Awesome vlogs! Im a relatively new subscriber, a 1980 Vanagon Westi owner that i bought new and drive almost daily. I have done my share of rust repair, but never had her off the road for more than a week or so. I have plenty more to do, and watching your videos is inspiring. I did check out heritage they seem to have a good supply of body metal. its a lot easer than fabing it myself. Ive been doing all the window chanels, the windshield was the biggest challenge and i fabed it all myself, side windows are done, next is the rear hatch and sliding door, then ill move on to other stuff. But what i like most is driving it, going camping in the mountains as well as local driving along the beaches here in LI. But even better is the memories i have of my kids growing up in it, those are priceless . Thanks for all your time and effort in bringing the content to us all...

That bus is lucky to have found you! Many people won't invest that much labor and the costs to save it from all that salt cancer. I restored a rusty convertible bug 25 years ago. Basically, I replaced the lower 12" of the body, I installed new pans, lots of work to the pan itself. Lot of rolls of mig wire, lots of grinding but I finished it and I still have it today. I should have scrapped it! lol. The next bug I bought spent its life in S. California. I wanted zero rust. I'd already bought that ground! HA! It was much faster and cheaper to restore that bug obviously. Lots of people ship dry, rust free VW's from the SW USA to the rust belt so they don't have to do what you're doing such a good at fixing. Keep up the good work.

Sometimes I wish I had bought a dryer bus, but there is something satisfying about knowing you’ve gone through every inch of a vehicle and restored it back to stock quality!

@@Vangabonders I totally agree with you. There's nothing like knowing you know every square inch of your VW. Plus, the skills you're developing will last a lifetime.

I love your channel, I'm working on restoring a 67 bug with my son and am inspired to improve my mig welding by watching your work. One thing I just bought was a bag of metal discs to weld holes with. Assorted sizes were about $35 and saves tons of time on making your own. Also, Eastwood makes a kit that includes assorted discs and step drill that matches the sizes.

I have to say, if you didn't want it to come out as near perfect as you can get it, what would be the use of doing it at all than. I like how you fit and weld the replacement panels on. And you know that everything has been taken care of before you weld anything. I think it not only will look great, but you will certainly be proud of it when it is finished too! And should be...
@steelyerface21

great work, is the outside flange of the battery tray usually tacked to the corner skin or did they just seam seal that at the factory and rely on the front and inside lips that are spot welded ?

Gettin’ ‘er done. I’m wondering if you are gonna handle the paint job yourself? Seems like a challenge. I think you could do it if you are ok with imperfections. Not sure how many cars you have painted but it seems like you are okay with getting the job instead of having perfection. I think the paint will look good enough to drive and be DIY good.

Cut your new panel a little longer than mark a line and cut through both panels together. And than you have a perfect butt weld.
