Tonight I go back and revisit one of the 1st objects that I imaged as I started in the Astrophotography hobby. M104 (The Sombrero Galaxy) is a Galaxy 29 Million Lightyears from Earth near the Virgo Constellation. Tonight I Image it from my Bortle 6/7 Backyard, hoping to get a better image than I did 12 years ago.

Great video Jason! Your 2012 version is pretty good mate, but your latest image is excellent! Nice to see the equipment you were using from 12 years ago, and comparing it to today’s equipment! The gear is getting better all the time! 😀 Clear skies Jason!

I had so much thermal noise in the 2012 image. the camera was cooled but not regulated, I think when I started the imaging session it was 101F at 9pm. Agree that the gear is getting better all the time. CS

WHOW!! What a difference! I already liked your first picture, but the new one, oh boy 🤩! Great job! I love sombrero, already the name is so intriguing, and its unique shape makes it a beautiful target. The amount of detail of the rim in your new image is just astounding. I took pictures of it with my dslr behind the NexStar 6SE and it's alt-az-mount 3 years ago. No comparison of course, but still blew me away what is possible with that simple setup! Thx for sharing.

Thanks Stefan! I wish I knew how to process Galaxies a little better. I really struggle with them. It is amazing what we can capture with some glass and mirrors when we point them up at night!

Lovely job Jason, that old camera there was amazing, seemed huge but cool to see astrophotography back at this stage too.

Think I might try and use it again now to see if it is still relevant. It is the size of a small dinner plate. CS

Hi Jason, Yep, big improvement over the 12 years, and that's with the 2012 capture being pretty good to begin with! I love your observatory and thought about getting one here, but I am afraid of my super high humidity that everything would be covered with mildew. Let's see, 2012 ... you were just graduating from high school, right? Ha. That 2012 CCD OSC looked like a beast!
@AZ4Runner
@AZ4Runner 12 дней назад
Ha, I ain't that young Pat.. I'm thinking of getting out the CCD and running it now that I have a better understanding of calibration frames and more post processing know how.

Great job Jason. Well it may have been 12 years before you got back to image it again but that's faster than me...... I haven't imaged M104 at all! Better get my act together

Run that through the Meade and you should have reach to get it for sure. it is probably pretty high for you southern boyz as well. CS

Lovely image mate I remember shooting this in 2015 with my 10" newtonian & modified DSLR at a star party in 2015 but it were pretty low down so after 3 subs I moved on to the needle galaxy but I did process the image anyway. Maybe I'll get back to it someday, clear skies!!!

Thanks Tich! I think shot the needle back then too. gonna have to go back and look at more old notes! CS

Nice work Jason at least you’ve had clear skies , uk 🇬🇧 skies have been terrible for months now with maybe the very odd clear night, I’ve managed 2 nights in 4 months

Thanks Boaty, I feel your pain for sure. it is going to start getting real hot here and I'm probably going to bring the equipment in soon. 115 F in the shade is torture on astrogear. CS

Do it in 3 minutes see what it on like
@AZ4Runner

I think if I tried 3 minutes I might get to much Light Pollution from my backyard now, I was able to do much longer exposures back in 2012 for sure. I think my backyard was B3/4. but alas that time has gone.
