Making sure to catch everything though layers and layers of ties, plot and breadcrumbs is hard work. Pushing through and trusting the process is everything. It will take as long as it takes do make it the work it deserves to be. Thanks for sharing and good luck with the book! The breakthrough with Enid sounds incredible.

Frances McDormand, in the cellar, with the statue? LOl! I don't usually cast characters, but when I was done my first book I did have a feel for who could play two characters. It was more about the vibes they gave off than their physical appearances. I don't usually see faces all that clearly either. This video reminded me so much of my own revision, only it lasted a year for me! I'm so glad to be done with that book (for now) and I'm finally querying. In the meantime I've started something new and my plotting/outline has been going on for a month and feels just as messy and never ending! I keep changing my mind and direction. 🙃

HA!! Okay, that cracked me up. (And while Frances is not who I was thinking of, I LOVE her, she is incredible). And I'm happy to hear you're working on something new! Yeah, it seems like every stage - brainstorm, outline, draft, revise - starts out all fun and exciting and then turns into a death march through a swamp.

Take heart! 96K is a big book. Lots of editing involved, as you know. But I think you're a genius to split it into 4 parts! I'm going to use that method for my next book. You're doing fine. You do a full-time-job's worth of writing for clients, so you are making excellent progress. Sending hugs and occasional bursts of energy. 💖

It's funny that you've posted this video today because I told my husband I had to delete a 2500 word scene because it didn't feel right to me and his reaction was: "Not again!" I've tried telling him that it's a messy process but I don't think he really understands. He thinks you start at A, you have your route map, you start walking until you hit Z. My process is more like set out from A, detour to G, backtrack and re-write - new route to O - hate it and go back to H, get lost around S, nearly give up at U and arrive at Z about six months later than I'd planned to! So, I'm with you. Writing is messy - but the reward is worth it in the end! I've learned that I just need to keep pushing through all the hard stuff or I'll get distracted by a new shiny project. Keep at it. You'll get there.

I love your honest discussion of the messiness of revision. I really appreciated this quote specifically: "It's going to happen out of order. But it doesn't mean it's out of control." In messy revisions / rewrite stage and hearing this made me feel a lot better! I do cast a lot of my characters. But it's not something I spend a lot of time on. A lot of time, an actor (especially one I've been watching a lot) takes over a character very naturally as I'm brainstorming the story. But if that doesn't happen, I don't force it and my brain just creates a person. Just curious about your mental casting - was it Aubrey Plaza? Just based on the vibes you described, she's the one who immediately came to my mind. Thanks again for a great video!

Ahhh, I feel like we're in similar boats. I've only written romance novellas, and am revising an 80K cozy with a romance subplot with more POVs than I've written before. So many jello balls in the air, so many character / mystery revelations that take me back to the beginning for fine-tuning. I have an actor in mind with some characters I've created. I used to rely on that in my earlier projects a lot. In this latest one, I only had one actor in mind for a side character. And two other actors for other characters have come to mind while writing/revising. What's been pushing me through is how much I love my characters and how much I want to do them justice. Having a face to the names just gives me a little extra boost.

@Michelle Schusterman I made a realization recently that the world I have been building and writing had been a form of escapism so I almost literally grew up with these characters. They developed as I grew. Their stories changed when I was experiencing something difficult. The draft I'm working on is a quilt of so much of my life and myself. The idea of publishing this story is both exciting and humbling.

You can't forget this is your first venture into an adult mystery novel. Really every novel is new, and will have it's own process, but especially in a new category and genre. And the way I've seen editing is: "I got this!" stage followed by the "I don't got this". That just seems like baked into the process because stories are meant to evolve. So you have PART of the story when you feel "I got this" and then once that is down, you realize you are missing another part. So you're not actually doing anything wrong. It's just part of the illusory (is that a word?) nature of writing. And that can happen twice if you're lucky, but sometimes happens over and over until the story is done rotating in your brain and fully evolving. But you know all this. I only say it because sometimes it's good to hear what you know from an outside source.

I definitely have actors I cast in the role of my characters. The actor for my current WIP has been "cast" as the MC for both that and another story, plus as a side character in that NaNoWriMo series I was working on forever ago. His real life acting talents are so amazing and his voice has this perfect quality to it that the dialogue just flows for this character and gives his narration so much voice. Another character I have changed drastically from a mopey teen to an upbeat 20 something year old with the personality of a curious puppy all thanks to seeing the performance of a different actor who, on screen, embodied this character's clothing style and overall appearance. Before I usually had voice actors in mind for my characters, my stories mainly fantasy. But as my work goes closer and closer to realism, in my mind, I'm finding actors that fit the bill. I'd recently taken time off from working on my writing, at least for my two main WIPs I'd been working on, and when I tried to get back to it I realised I lost the voice in my head. Having to rewrite the start of one of the books half a dozen times before I clued in to the fact that this was my voice and not the MC's showing through. So I popped online and watched interviews and videos and favourite clips of the actor who inspired me and was able to get back into writing with a clear voice and idea of where this story should be going. That all being said, I'd thought I was the only one who did this. And for some reason it made me feel like I was copping out by not coming up with characters and their voices on my own. So it's great to see that's not the case. 😅 Anyway, I hope your writing and work are going well and just wanna remind you that you got this. Sandstorm is going to be awesome in spite of the doubts it's giving you, because you've already cranked out so many great books and had so many awesome ideas (thinking still on Dragon Balloon and Nil) that this will come together in the end. Your doubt is just a tool to ensure you make it the best it can be before putting it out on submission. Good luck! And I hope your weekend is amazing. ❤
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor Год назад
That's so interesting, K! It's awesome that watching those clips helped get you back on track.I really don't think it's a cop out. I mean, I bet most actors who've given amazing performances would be able to list a bunch of other actors who inspired that performance, you know? I get inspired with new book ideas when I read. I think that's part of the creative process! Also, than you for the words of encouragement. I'm going to keep going - and I know you will, too! :)
@Iwasonceanonionwithnolayers
My characters look how they look for a particular reason, so unless the reason is "this person's face is really x and I think they'd make a cool x kind of character" then I come up with their physical description on my own. The characteristics actors bring to all of their roles may be sources of inspiration though. Like Patricia Arquette's soft voice
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor Год назад
Yes! That's such a great point - I've definitely had moments where one single aspect of an actor's performance creates a whole new character in my mind!

When a character first comes to me, I have a general idea of what they look like: Gender, skin tone, and hair type. I use an Avatar-making app called Episode to then create the character, omitting eyebrows, eyes, nose, and mouth. That way, I have a general idea (complexion, face shape, hair colour) of the character's description during the first draft. Only when I've done a few drafts, do I pick real pics as inspo and only for my Pinterest board aesthetics. If I pick an actor early on, their character stereotype presets will affect how I see my character. E.g. They typically play the bad boy and my character is a saint. As a writer purist, I want the character to tell me who they are. I will mould and shape them into a great story but I find my characters turn out best when I let them form organically. Choosing a dream cast before I've written the first draft could mess me up. Is that weird? Have a great weekend, Michelle! Hi Rosa :-)
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor Год назад
That's so interesting! I love hearing about how characters evolve for other authors. It's always different from book to book for me. And no, that's not weird at all! I think a lot of writers find they need to actually write in the POV of that character for awhile before they find that voice/personality. Hope you have a great weekend too, Avi!!
