. It’s been an institution for years and hasn’t changed since I was a kid. The jumbo haddock is superb and it’s well worth a visit. Give it a go, Gary when you’re next in the area!

Gary, don’t judge Irish food by what you get in Dublin, it’s probably the worst place for food in Ireland, try the other cities and towns where the real taste of Irish food can be had, not the plastic Irish food in Dublin.

As a kid when we went up to Dublin, we always went to Burdocks, for fish and chips. I remember it being really nice. I was Dublin recently and for old times sake I had a Burdocks. I have to say I was really disappointed with it, so was my wife. "of all the places in Dublin you could have taken me too" lol. She's no problem drinking in Fibbers though. 😂

There's definitely better around in the city. Beshoff's has always been my favourite whenever I've visited Dublin.

When a Fish is Wetter out of Water something ain't right.

You’d have to cook that batter for another 5 minutes but then the fish would be dry. Batter recipe all wrong. More beer/soda needed

remember your recent Tesco lunch/diner, you wanted to go back and retest...this is a perfect example, of a go back and try again...fried food places are sometimes very dependant on who is cooking/frying, when(time of day) etc...a fish chip shop may just be a good try to retest! Gary.. if you want top class fish & chips you need to travel to cork. I’ve three suggestions for you.. Lennox’s Bandon Road, KC’s in Douglas & the golden Fry in ballinlough. Any one of these establishments won’t disappoint & have been in operation over 40 years.

Kinda funny story, Sat nite my hubby + I binge watch ur vids with some beer + munchies + call it Sat nite with Gary. My sis txted me yesterday asking me over + I said I can't b'cos it's Sat nite with Gary. She asked if I cud reschedule Gary. I burst out laughing + explained the situ. I have yet to eat Fish & Chips in Ireland that’s of quality. I always find the same problem you encountered, that’s undercooked chips and poor batter. My recommendation is ChipWick in Worthing, West Sussex. Absolutely fantastic.

l would have taken the fish and chips back and put them on the counter in front of ever one same as l do when l get bad ones in bridlington the place l live

My local chippie Daniels only cooks fish to order, so it's always fresh, hot and the batter is light and crispy. For a professional chippie there's no excuse for poorly cooked batter, it ain't rocket science

Hi Gary, love the channel, Englishman that lived in Galway for 15 years here….you seriously need to get to Galway and visit McDonaghs for the best fish and chips in Ireland (I’m sure someone else has mentioned this in the comments) while you’re there you should visit charcoal grill for an incredible kebab, keep up the good work 👍🏻

Burdocks not a patch on what it was in the 80's and 90's.Absolute muck these days.They had an old coal fired fryer back then.

I'm a Brit retired and living in Cyprus . I beleive we have the best fish and chips here in Cyprus with Lambros fish and chips based in dekalia . They offer cod , haddock , and plaice and it is amazing , I've been coming for years and am always amazed how consistently exceptional it always is .

I have to say Gary that the look of the food served agrees with much of our verdict.

Try the Ashvale in Aberdeen Gary.. the Whale is outstanding. (Portion size, that is!)

When a chippy has to put up boards and give out flyers on the famous customers they've had you know it's gonna be shocking.....go where the locals go, not the tourists....in fact you need to come to Hull if you want proper fish and chips. Never the less, great review pal 👏👏

Spot on review !! Years ago i had the chips and they were soggy and lacked any colour or taste. I saw the cod and it was exactly as described in this review. People go on endlessly about Burdocks and i could never understand why !!

Try Alex's chippy in Beaumont they have amazing fish and chips and their pizza is lovely, also I recommend mizzoni pizza is also amazing they have the wagon wheel the largest pizza in Ireland 24 inch and its really nice

Spot on review, was there about 3 times in last 20 years, couldn’t believe that batter /bread at the time, never went there again. I note the one that opened in Naas (a busy town near Dublin) closed recently. Might try the scampi sometime on your experience but defo never going to have fish there (in batter) again. 😊

Burdocks has gone down hill in my opinion. They used to feed you well now its mean and costs a fortune. Living off the name. Not the same anymore. Disappointing

The curry sauce biscuits legendary in Ireland, every kitchen has a tube.

If you are going Southside, maybe to Bray. Please try Daata by the seafront. I remember going to them when I was in my 20s. The Mum used to cook from a small kitchen. Now they have multiple locations. So, so delicious, expensive now, but worth it. The prawns are massive!

Gary as a fish and chip expert, as soon as i saw the food i thought oh know, fish should have lovely Crispy batter, the cod will have flavour and BE flaky ,chips should BE 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀crisp on outside fluffy inside, also love scampI, but food is food and can vary, all the best to you and son as your pushing 95

Another great review Gary. I can’t get my head around one of the oldest meals Britain & Ireland are famous for & they can’t even get that right. The batter is the most important part of fish & chips & if the flavour is done correctly, it’s amazing. Unfortunately it’s very rare for most chip shops to get the batter right. If they can’t get it right after 100 plus years, they are running the business on past reputation.
