In this captivating video, join me as I embark on an exciting restoration journey with a first generation TOMY KiKuZo toy robot! Witness the transformation as I breathe new life into this classic robot by utilizing parts salvaged from a broken TOMY VerBot.
In my quest for perfection, I experimented with retrobriting the blue part of the arms, and you won't believe the difference it made. I'll share my process and results, providing valuable insights for fellow enthusiasts and collectors.
One fascinating aspect of the first generation VerBots and KiKuZos is their unique power requirement. Unlike their later counterparts, these robots require an extra nine-volt battery, for reasons I still don't know.
Join me on this nostalgic journey of restoration, innovation, and a dash of retro charm. Get ready to witness the rebirth of a timeless toy robot as we delve into the intricate world of TOMY KiKuZo and VerBot refurbishment!
Don't forget to hit that like button, subscribe to my channel, and stay tuned for more captivating content. Let's rediscover the magic of retro robots together!

Never seen one follow every command like it did in this video. It actually work as it’s supposed to work.

Not too bad... I think this one works better than later versions.

Such a cool robot and fantastic restoration! Loving the end credits where you apologise to the robot for mixing up left and right commands. 😊

Great restoration and I've never seen this overseas version of Verbot. Thanks for showing it, nice work as usual restoring it! I still have my Verbot from 1985 as a small kid. I keep it as a really like the design of it, even though years ago, it stopped working with the remote control and the voice activation. The batteries required were just too many. Today's smaller toy robots might manage without needing so many batteries, or use rechargeable batteries.

Better than Saturday morning cartoons! Thank You Randi.

My guess on the metal box is RF processing/shielding for the remote.

That seems to be the consensus.

Have you ever designed and built your own robot or game from scratch?

Non of them retain the memory when turned off. You have to reprogram them every time you turn them ON.

I used to have one of these robots as a kid in the mid 80s. It had the 9 volt battery and definitely didn't retain the memory when it was switched off. IIRC it even said that in the manual. One of the reasons I stopped playing with it was it was such a chore to reprogram. Also the alkaline batteries it needed were expensive and it didn't work too well with the rechargable batteries of the time. Mine also had that metal box inside - I would guess it's powered from the 9 volt battery and is a filter/signal booster for the remote to reduce interference from VHF TV and radio? If it was it didn't really work as although the manual said the remote had a 10 foot range I usually had to be standing practically next to the robot for it to work.

I don't know where I got that. Maybe it was a fever dream.

Eight batteries... Parents had to hate that back in the day.

I like how it talks it reminds me of a bird, I don't know the name but it just kinda chirps and clicks all the time. Do you have them where you live?
@RandiRain
@RandiRain Год назад
Clicks? Hmmm... We have mockingbirds. They make all kinds of crazy sounds. They can chirp original patterns over and over for hours and never repeat themselves.

Does it have to be those commands? I'd imagine it would be fun to use: - Get straight - Go forward - Move ahead - Try to detect it - It's not to late to - Whip it - Whip it good That's what is reminded me of anyway 😅
@RandiRain
@RandiRain Год назад
It does not have to be those commands. It just needs to be distinct commands from one another. As for the Devo joke, I used it in the last VerBot video I did.

I did not know that... It is a good idea. They should partner with Smooth-On and sponsor me.

The circuit in the metal box kinda sorta looks like a DC-to-DC converter to get a higher voltage for some particular component that needs more than battery voltage. Where do the output wires lead?
@RandiRain
@RandiRain Год назад
I thought maybe something like that too, but the wire for the antenna confuses me. The power from the batteries are going into the control pad on front, to the switch. From there, one line comes out going to the metal box. Out of the metal box is the antenna and power going to the main circuit... And that's it.
@aaronbrandenburg2441

Yeah I'm singing dc-to-dc boost converter as well. If one or War diodes were present this important this as well. Also present was mentioned so what goes models of this also had the 9-volt battery as well perhaps this might beat a boost circuit to compensate for the lack of the novel battery if it's needed in not just memory for the circuitry the other thing is kind of weird that they would have such a high voltage for memory backup but then again partially maybe this is due to more runtime without excessive weight of batteries since would replace at least six double a batteries is more packaging lighter weight size me a bit of determining Factor as well but potentially wait as as well. Also of note that looks almost like it's an audio input or output Transformer don't know if this is anything going on with audio were not on this end or perhaps it's just being used as a couple in Transformer possibly on one part of the RF circuitry but it's just a guess at that point would really need to see a schematic to know for sure what's going on

I so look forward to your Saturday morning videos. Is the brittle plastic from age or the retro brite or both?
@RandiRain
@RandiRain Год назад
It's the age or the UV damage. They're brittle before the retrobriting.
