long time cigar smoker here and been thoroughly enjoying all of your reviews as i wade into the exciting world of pipes. really love your content! you, Muttnchop, and hobbiton piper have been my trusty trifecta.
So did I, but mine is Dunhill from 2017. It was ok at the time, now it's really good and I love it. Nightcap, Black Frigate, Royal Yacht and Bow Legged Bear are my favorites still.
I... have been the audience. You have been my good friend Bradley. One of my favorite blends. But I do like things a little on the sweet side. So that makes sense.
I've recently started to add Cavendish to my low country tobaccos, realy like it. The C&D Cavendish is not all goopie, little oily, but not all goopie. But I find it brings out the flavors of the burley and orientals in my outher wise very basic blends of Virginia mix with one of the aforementioned.
And I thought that Night Cap was great! It is great of course, but this one is an all day smoke and I love it. Burns really nice, absolute classic flavour, and the nic buzz is good. Stays tasty right down to the bottom of the bowl, to the point where I don't even know it's finished.
I revisited Nightcap last month and found it sweeter than I remember. My Dunhill blend sweet spot ended up landing on London Mixture and Durbar, and of course, they are still gone. G.L. Pease Westminster has replaced them though, and is probably better anyway.
Great video, as always. MM965 was once my absolutely favourite blend, with London Mixture close behind. When I moved to Korea, I couldn't get them anymore, and when I finally did try them again after a few years away, they weren't quite as good as I remembered them. I grew up on the Murray editions, so they had changed, but I suspect I had as well. Have enjoyed your channel for a long time but lately I've been binge watching your pipe vids--ones I've missed as well as rewatching others. Here are two tobaccos I'd like to see you review. I suggest these not because I love them (I enjoy them on occasion) but because they are unusual, category-defying blends. They are 'Boker Or' and 'Visions of Celephaïs'. Cheers.
I attribute the sweetness to the Cavendish. I agree that it's a balanced blend - too balanced, if you ask me. I prefer more Latakia and this blend is much to mellow for my taste. When Frog Morton was discontinued I embarked on a search for a suitable substitute, but the dragon has eluded me. I settled on Larry's Blend. I've had my 965 tin for some years, opened and smoked only once until today. The tin still reads, "Dunhill." Until FM is brought back from the ether, regrettably, all Latakia blends will continue to be just substitutes to me. Thank you for the review!
Dude!! Thanks for doing this one! This was my first English and I had a very similar experience. I went on to Lane’s Crown Achievement after a bit (a great English/Balkan with some Perique thrown in) and realized how sweet 965 is. That being said, if you dry it out in the tin a bit, the cavendish moves to the back and you get some great bitter and incense-y notes in front. Maybe try it again in a month or two! For me, it smokes best in my 60’s Peterson P Lip Billiard. Thanks again and happy smoking!
1000 points for using the computer sound from Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. Loving the revisited series. Didn't get to try the original blends bar the Night Cap but good to see the reintroduced blend's true to the original.
On it's on merit , it is a really good blend. But if Nightcap is your thing , it just doesn't measure up. But If Nightcap is a bit too much for you , 965 is probably money !

Used to smoke this when Murray's made it. Just ordered a couple of tins as I switched to Old Dublin when 965 was no more. Hoping the cut size is same as Murray's.
Really digging 965. I could smoke this all day. Yeah, the Cavendish is there, but i haven't found it intrusive. Just an enjoyable blend. I prefer it to SM.
Didn't like it that much when I brought some back in 2017, so I stored it for another day. I loved Nightcap on the first smoke though. I do like the aged 965 Dunhill version now. Very smooth.
I know you're going through the dunhill/Peterson blends as revisits for now but maybe later yiou should go through the Sam Gawith blends again! They are pretty solid classics in their own right.
I stopped smoking anything with Latakia. I started exploring pipe tobaccos about 3 and a half years ago. At first, I was mesmerized by it and, I was off on a Latakia frenzy. After a few months of regularly smoking English blends I noticed by palate started to diminish. I couldn't enjoy any blends with a a more subtle flavor like Orlick Godlen Sliced or Erinmore Flake. Neither of those blends I would consider to be faint of flavor. The worst part of it was that I couldn't taste good marijuana anymore, and I'm a connoisseur. I stopped smoking Latakia and Dark Fired Kentucky and, my palate came back to life. I now enjoy the flavors of Orlick Golden Sliced, Erinmore Flake and Marijuana again. It took a year or so for the ghosting to come out of my pipes. Now, whenever I crack open a jar with an English blend in it, I gag as soon as I smell the cedary baby puke like aroma of the Latakia.
@@petershallis2294 I have a lot of Latakia. I'm just wondering if one day I'll crack open some of my Frog Morton's Cellar and be taken aback. I've collected a lot of English Blends. One day in the distant future, it's going to be something I smoke every once in a while as a treat out of the ordinary. I think I overdid it with cedar incense cones. Now whenever I smell something cedary, I get nauseous. It might be something that will fade with time.

bradley, can u name some of your best english blends? I love this blend and tried night cap, ashton arisans, red rapparee, skiff mixture and few others... they were all good, though i find this to be the best... any recommendations?
My Mixture 965 was what I decided on for my first real go at an english after several reviewers mentioned the bit of sweetness it has. I'm previously exclusively an otc aro smoker. I have to say that I really enjoy it. The sweetness isn't overwhelming but it's there and is appreciated. I would like to try some more english blends on either side of the sweetness ratio from 965 to see which might suit me better. Just wondering if anybody has suggestions for a slightly more sweet english style blend and one with a slight step down in sweetness from 965?
Ever since college, where my English teacher used the little book The Elements of Style by Strunk and White, I've followed its guidelines, one of which says "Avoid the passive voice".It's a good rule. Rather than say "It would be much appreciated", why not say "I would appreciate it"?
I still.adore 965. For me it's a flip of a coin whether I prefer 965 or DSM, whoops, I mean PSM. I'd say 965 holds my interest more but standard mixture is perhaps more... I think you once called it "meat & potatoes". A good staple tobacco that never lets me down. One I've had much less often is BB1938 (baby's bottom), which I tend to find is smoother but possibly more bland. Maybe just less interesting than 965 or SM. Still an excellent smoke though, just doesn't ring my bell as loudly.
Hey Bradley, talking about "Scottish" blends, do you have plans on doing a review of Rattray's Black Mallory? Or have you had any? I've been eyeing some tins of it but I'm still not quite sure if it's worth buying or not (and I try to be as much as possible, because tobacco is VERY expensive here in Brazil). I bought a tin of this yesterday as it was all that was left in my local tobacconist in the Peterson range and has I’d never tried it before I thought I’d try it. And my honest opinion for me it was awful from the first draw it was what I’d call a spitting tobacco meaning every draw I took I just wanted to spit. The taste was left in my mouth all day and it wasn’t a pleasant taste neither. It was definitely not a tobacco I found anywhere near pleasant, but it’s like any tobacco if you don’t try it you will never know, horses for courses and all that. Free to good home if if collected!
@@stuffandthingsyoutube Thankfully the bank holiday is over and my usual tobacco delivery arrived before 8am this morning and I couldn’t wait to get my mix done. I smoke Samual Gawith cherry and vanilla mixed 50/50 with Erinmore, poor bliss sat out in the garden with a mug of coffee in a cloud of smoke! It’s rather a good mix wonderfull smoke, try it sometime you may be pleasantly surprised, and I’m sat now with my evening tipple of scotch smoking my mix in my Peterson red Killarney 221 fishtail.
Recently revisited MM965 and really liked it after being indifferent the first time I tried it. How does it compare to Plum Pudding? That blend is on my list to try.
Hi Bradley - I have been watching your videos for years now and I thoroughly enjoy all of your tobacco reviews. However, as of lately, it seems like you don't have the same passion (or level of interest) for doing the videos as you used to have. Almost as though you are "phoning it in" as they say. My comment isn't meant to be a criticism, but rather just an observation. I know that you have done over 100 tobacco reviews alone, not to mention all of the other videos that you have done on various topics. That being the case, I suppose that at some point it probably gets to be a little monotonous. Regardless, I love your pipe and tobacco related videos and cetainly hope that you continue to produce all of the great content that you have come to be known for regardless of all of the left wing, politically motivated demonetization that you have suffered here on CommyTube!
Used to enjoy the Dunhill version, just tried the Peterson version and don't like it one bit. The quality of tobacco is notably poorer. Might try it in a different pipe, but so far very disappointed.
I honestly don't find much difference between English vs American Cavendish. They're both sugary sweet to me. More importantly...how the hell have you not aged since the original video??
