Roland GK3 equipped Steinberger Spirit circa 2001. Explorations into MIDI SYNTH Guitars.
MIDI guitars can be quite powerful once connected to a computer running through modern software instruments and reverb algorithms. I picked up this entire rig: The Spirit, Case, Guitar stand, Strap, Roland GR-20, and Synth case for one price on Reverb. A total bargain and hours of fun.

a midi guitar is now officially on my list of things to build! been thinking about one for years, but you've sold me now. I have more VSTs than I can number and being able to play them using guitar would be awesome. Thanks as always for for posting something unusual and engaging

great vid about an interesting guitar! im really looking forward to the next build! im wanting to build a semi-hollow do-it-all carbon fiber headless guitar, with a ghost piezo midi kit (and possibly seymour duncan p-rails) at some point. i see so many companies pushing boundaries with composite materials, powerful pickup systems, and ergonomic designs. but ive yet to see someone bring them together to make a truly amazing electric guitar. Emerald guitars comes closest, but their focus on acoustic designs feels a little like a limitation on ergonomics. something like the strandberg salen in composite materials would be awesome. anyway, have a good one!

So a midi guitar is simply converting the six strings into six configurable inputs into a synth based piece of software.... thank you Mark, you have explained that better then anyone I have ever seen!!! 😀

I've got one of the newer Gibson-made Steinberger Spirit GT Pro Deluxe guitars in metallic blue finish, it has what appears to me to be a glued-in neck with a manufactured-wood fretboard on it.

This Steinberger is similar. All wood, Gibson era.

Wonderful find...the guitar and gk3. I had a GK1 and GR-50??? I think that's what it was.

I had the boring rectangular body version of this guitar 15 years ago but didn't hold onto it. Yours is a more pleasing aesthetic, and the midi is just so cool

I always hated the back of the guitar body- to me it looked like a saggy gluteus Maximus, that being said these guitars paved the way for your modern headless strandberg, ormsby, skarveson etc. Steinberg was ahead of the curve

LOL! Saggy bottom. Steinberger was definitely ahead of the curve which is one reason why I'm exploring the past. It's my opinion that we have reached peak "Strandberg" in terms of body shape design. Many modern headless guitars are now just derivatives of the stranding body shape. I'm not even going to bother to try to design a unique shape. My next build will directly steal the Steinberger body shape. Also the patents expired for all the Steinberger stuff. So even designing a similar style bridge is wide open.

@@MarkGutierrez I’m looking forward to that video my friend- I watched avanc and it is astounding what you created there! I love boutique builds like that- they push the envelope

@@MarkGutierrez I agree! Strandbergs have really sexy body but I think the headpiece area doesn't fit the design of the body well. I'm planing a modernised Steinberger paddle shape with piezos under the saddles, similar to the Apparatus Alcobb guitar. BTW, It turns out that making 13 pin output on individual piezo saddles is not that difficult. Just a few transducers, passives and some opamps as buffers mainly. Big thumbs up for your next project! I think more luthiers should explore piezo only guitars!

@@NikiDorian I just recently saw the Apparatus Alcobb about a week ago online. It is a beautiful guitar. Dreamy. Never thought about building my own piezo system. I'll have to look into it. thanks!
