One interesting thing about the We R Memory Keepers typewriter is it's a great example of the difference in the way things are built in general between today and say the 40's or 50's when the Typewriter was at it's peak. The WRMK typewriter is basically a throw away item. Use it till it breaks, (if it's not broken when you get it) and then buy a new one. Pretty par for today where just about everything from phones and computers to home appliances are pretty much incapable of being repaired. Compare that with the golden age of typewriters and as you said, all of them were made to be taken completely apart and repaired. You bought one typewriter and likely used it for decades. My old Remington typewriter is a breath of fresh air compared to all of my other things I use for work, my computer, my phone, tablets, all throw away, but my old Remington Rand Model 5 will probably be with me till I die, then get passed on to someone else. Basically the only thing that can stop the old typewriters from being used forever is the eventual end of parts availability, and some crafty people are even finding ways to get around that. The irony here, is the We R Memory Makers typewriters, probably won't last long enough to actually make any memories. No one will remember the books written on them, there will be no lists of authors that used them. They're a fantastic analog of the here today, gone tomorrow world we all live in now.

I appreciate your points, and I very much agree about the lasting power of a traditional manual typewriter (of which I have 30+ so I'm a big fan of them!). I do think there is an audience for this product- people who maybe aren't as interested in the effort that goes into the maintenance of an older typewriter. Because it's a throw away item, there could be a mindset that it's easy to use now and get rid of later, and for some users that may be what they are looking for. A manual typewriter can be a big commitment! Personally, I now see the value of this Memory Keepers machine as my parts machine- I don't have any emotional attachment to it, and because it's built not to last, I don't feel bad taking off springs to put in my other machines.
@XoaGray

@@JustMyTypewriter For sure. I’m not saying they don’t have an audience, I was more just musing over the difference between a modern typewriter made in the modern way, and what we once had. And how they relate to they time periods they come from. There’s a beauty in it, even today the typewriter can be looked at as a symbol of the times.

I bought one a couple years ago and had to return it same day. It was the first typewriter I'd bought, and now I'm on the hunt for a vintage machine. I want something that's not all plastic and just going to fall apart.
@JustMyTypewriter

Vintage is the way to go! Try going local with Facebook Marketplace- or if you want a professionally revamped one that's been totally restored, consider buying from a professional. I suggest The Type Space, Lucas Dul, Mr. and Mrs. Vintage, Nashville Typewriter, or IronFox Typewriters just to name a few!

I've been waiting for someone to review one of these. Perhaps they do still have a place, and I take your point... but the build quality is just so inferior. I doubt many of the parts would be compatible with other models. I'm happy for key-choppers to use these machines though! Also, your studio looks nice, so well done with that. You may want to continue to tweak the lighting a bit, but it works well already.

Sadly, it's the only new typewriter being sold right now. They keep slapping different brands on it or different plastic covers, but it's always the same cheap Chinese typewriter inside. They even sell it under the Royal brand. Don't be fooled!

Hi Sarah, your content has been quite helpful as I just got into typewriters a few weeks ago. At 9:09, you said that your SM9 has the touch tension control on the outside. My first vintage typewriter is the SM9, and if yours is like mine, then that actually is the tab set and tab clear! + to add, - to clear the current tab. The touch control is inside the machine. I’m sure you maybe figured it out since this video came up but I wanted to let you know just in case you hadn’t. Keep up the great content.

I saw one for sale cheap at the Goodwill a few years back and it seemed that the typebars themselves were also plastic made to look like metal. That would account for much of the poor quality printing. At least Michaels were somewhat honest in their print advertizing at the time about that poor print quality by saying in some terms or other that it gave your work "that home-made old-timesy look" . I left it on the shelf.

i feel the argument for "not made for enthusiasts and is more of an off the shelf item for people who dont want to learn everything about typewriters to repair an old one" is invalid. starting off, 200.00 to 300.00 is more than enough to buy a fully restored, cleaned and tested original machine, which means you get a superior product for the same price with no hassles other than having a local store or shipping, but a typewriter store will know how to properly package a typewriter anyways. in the past month i have aquired 4 machines under 40.00 that do not require any repair, just some cosmetic cleaning which anyone can do in 10 minutes. 10 minutes of soapy water and 40.00 for a real original machine beats a 200.00 + price tag at a store. i bought my machines for creative writing and making homemade greeting cards which is esentially the same market as these machines. I use facebook market place and local pick up which means i can ask to try it out and see if it needs repairs i cant do.
@JustMyTypewriter
@JustMyTypewriter 2 года назад
I also use that method, but I do think that it can be hit and miss. You might find a great machine at a low price and have no issues or you may run into something very difficult to fix and not know what to do!

Love this view ! I’ve been waiting so long to see a review from a fellow typewriter collector who can compare between the OG’s Vs. “Crafting / hobby typewriters. These could be ideal for those who may struggle with a heavier machine especially if the typewriter isn’t out all the time. So for example my Great Grandma - in her 90’s.. she doesn’t “do” MS word and finds that using a pen now irritates her arthritis. So she doesn’t write as much. I’ve offered her my Olympia Spendid but she found it “heavy” as it is full metal. I’m going to look out for one of these 2nd hand and see if she like it better. You got a bargain at that price - in the UK they were not sold to us directly only via a 3rd party retailer which made them with tax almost $300!

There are a few places to get typewriters if you're looking for a manual typewriter that's been restored. Try independent sellers! The quality of this machine has allot to do with what people expect things to cost. Vintage typewriters were very expensive machines in their time: My Olympia SG3's MSRP was over $2,500 adjusted for 2023. Even the cheaper portable manuals from the 50s-70s were over $1,000 adjusted. There's just so much labor, engineering and high quality metals that go into making a decent typewriter, and nobody is willing to pay what it would cost to make a decent machine. Why would you care? An older model works just as well, and can be fully serviced for way less money. For the amount of people who still use manual typewriters, there's more than enough to go around. This thing sells for $200, which means that they cut their costs to the bone. It does the absolute minimum to work out of the box to reach that price point. I doubt that they could price these even a cent cheaper.

It's a symptom of the 21st century where manufacturers make things cheaply and you have to buy new stuff every year or so. iPhones should last 10 years for the amount of money people pay but they are designed so you can't repair them. A real pity. I've heard you can buy brand new ROYAL typewriters that are built in China. I have looked these up on Amazon (they don't ship to the UK) but curious if anyone actually buys them

In my opinion this toy is not an option for writing. This thing is overpriced and has no duration, it is a onewaytypewriter. It is so easy to get a good and fancy portable like the Olympia Traveller or a Tippa, an Olivetti 22 or 32 and many more, and they last and bring a case . A little research or asking a typwriter nerd and there will be better options.

Bravo! Your videos are very nice! this machine, let's face it, is utter crap; one must be out of his/her mind to buy this shit; for 20 bucks, you can find a nice Olympia, Hermes, Brother, Olivetti, and these machines, even half a century old, will perform flawlessly; all there is to do is do some cleaning/degreasing; anybody can do this! I found a Smith Corona Silent Super from 1957, I paid 20 euros for it, and it is like new...so, even if one intends to use a typewriter twice a year, why spend 200 dollars for a poor beast that can't even type straight? (excuse my english, I'm a bloddy froggy, and I still can't stop buying typewriters...about 80 of them isn't enough, it seems...)
