Commissioned in 2012 on the Joban Line in Greater Tokyo, 19 ten-car electric multiple units make up the Express E 657 limited series operated by the Eastern Japan Railway Company, JR EAST, although derived from the e259 series, the similarity seems impossible at first glance. . Built between 2011 and 2019, the hitachi, j-trec, kinki sharyo E 657 series replace the E 651 and E 653 series from the same manufacturers. The E 657 series is featured on all Hitachi and Tokiwa express services between Shinagawa and Sendai on the Tōkaidō, Ueno, Tokyo, Jōban and Tohoku (shinagawa - iwaki) and Tokiwa (shinagawa - katsuta) lines to and from their destinations. in Sendai, they operate the entire Joban line. Trains also run between Shinagawa and Ueno after the opening of the ueno-tokyo line. They were supposed to run between Ueno and Iwaki, but some Hitachi services serve Sendai after the Joban Line was rebuilt.
