I love the sub, it's a great PO (in my opinion - I like the bassline sound generation and effects: I've not got a OP-1 or OP-Z and this little unit can craft some awesome basslines!
I'm further in the video, you dislike the drum kit ? Aww man, I absolutely love it ! I agree that the actual drums are limited, but trust me pair it with a PO-12 or Office or Po32, and let them take care of the drums and the Sub of all the ear candy and you'l see that they're terrific in a "adding interesting things to a drum kit" way :D The po-14 really can't be a standalone PO. Drums aren't there, and bass only gets a little boring. The Po-12 however is actually quite good being alone ^^
Yeah haha the reason I disliked it is because you almost have to pair it up with another PO. I'd imagine I'll like it quite a bit more once I get some "normal" drums under those bass tones though. Thanks for watching as always!
The sounds on this are unique to the P.O. collection. The sequencer seems weird if you’re coming from a gen 2 or above, but it gets the job done. If you approach it as a rhythm instrument, more so than melodic, it makes more sense. I sometimes use it to add a sparse pulse behind an ambient drone. It’s application is limited, but I like it for being so.
I bought this po bc I didn't like bass sounds on the Ko. But it's very difficult sequence something you have in mind, its more for random things. The sounds are very unique as a synth, that's good. Also if you keep pressing a note in the sequencer you can modify the length of the note with the B knob, bc is hard to make it on live sequencing
I love the Sub! Never use it for Drums, just Bass Lines. It has gnarly base, the FX and the * buttons both do separate effects that can be applied, and they can overlap! First Gen; I have the Sub and the Rhythm, and they are different to later models in many ways, they are limited to how many sequences you can chain together compared to the later models, only 16 if memory serves? I will say that both of the Gen 1 POs I own are prone to distortion, especially if left for a while, but popping the battery out and in sorts this out, refreshing the sound without losing the sequence. Using the Sub, the K.O. And the Rhythm/Tonic together I’ve made some fun improvised Techno, in better hands (better than mine!) these little beauties are really good at what they do.
Po 14 sub, Some amazing sound, a few hard to incorporate in a track, very tedious workflow with a few bugs in my experience which breaks my experience. If it had the sounds, but the ease of the Po-33. Id like it ! But some pattern chaining bugs, and how complicated it is to me to enter a melody and FX recording, it breaks it to me :/ Teenage engineering, if you make a remake, I would love it! PO : 12, other than the pattern chaining quirks, amazingly fun and easy to use :D Highly recommend you get one !
Hey FB, I own a PO33 and PO14 and like you say, the difference between the generation 3 and 1 sequencing is jarring. I struggle to pick up the PO14 purely because of the weird quirks that I can't quite figure out. For example, any automation on the patterns seems to be impossible to clear without going through the lengthy process of overdubbing it all, and even then it's inaccurate as hell. Would love some advice or tips to get the hang of it if anyone has any!
I keep the sub on my desk just to noodle with while I'm at work. I don't really use it for music production, more as a toy to clear my head for a few minutes while I work on some problem. I like to program in a drum beat and then live play over the top of it for a little jam and then it goes back in the drawer when I'm done.
My biggest problem with the gen 1 POs is the very limited pattern chaining. You can only chain 16 patterns! I didn't discover this limitation until I tried to make a song while sync connecting my PO12 to my PO20. I was thinking I messed up my chaining because the sound was all wrong. A little research and I figured it out (interestingly, the PO20 can chain 128 patterns!) Otherwise, I love the simplicity and rawness of the gen 1 POs. The PO12 is a beast!
Yeah that's a little rough haha. I'll definitely be sampling the PO-14 into my PO-33 or PO-133 for the album just so I can get around that 16 pattern limitation. Thanks for watching!
My first PO was the 16 Factory (I've since gotten three others- the Office, KO, and Speak). Yeah, it's limited compared to later generations but it's great for melodic synth leads. I don't know if this is the same on the 14, but the "key" button activates punch-in arpeggio effects. Along with the "style" effects, that's a total of 32 various punch-ins, which really is a lot of performative options.
I'd like to pick one up eventually, but since I already have the Tonic (I know they're completely different machines) it's not high on my list haha. Thanks for watching!
Yes, the sounds are excellent on the sub, I think I told you before I have my series running through a digitech droptune so everything is in C until I change it which may be why my opinion of this little gem is higher than yours. Jus my opinion! I’ve come up with some legitimate great jazz sequences and the Sub is incredible with a little tweaking sounds like a fretless! Peace
If you are on melody sound Be in writemode and press long the note of your sequence (1-16) and turn knob b or a while you holding the note You can change the length of your note But i really really really want to know is the po14 sub (looks pretty but sounds shitty) can do acid Really Can it do acid Acid sounds shit so maybe But i never found somebody who do a kinda acid bassline on the sub
@@FreeBeat yes i found it also 1 year ago I searched exactly for 1 year (covid stretch the time) for a acid techno demo But still Its only 1 video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YOmTGk_83sE.html The other videos are bot really acid
I bought the Rhythm and loved it. I bought the Factory and immediately regretted it. I bought this one and felt it works best when paired with a more advanced PO. This week, though, I had a breakthrough with the Factory and it made me reassess its abilities. I hope to have the same experience with the Sub. Funny, you must have given yours to Oliver before I started watching with regularity bc I always thought it funny you didn't have one🤷♂️
Years ago, when the Gen 1s were new, a friend (who had a lot more disposable income) lent me his Pocket Operator. I couldn't remember until now whether it was a -14 or a -16, but listening to this, I think it was a -14. I remember being quite impressed by how much was crammed into the thing.
Thanks for making stuff! Been a huge help learning more about the POs! I gotta ask, I've been considering getting a sub to pair with the KO, love the sounds but wondering if it's instead worth getting into the chiptune side of things with the arcade or megman! Would be fun to pair with LSDJ! Do you have any recommendations? Either with those POs mentioned or any other? :0 In either case all the best! Thanks again with everything! ♥️
I suppose it really depends on how much you like chiptune haha. The sub would pair really well with the KO, as it sounds awesome but the sequencer is rough to use. But the Arcade or Megaman would probably be a lot of fun with LSDJ, especially with a PO-33. You'll have fun either way :)
@@FreeBeat super appreciate it! Think I might go for the MegaMan ....I don't know why but I feel compelled to try and make some 8-bit jazz covers haha! Thanks again with everything! Have an amazing day!
Its one of my favorites for jamming with friends without music knowledge. I play a rumble kick on Syntakt and use the effects on the PO randomly to get amazing rhythms 🤯
I have a PO 16 and PO 33 but I have a PO 14 coming and this makes me really excited this can make some really neat noises. I also have an arcade coming that I got cheap with a broken speaker, tho I plan to just sync through another PO.
This was my first pocket op as well. I tried to sell it after I got the arcade. Somehow it makes it's way into my set up every time. There's always a happy accident moment I have with the sub.
@@FreeBeat I try to lay my notes down then I'll go and choose tone and note length. Then I'll press play and mess with the sequence after it's all laid down. Agreed its the most odd PO to mess with.
My favorite approach is to pair the PO Sub with another PO. First I program a catchy bass groove with the Sub, then I switch over to the other PO for everything else. No other PO does bass quite like the Sub!
