Wow this was a great tutorial. I walked thru the video and modeled the unistrut support. Great step-by-step narrative. The video packed a lot of info in one Revit family session. • Line Based Family • Nested 3D Family • Parametric Constraints • Work-planes • Parametric Formula/Constraints • Object Styles • Detail Level/Visibility I walked away with a wealth of tips for family modeling. Thanks for sharing!

Haha glad to have helped, even if it gave some extra work! Depending on your discipline it may be worth considering the same methodology, but using structural framing instead of a line based generic model. This would enable you to analytically assess the elements as well, or include them in a structural takeoff.

@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 3 года назад
Getting to the sill is a solid effort! I'm hoping to start building courses in July, still a few products to work on in my content store. Dynamo first, families after. Ideally they will be out before end of this year. Anyone who has been following my dates will know this has been sliding quite a lot - lots of things competing with this, but I am reducing my consulting workload progressively to make room for it.

Awesome video, gonna be recommending this channel a lot!!! There is one thing that I really did not understand. What is the difference between the references. What differs a weak reference plane, from a no reference, and a top reference?
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 3 года назад
Named reference planes can be useful for when you switch between families - these help Revit maintain dimensions if objects are swapped. For example a 'Left' plane can be used if both families have one and it is dimensioned. I explain them in a bit more depth in this video if it helps: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SMSaApGPVhI.html

Dear Guru Thank you for your great videos on RU-vid I have one question about one of them in this video, you didn't create a hole ( void form) in the support it helps the profile be more realistic I create a profile with voids ( holes) but when the length changes the void interfere to each other I'' really appreciate you making a video about this issue thank you, sir
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru Год назад
Generally the voids at this scale would be onerous level of detail and as you also found revit doesnt do void profile arrays very well unfortunately. A face based void array family would be the only way but it uses a lot of memory so i would not recommend it.

Great video. Is it possible to make the hanger to snap onto duct and adopt duct width and under side of duct as reference plan? fixing length might be different because the concrete slab varies in thickness. Thanks.
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 3 года назад
I would try building a duct fitting if you want it to be sized to the duct. My workflow accounts for slab thickness as it finds the underside at each hanger.
@User-tx5qz
@User-tx5qz 3 года назад

Great stuff as always Gavin. I have a question regarding nested components, is it possible to schedule them as part of the overall family (like what you said @26:46)? let's say you wanted to include the unistrut family into another family say, a tv bracket. When I try to do this I get the unistrut and the bracket on separate lines. this makes sense if I use the OOTB manufacturer parameter for both. but even when I create a shared parameter for the unistrut manufacturer it doesn't seem to recognize them as the same family. What am I doing wrong? I just don't know what I am missing.
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 4 года назад
Nested families that are 'shared' will always report as separate entities in schedules - each line represents an object. Typically, I'd use filters in a schedule to exclude nested components (by a field they have in common, like an additional visibility parameter like 'IsComponent' if all you want to capture is the host element itself. Capturing a component as granular as Unistrut might be quite macro in approach, it depends on your trade and intent (e.g. a contractor probably cares more about the item, whilst a component fabricator cares more about their respective piece such as the total length of Unistrut, and the lengths by which they need to cut).

How about adding a parameter to space every 54" on a duct?? Good job man,
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 3 года назад
Yes you could set it up differently to achieve such a rule. The point of the script you'd need to adjust is the spacing/division code block. Instead of finding max segments and equally dividing, you could find max fit and build a range between 0 and the upper range of this amount (spacing * max segments -1) and this would give equally spaced to the last required segment.

This is so handy. Is it hard to add in a parameter to add a 2nd or 3rd unistrut and offset that. Also could this be added to some sort of dynamo script to place bracketing for all elements in a project?
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru Год назад
Potentially, it all comes down to the ingenuity and time of the scripter! If you add extra variables its more conditions to measure, e.g. identifying stacked runs is hard to do unless you systemize them together.

Awesome video, excellent commentary, thank you for this beautiful video. My question is, Is it possible to make the rods automatically touch the floor above regardless of channel height?
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 4 года назад
You could use a face hosted family instead, but the channel height wouldn't be set relative to the level below. The best workflow would probably be using Dynamo to detect the height of linked model floor/beam above. Feel free to check out this video on my channel to see how: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-szZF-N7R27k.html Thanks for the kind words!

Hi, is there any solution for the Revit Family created in Italian Language, to be converted into English? I'm using Revit english but when i open the Family, the parameters and properties are on Italian language. Can anyone help me out on there? Thanks in advance.
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 2 года назад
As far as I am aware this is not possible for parameter names, as the user names these and revit doesnt have a translation tool built in. It only translates inbuilt things like commanss and tooltips which are hard built into the language pack. If firms need to have content in a language, typically it must be made in that language from the start.
