I wont take closed lumber yards for an answer and I'm off in search for timber to keep my project on track. We find some oak in the hills and harvest some lumber for knees.
Also: I apologise for the miss synced audio at 6 mins, youTube took issue with the music I had initially put in!
Many thanks for continuing to watch and support the project!

This just keeps getting better. Just as good as all the other Wooden Boats being done. We all know which boats I’m talking about.

If you don't seal up end grain you get lots of checking. Simple method is to cover a fresh cut with wood glue

That tree is a score! Nice to use local wood that’s fallen on it own and not cut down. Shows respect!

Being particular about the wood is smart. I’m sure you will get the wood you need, patience.

Looking good. You probably know, but just in case... It's a good idea to slow down the drying a bit by sealing the end grain, traditional is wax (at least in Germany), PVA glue works well, but any old paint rest will do the job. Also let it stay outside, open and stacked so the wind can blow through but covered up from the rain. Look forward to your next video...

I find that for me, seeking, identifying and harvesting the raw material is extremely rewarding. Sometimes it's a bit if work that doesn't pan out, but that makes the successes more delightful.

The only way I know to distinguish between white and red is the pores when viewed from the end grain. Red oak is open and white has tyloses (little flecks) in the pores and appears clogged.
@BothanboatsIdler
@BothanboatsIdler 3 года назад
There is also a visual difference in the grain but its not particularly safe to base your judgment on! Using a saucer of water and an off cut or the “acid” test are. “Belt and braces” approach’s for when it really matters - such as in a frame. 🤙🏻

It's got to be very difficult to purchase or obtain the natural healthy oak from your neck of the woods for your frames, knees , ribs and plank sides.That must be a very real challenge but do -able. I guess research and planning makes it possible.Interesting.Does Wales have a good supply of oak and southern England( New forrest area, Southampton) ? Curious....
@BothanboatsIdler
@BothanboatsIdler 3 года назад
There is a particular shortage if all materials at the moment, (thanks brexit and covid) but oak is proving to be the most difficult by far. Scottish oak can be astonishingly beautiful stuff, but for boats it is not so great as its usually very pipped/gnarled and generally weather beaten. But you can get some good stuff. I cant really comment on Welsh wood im afraid, ive never tried to buy form down that “neck of the woods’ before 🤣

Thank you for sharing the video and your knowledge of the timber. I am planning on building a boat, and I've done some research on different types of wood, but have gotten some information that contradicts itself. I would like to know what your opinion is on using these woods that I have on my property. Live oak? Red cedar? Red oak? Elm? Thanks again, can't wait to see more work on your vessel.

Hi, thanks for watching and congratulations on making a fantastic life choice; Building your own boat. There are a lot of varied specie of trees in different regions and some if them look very similar to each other. Some have contradicting property’s; one of the most widely known is to white and red oak. White has closed capillaries and so water cannot penetrate through the end grain. Red however is so open it is much like a collection of straws: this results in the wood rotting from the inside out. So it is worth trying to find out exactly what species you have in your property and read up on it. There is plenty of info online once you have the latin name sussed out. But as a general, Rule of thumb you have good wood there. Live oak is wonderful by all accounts but you don’t get it over here so i dont have any experience working with it. Its heavy and very strong and doesn’t move much with moisture changes. Ideal for the back bone (keel, frames, deck beams etc) Elm is also a great choice for the backbone. It was used by the romans as water pipes as it is fantastically rot resistant. Nice to work with and beautiful when oiled. Its been used as a boat building wood in Europe since prehistory! Red oak, is unsuitable for any boat building application except cosmetic. It will get wet and it will rot early. Red cedar: ive only used this in Skin on frame kayaks and found it a very nice easy to work wood. Ive heard it is good for planking and decking. Again though we dont readily get that over here. I hope thats of some use, but sounds like you have good lumber there. Good luck and enjoy!

@@BothanboatsIdler Thank you very much for taking the time to answering my questions. I'm really enjoying the rebuild that you have going. The fact that you are not only constructing you are also sharing your knowledge which is of great a benefit to so many, I'm sure. As far as your boat is concerned, would it be a problem to knock out the caulking from the inside of your boat versus pulling it out from the outside, I'm just curious if that would damage the planks? And after making all the repairs, will you be sanding everything? I think it's an awesome looking boat, and Im really enjoying every part of the process. I say thank you again because I'm getting so much out of watching your videos. Looking forward to the next, which I'll be watching tomorrow. Joe

Thank you so much, thats very kind of you! As she dries out that is becoming possible. But there are still some seams that are too tight to do this. Eg: the planks are beveled on their edges to accept the caulking. But butted up close. This results in an “open” seam on the outside of the boat. But the planking touching on the inside. This means that normally you cant push anything from the inside to the outside. So you must “hook” it from the outside. But as i say, as the planks dry out i can (and have) push from the inside when appropriate. I have a few planks to replace and lots of repairs. So she will likely be planed or scraped and then sanded fair before primer coat. I hope that helps? What type of boat are you planing to build? Cheers, Nick

@@BothanboatsIdler Yes, it makes a lot of sense. Thank you. I have a few more questions, but as I understand it, filming and editing the videos takes a considerable amount of time, so if I have a question I'll go back a few videos to see if I missed the answer. God bless you Nick. Joe

Are you able to harvest lumber from common land or do you pay private landowners? AFAIK, every scrap of land & the trees thereon belong to someone in England & most of the trees are left to fall & rot.
@BothanboatsIdler
@BothanboatsIdler 3 года назад
Its much the same here, and i obtained permission from the land owner before breaking out the saws. In this case the tree would have been (will be) “tidied” up for fire wood had i not stumbled across it! 👌🏻
