Revisiting the Leonardo McDonnell Douglas MD-82 in Microsoft Flight Simulator after a long time away

Following a number of updates recently, today I climbed back into the MD-82 "Mad-Dog" in Microsoft Flight Simulator and attempted to remind myself how it works. I kind of love that it's much more "hands on" than the modern airliners, and requires a fair amount of knowledge and practice to get procedures down, and to respond appropriately to situations that may arise.
Here's where you can find the checklist:

I always enjoyed and appreciate your videos and learn from them. To me the Maddog was from the very beginning in FSX several years ago along with PMDG been the ultimate hands on “study level” aircraft. It has always required a lot of reading and studying to fly it as it was designed. From what I learned it very close to the real thing. It has been one of my top favorites for several years. Very glad we have it again.

I like it but am not sure of radios etc. I think there is a sound enhancement in SimMarket as it is fairly quiet. Really enjoyed the video, great landing. I'll do well starting it up. lol. Slainte, JB

You've done well Jon ! I love this one, because it's so different and complex...so hard to learn and master, good value for the money, though
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett Год назад
Yep - it's difficult enough that you need to practice it, and know it - unlike the modern airliners, where having half-a-clue gets you a long way :)

What a long body this airliner has. The wings are towards the back and the engines in the rear. You wonder how it actually flies but I'm not an engineer. Interesting and complex cockpit. Very entertaining and informative video. Thanks.

Not an engineer either but, engines are heavy-so when they are mounted at the rear, the wing has to move aft to keep the center of lift balanced correctly against the center of gravity. It’s what makes the long MD-80s, ERJ-145 and other similar planes look so cool!

Unlike real life pilots, we simmers go from aircraft to aircraft , thinking that we can maintain the degree of flying competence to make the flight uneventful. That's pretty much an impossible task. Then again, simming is about dreaming of flight without the cost and risk of the real thing.
@jonbeckett

And we get to go from plane to plane :) Real pilots, not so much :)

Hi Jonathon, Thanks for another interesting video. I noticed that on the ILS chart its showing a 2.5 degree course offset which is probably why it didn't look right. A good hands-on approach well executed though.

Yes - I looked at the chart afterwards and noticed :)

Just watching this back, interesting to see I completely missed engaging the auto-pilot. That says volumes about saturating yourself with workload in an unfamiliar aircraft, and the effects of doing so.

I think I've come up with some merch T-Shirts for you: 👕 JB does MD "Looks, It's Doing It!", "Forgot the Landing Lights Again!" x 3 "I Want to See the Green Banana" "Get your Slats Out" Lovely & enjoyable as always - the MadDog loves it alarms doesn't it! 😜

Oh, the MD-80 family are all a bit odd. There is a fantastic youtube video with a real MD-82 pilot showing you around the cockpit.

This is a handful for sure, isn't funny how we have sitting our most expensive airplane in msfs collecting dust? I myself am guilty as well of not flying this aircraft enough

I need to practice with it more - it's amazing how quickly the muscle memory and procedures vanish from your head.

Jonathan I apologize for this type of question but I don't have access to my PC at the moment to see the specs but by chance do you know the range distance for this aircraft? I tried to make my flight plan from KIND KLAX in simbrief and right away got a red notification that the flight plan was out of range for this aircraft, I can swear that I did That flight before but I'm not 100% sure though, I'm I choosing the wrong aircraft type profile in Simbrief (md82) ? or maybe the CI parameters?

The stats in the menu say about 2300nm - I think it's capable of a LOT further though.

Well... it pre-dates a lot of the modern aircraft - they were still figuring it all out.

@@jonbeckett Makes sense. The plane has a number of quirks like the whisky compass; it's behind the pilots and viewed with a mirror on the glare shield...
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett Год назад
@@pilotboy2612 Yep - I know all about the compass - which isn't modelled in the Leonardo - but I guess you can't have everything :)

Greetings I have purchased and downloaded the latest MD80 by Leonardo. When I bring up the load manager it only shows the basic Maddog, nothing in MSFS2020. It keeps saying "waiting for Simulator" I did purchase the MD83 and 88. Idk how to activate it. My registration keys says incomplete when I enter it, also copied and pasted it with no luck. Any help would be great.
