Knights Kingdom II was the Ninjago theme before the introduction of Ninjago and I loved it. Those knights had so much character and satisfying designs.

I love seeing how many themes draw inspiration from Knights' Kingdom with the four colorful characters. Exo-Force is another theme that feels incredibly similar, even though the setting is completely different
@FlushedNoob

Bionicle arguably introduced the color coded team to lego themes. The story team originally planned to just have 4 toa, one for each classical element, but lego wanted 6 sets.

@@FlushedNoob... Classic Space did assigned colors to specific specialist, but eXtreme Team predates Bionicle, and there were slight personalities to the characters in that theme, which featured assigned colors.

LEGO Executive #1: "Alright, Knight's Kingdom undersold, how could we make it cooler?" LEGO Executive #2: "Well what's cooler than knights? I can't think of anything kids like more than knights!" LEGO Executive #3: "NINJAS!!!" And thus, Ninjago was born...

I always thought this theme was a great mixture of more story-intensive themes like Bionicle/Ninjago/etc and the more “generalized” theming of many classic ranges. It was never hard to grasp for a newcomer looking for fun Castle sets, but it did have an ongoing narrative. Real shame about the interiors, though. We’re so spoiled by that kind of detail in sets now, it could get pretty dire back in the day

This was an awesome theme with great lore and interesting characters. I got Border Ambush a couple years ago for Christmas and it still holds up really well even after 20 years. The minifigs are super cool and unique too and I hope to get some more. It’s a great theme that I think is really underrated, especially in the LEGO Castle community. Though I’ve always thought it’s weird that this is the same theme as the earlier Knights Kingdom sets with the Bull Knights since they aren’t connected at all afaik.

About the chrome pieces, the reason why LEGO doesn’t do it anymore is for a few reasons: 1, the pieces which were chrome had to be made slightly smaller in order to compensate for the thickness of the chrome coating, which was annoying, and 2, the process of coating the pieces released harmful chemicals that I’m pretty sure also worsened global warming.

Yeah, having the alternate, slightly bigger mould is rough for each piece sucks

The variation and colors, all of the named characters and the storyline were so cool, and was one of my favorite Lego themes. I have a soft spot for Knights Kingdom. Unfortunately all my Knights Kingdom sets are completely disassembled and while I've rediscovered a number the pieces and Minifigs, I suspect that some might be in storage. I highly doubt I have it's box still. oh fun fact, in the LEGO Movie when Wildstyle was explaining how President Business put walls between the worlds, there is world called "Vladek's Realm." It's on the shot where it shows all the worlds divided on President Business' projector, and it's not the same as "Middle Zealand."

Danju got a little screwed by his power. Like, Jayko, Santis, and Rastus all have physical abilities that lend themselves to play features, but wisdom doesn't work as well for that. I kind of wish we'd gotten something like Tygura's Roar from the old Johnny Thunder sets. The main trap of that set can actually be circumvented in two different ways by putting torches through some conspicuous holes. It gets across the idea that Dr. Kilroy is outsmarting Tygura. I guess planning to be near a convenient catapult in the unlikely event that you happen to encounter the main baddie is a kind of intelligence, but they could have done something much more satisfying.
@CheeseyStudios
@CheeseyStudios Год назад
Love the idea of fighting near pre-built catapults LOL The trading cards seem to suggest some sort of puzzle for Danju in the Citadel - a tiled floor where only some tiles could safely be stood on. I wonder if there were ever plans to have that in the official set and if it was scrapped

@@CheeseyStudios I'm pretty sure "always make sure you have a conveniently pre-built catapult nearby" is in Sun Tzu's Art of War. If they got as far as actually designing it, I'd love to see what they came up with. But I guess it will just have to be someone's revamped citadel of orlan moc

Remember having a few of these and went to my grandparents and sure enough my grandmother kept them and my brother and i actually had ALL phase 1 sets(main map), spent 2 days putting them all back together and only missing 25 basic pieces ie flames and holders, going to look for them but worse case will just buy them to finish them all out. Huge nostalgia hit

I like to think the polybag minifigs with generic helmets are younger versions of the knights. Like maybe they were just regular soldiers until they were found and knighted. And I guess Vladek looked like Johnny when he was younger.

I had the Citidel of Orlan. I got it for christmas in 04 and our state had a winter vortex with freezing rain and most of the state was without power for the better part of a week. My mom dad and I spent christmas morning in our garage/workshop because the house was too cold and we had a wood burning stove in it so i built the set in the workshop that chrismas day. I also have a distinct memory of playing with one of the knights kingdom sets while watching Master and Commander Far Side of The World. This video brings back some memories.

Maybe "Vladek encounter" was supposed to be sold alongside those two last sets That could explain wju Danju isn't in the Knights' wall, because he was originally planed to be included in "Vladek's siege engine" along with the catapult. It sounds like one of those situations where somebody decided that they needed to split it into more sets so they could sell them separatly

I always called it royal blue, but now I know it's violet blue is probably my favorite blue. My wife sorted all my Lego by color and she said it was her favorite too. Shame it was short lived. But now look what you made me do, I'll have to go through my parts and see if I can't build this castle again! Amlsot 20 years later! The thing I liked about Lego back then, was like rock raiders, alpha team and these knights is that each character is unique head to toe. Newer themes have a too unified look between characters.

Knights' Kingdom was possibly the most foundational LEGO theme for me growing up - probably split between that, Johnny Thunder, and Bionicle. Those themes together informed my love for serialized storytelling, lore, character archetypes, and worldbuilding. Combining the comics with the sets, the trading cards, and the young reader novelizations starts to paint a surprisingly complete picture of the world they were building. I have all of the standard retail sets for wave one and two of KK, sadly missing most from the third wave. I also thought all the play features built into the sets were really solid, with the Citadel of Orlan being the real stand-out there. This theme will never fail to fill me with absolute nostalgia. And yes, please, absolutely do more Revisiting videos for the Knights' Kingdom line!

A little fun anecdote regarding Mike Rayhawk, behind much of the artwork of this line, is that he's also the one behind the unofficial lego-derived wargame "Brikwars", which apparently was more influential (mainly through the artwork for it) to Lego than they would ever admit a wargame about maximum violence, carnage and fun be.
