So weird that Metal Warriors wasn't worked on by the same team at all, despite having so many similarities. Both are amazing games, though! Love your channel and glad to see you do these revisited videos! ♥
Amazed you didn't mention Front Mission 2: Gun Hazzard. And if You haven't played it. I highly suggest it. Same Game but RPG w/ Buying weapons and suits. As well as companions.
@@SaltySparrow Metal Warriors is one of my favorite games! I snagged it at a flea market decades ago for $10. Who'd have thought it would be worth so much today!!
This fucking team was 10/10 they really made you feel like you were fighting a solar system wide conflict with 90s tech. Absolutely brilliant designers, artists , ect. Even the janitor was on point to produce this.
As a kid, I was utterly fascinated by the little people walking around and the sense of scale that this gives you. "Duuuude look how huge everything is!" Never was able to play through the game tho
I always loved seeing the tiny people too lol. I got the game for my bday or xmas one year so I definitely beat it. I think the only game I owned back then, but didn't beat was Zombies Ate my Neighbors lol. Me and my buddy Alan got to the last level I'm pretty sure, we used to have a notebook that we would write down passwords for all games lol. But we just didn't have the skill/weaponry to take down the doctor lol.
Cybernator dev team went on to set up a new studio and made Front Mission: Gun Hazard, hence the uncanny level of visual and gameplay similarity. Also, the original composer of Cybernator, Masanao Akahori, started releasing his source version of the soundtrack of RU-vid which is worth a mention.
@@thanatos8618 Metal Warriors is similar but seems entirely developed in the West (both in terms of facts and visual and audio style). There are so many little things that feel off to me that I would consider it no more than a good imitation.
The Switch port is specifically the original Japanese version of the game newly translated into English, so it's got everything that Cybernator cut out - not to mention a ton of newly translated extras. Honestly worth the price for those alone.
"Cybernator, Metal Warriors and Front Mission Gun Hazard. What action-packed mecha oriented SNES games state-of-art trio, man! I'm so happy they are finally coming back. Great video there, drunk!"
2013? sheesh...10 years doesn't even seem that long ago.. it's on switch?! I must get this remaster. I always admired the sprite work in this game...absolutely beautiful
The Switch re-release has plenty extra stuff, like the ability to listen to the entire arrange album *and* take a look at all the concept art. Very pleasing package overall.
I'm definitely not a fan of the joycons, but a Pro controller or third party controller (like 8bitdo) definitely gets the job done nicely for this kind of game. @@PsychomachineryEBM
My dad bought me a used Dell desktop PC with this game pre-installed. That was 30 years ago. I tried to find this for 3 decades and now I found it. Thank you SNESdrunk.
@@sumit92artist Not 30 years ago for sure. There is no mention anywhere of a PC remaster version. Project EGG distributed an emulated version on PC in 2014. OP is clearly mistaken.
One thing control wise. It's either L or R. The other shoulder trigger button actually holds the position of your firing angle. It becomes really handy in space or regular stages when you're focused on trying to dodge while maintain your direction of fire/shots
I'm all for revisiting some of your older reviews like this. Not just because you can make a better video, but just yet as another reason to bring out these old gems for newer people to discover, or for older fans to revisit them as well.
Honestly, your original Cybernator video led me to play it, as well as Front Mission: Gun Hazard, and both have been fantastic classic gaming experiences for me over the past few years. But, again, your two Shadowrun videos might have saved my mental health, as now I'm a practicing GM for the table-top game, and that entire world got me through quarantine and the subsequent years of re-building.
I had no idea they put this on the switch. I used to play this all the time as a kid. I paused the video and immediately downloaded it to my Switch. Thank you so much. Now back to finish watching another great SnesDrunk video
Loved this as a kid, the level transitions were always a highlight. Entering earths atmosphere from space with the burning heat shield always did it for me. You just didnt get detail like that in games back then. Then getting on earth and seeing all yhe little people running around which showed the scale of the mech. :chefs kiss:
What I liked about this game was that the controls feels heavy, so you really feel like you're sitting in a giant robot or Mecha. For example if you slide, you can't cancel it and switch your direction instantly. So it takes some short of time to slide on till you can run on the opposite way. Insane good, but I also remember that the game was to hard for me being a kid 😅
'93: The game premiers. '13: 20 years later, you do a review. '23: 30 years later, you revisit your review. I love how cyclical that all is. I'd really be down for more of these revisited reviews. Especially for games that are this good.
Back in January of '93, less than a month after getting an SNES for Christmas, my brother and I bought Cybernator for $20 at Babbages. The first "blind buy" for us as we took a calculated risk because we didn’t know if was good or not (our allowance rate was constantly renegotiated), but we couldn't say no to the low price.
The US version has multiple endings actually. There was one level where you had to stop a ship from leaving the planet, and it's a timed fight. Win or lose, you advance to the next stage, but it affects the ending.
Nice update! One little correction though: At least as far as the Japanese version goes, once you unlock the Napalm Gun by shooting only the boss in the first level, you don't need to do anything else in order to keep it. There is a rumour that beating the second level the way you mentioned makes the Napalm Gun upgradable, but I've done that and it's not the case.
@@rafaelkuhn5154 You can actually see in SNESDrunk's own footage at 5:00 that he's unlocked the upgradable version: next to the weapon name there's an upgrade counter.
@@TomAznable Well observed! However, I believe you only lose the Napalm Gun if you actually die during the second level. The extra challenge of not getting hit/not destroying anything should enable the upgrade, but you don't have to do that in order to keep the weapon itself - I've never managed that steep challenge and always got to keep the Napalm.
@@rafaelkuhn5154 You're 100% correct on that - you definitely don't lose the Napalm unless you die on stage 2. It took me a few tries before I successfully unlocked the upgradable version, it's pretty tricky to not only avoid asteroids but those mines as well! There's one spot in particular where you drop down vertically a little before the boss where it's very easy to set off a mine.
One of my favorite games of all time. This game's music is forever engrained in my mind ever since I was 8 years old. At one time, it was the only game I had on the SNES since In decided to sell my collection as a teen, but thankfully I forgot this one to sell. Absolutely adore this game!
Kirby: Revenge of Metaknight HAD to take inspiration from this! They're so similar, and I love the execution of that Kirby mini-game! Because of this, I think I'd really like Cybernator, especially if they change it to have the dialogue go while playing like in Revenge of Metaknight.
Thank you for this video, I played this game as a kid with my brother and we both considered it one of the greatest games ever made to date but since we played it as kids we were unable to even remember the name, since english wasn't our first language it was hard for us to retain that information as kids. Still it's been so long that the only reason we were able to even believe this game was real and not a dream due to how good we thought it was it's because we both remember its existance, now thanks to you I can revisit my old memories with my little brother and can't wait to see his face once I get him the game for switch. Thanks again, man.
It does have the Japan ending where the president shoots himself when you confront him at his desk prior to the final part of the last stage. That part was cut in the SNES US version. It also has the secret Napalm weapon as well as the super secret make the Napalm weapon upgradeable secret. Both work and unlock the same way as before in Declassified. Oh and you don't lose the Napalm weapon if you don't upgrade it in stage 2, you just cannot upgrade it beyond the initial state. It's still in your weapon list and can be used, even in the cave stage that limits your weapons - both in the original and Declassified.
this was one of those deep memorys from early childhood along with games like rise of the robots, the gameplay, the music, the visuals all just left such a powerful impression, but they were just obscure enough that i forgot they existed, and never heard anything about either game until i did some digging online years later
I love this game. When I was recovering from surgery and laid up for over a month I beat Target Earth on my sega nomad. I consider that as My greatest ever achievement in video gaming.
You should consider uploading in at least 1440p. Even if you recorded the footage at 720p, using something like obs to upscale it to higher resolutions can really help on youtube. It's not like that upscale is producing any details that weren't there before, but 1440p and up on youtube gets a significantly higher bitrate. That means less artifacting and softness on edges. Two things that do not do old pixel graphics any justice at all. Keep up the good work dawg! I'm pretty sure we both started our channels around the same time. Insane how time flies.
"The Adventures of Bayou Billy" was another NES game that mashed genres. For the most part, it's a side-scrolling beat-'em-up. Then it turns into a first-person shooter, and then it has a couple third-person driving stages. The FPS stages have that rare trait where if you run out of ammo: instant death. It makes sense since, with no bullets, you have nothing to defend yourself with, or, ironically, nothing to pick up more ammo with. There's even a still-shot of Bayou Billy getting blown away when you die in a FPS stage.
I'm always amazed by how little time it takes you, SNES drunk, to beat these games. You can beat Cybernator in under two hours?! Jeez. I think it took me like 5 times that amount just to get through the first few levels. Mad respect
It really is one of the best Nintendo games. For everything this game did at the time, it could be considered the gold standard for a shoot ‘em up. Your ability to jump as he mention feels clunky because you’re a mech. Really adds to the feeling of fighting. The variety of weapons is also great. Power ups that you can find can be used on many different weapons, and you feel rewarded for exploring the level when that makes you stronger. The storyline is also pretty damn cool. You start out feeling like you’re just fighting in a war, but the little bits of dialogue and characters you meet give your soldier Jake personality. By the time you approach the final stage, it all blends together. You’re one of the last mech soldiers left on your ship, your ship enters the level looking absolutely thrashed to represent your brutal journey, and you’ve powered up your weapons to defeat the toughest enemies to come. I believe there is even a little romantic ending. When you complete the final level (the version where you don’t meet the big bad), you exit your busted mech and embrace the female communications officer that has been with you the entire journey. At least I assumed the two ended up together. Her starts out in the beginning as “just business”, but by the end she is genuinely fearful we might die. All of this packed into an hour.
I absolutely loved that game! I remember being like 13 years old when I rented it and when I shot the walls and floor and it left bullet holes it blew me away. One of those moments you never forget.
I really loved this game, the music and pixel art were amazing. I also really loved how they made your mech feel really heavy when walking jumping and landing
One aspect that impressed me back in 1993 and still does now, is the feeling of weight the Mech has. It is clearly a 5-ton death machine, and not made of papier mache.
DUDE! I'm so happy to see this on the channel finally. This game is such a hidden gem. This was fantastic in the 90s. One of my favourite SNES games and I used to lend it out as much as possible to spread the joy.
Quick note on getting the upgrade for the napalm gun. "All" you have to do is not get hit by the small destructable asteroids and only shoot the final boss like in the first level. That means the small asteroids in the beginning, the asteroids with the turrets later, and the asteroids that get spawned by the boss. You can get hit and damaged by anything else, besides the small destructable asteroids. There is like a single video on youtube about it and shows the playthrough and on level 3 how the dash got replaced with the number counter.
First let me say, I f*cking love your videos! I've been watching your videos for years. I also really like SNES Cybernator. I've never beat the game and I do find the controls somewhat frustrating... I never feel like I fully get the hang of the controls. I'm beater at the Shmup parts. But that's because Shmups are 90% of what I play. Anyway, great video, Bro.
I have this game complete in box since 1997. In my country we used to interchange games in the "tianguis" (kind of a flea market) and I interchange this game for my bootleg copy of a Dragon Ball Z game. I was so happy but my brother got mad at me hahaha. But I have not regrets, this game is amazing.
Your comment about the world fighting over oil was the best. I like your on-the-slick funny comments. “Yeah, that’ll happen” I’m still laughing over it
Fantastic game and a must have in your collection. You are right about the controls, at first that drove me away until years later I went back and said "I was a fool this is awesome"
Cybernator was awesome. Different and hard, but awesome. Should add, that the napalm gun is attainable through searching every stage for those power chips (you could usually get it by the burning city stage). And collecting all the needed chips X time limits on some stages = extra challenge. Great times.
I had no idea they re-released this game!!! ive been praying and wishing they would add cybernator to the snes app on switch, BUT NOW I CAN FINALLY PLAY THIS GAME I'VE BEEN MISSING SINCE CHILDHOOD!!! THANKS!!!1
Giving a heads up that Retrobit is doing a limited release of the original Assault Suits Valken with a English translation (unknown if it's using the new script from Declassified or not) and pre-orders are up now for it on the usual places in two flavors until 11/5!
Nintendo Power had early screenshots of this game and I was very excited to play it when it came out, it was one of the first games I played on SNES. I was disappointed that it didn't have the character portraits during dialogue but otherwise the level of detail and polish that went into it put most other SNES games to shame.
Yoooo I'm all about you revisiting old topics! Speaking of, you absolutely must redo X-Men Mutant Apocalypse - that game is soooooo good. Give that one a replay while utilizing the special moves, trying different combos and characters for replayability. Bless Drunk 🙌
Please keep doing these revisits. I do want to see moreof your improved reviews on older videos. Also some romhack reviews would be awesome too! Thanx for you work man.
The controls in this game are awesome. You can hold a button to lock on the direction you're aiming at, which is super useful. There's forward dash, shield, you can float in the air… No wonder this game inspires imitators decades after its release.
Every time i see a Assault Suit Valken video it just made me wish Assault Suit Leynos 2 on the Saturn got more love. For me it was the pinnacle of the 2D realistic mecha genre. It was hard as balls but so incredibly fun and detailed
When our video store sold all their NES and SNES games we got there the day after. All that was left were a bunch of sports games and this. I got this, my little brother got some other non-sport game but I can't remember what. Years later, like 20 or so, I sold this for like $400 I think. It was technically CIB, the cart wasn't that beat up, but the manual was pristine as our rental place xeroxed the manuals and then filed the manuals in their office. The box however had huge tears in it but the people bidding on it knew because I had lots of pictures on ebay. Had I sold it for as much as a loose cart I'd be kicking myself but since I got so much I don't feel bad. It would just be in a storage box somewhere in my parent's house but now it is probably on a shelf on display somewhere now.
I know that you mostly do SNES stuff and sometimes Genesis but I can tell you would really love a game called Wild Dogs (on Steam and most platforms.) It's a Contra-like that is a bit more forgiving but very creative with it's varying levels and play styles. You reminded me of a specific part of it when you mentioned kamikaze-ing into an enemy ship and I am HIGHLY confident you would both love the game and bring some much needed attention to it as it's currently very obscure.
Declassified does have the original ending! But the best thing about Declassified is all the extras, like they wanted to do a physical copy but didn't have the money to do so, the arranged OST created with the original sound samples is great.
Cybernator was one of the games that was almost always rented out at the 3 video stores near where I lived. The only was to hope to get it for the week end was to go thursday evening and if it was there to pay for it until sunday.
Congrats on the 10 years, and thank you for all of the great content! I bet even Bob Evil approves! 😅 Also, I've still yet to play this title, but it is officially on my list. Looks like a lot of fun!
I will add I am all for content creators revisiting things they may have covered already with a fresh set of eyes and their updated skills as a creator. Let's them re-evaluate popular items and after so many years it's probable most people have forgotten the older video almost entirely, or never watched it to begin with.
Some corrections about the napalm weapon: - On Mission 1: DO NOT SHOOT ANY ENEMY, INCLUDING THE TURRETS OF THE BOSS. FIRE ONLY AT THE CENTER MASS OF THE BOSS. -After obtaining the napalm weapon in Mission 2, all you have to do to keep it, is finishing the mission. You can take damage, but if you lose a life in Mission 2, you don't keep the napalm weapon. -The napalm weapon is insanely powerful, it one-shot kills pretty much every enemy and kills even bosses with 4-5 well placed shots. The downside is: it doesn't have much of a range and you need to fire it like a mortar in an arch, in order to hit enemies who are far away. Also, the napalm weapon, if used too much, needs some time to reload, like a cool-down, so use it wisely. Oh and anothet thing: USE YOUR SHIELD. Don't try to play this game like a typical run and gun like Contra. Move slow, use the shield.
Love even your old videos! But I think certain things like your humor and enthusiasm started off good and just got better over the years. Keep up the good work, man!
While the napalm weapon made the game super easy, my favorite weapon is always the laser. As soon as I get it, I'd focus on upgrading it to the max. I loved the giant beam just obliterating everything in its path. Such a great game!
Do the rest of the series too if you can. I’ve never played Cybernator, but for the 100th time I’m about to fire up a game that you’ve made a video about that I’ve never played before
I played the everloving HELL out of this Game and i would do so again as soon as i get this Game in Hands again. It's one of the best games on SNES and still holds up today. ABSOLUT nostalgia trip... thanks Drunk!
Love this game! One of my favorite SNES games! Love the video! Great work! Although, I don't remember ever losing the napalm gun after level 2. Maybe my memory is fuzzy or it was a different version or something.
