The term "Filipiniana" describes traditional dress from the culture of the Philippines. Its two main elements, the men's "barong" and the women's "terno," are, respectively, the shirt and dress that form the signature look of Filipiniana fashion.
The costume came to be associated with Ferdinand Marcos and his dictatorship in the Philippines from 1972-81 - this was the customary fashion of the family. And with the end of the regime came the fall of barongs and ternos from popular culture.
Caroline Mangosing is the creative director of Vinta Gallery, and the clothing she designs in her hometown of Manila has everything to do with traditional dress. She's trying to bring ternos and their butterfly sleeves, and barongs with their hand embroidery, back into the mainstream. It's not the easiest thing to do, as Mangosing acknowledges that Filipiniana "became uncool." But with her new take on historical dress and Vinta's ability to bring tradition to new clients in Canada and the Philippines, Mangosing is making a move to honour her culture.
"What I'm trying to do is continue the craftsmanship of the hand embroidery and hand weaving and make it available to the rest of the world," she says. "I love that I was able to find a nice little niche in fashion. I feel like that's part of my family legacy."
In this video shot in Manila, you'll meet Mangosing as she shops for materials at the Divisoria Market and works with her embroiderers in the studio on butterfly sleeves, pineapple fabric and tiny tiny stitches.

Never in my Filipino life have I ever heard that the Marcoses tarnished the Filipiniana/traditional Filipino costumes! Why politicize Filipino clothing? The real reason really was the Americanization of the Filipino people... anything American became cool in the 80s. MTV started and everyone seem to copy how Madonna dressed or who ever they see on TV!

I understand you’re against the Marcoses, but politicizing a traditional culture, or Filipino costume is way out of place. What does politics have anything to do with who the Filipinos are? It’s the media’s fault really... the rise of MTV and other American culture spread all over the world and people started following Madonna, for example. Even in the eighties, Filipino people weren’t dressed in traditional mestiza/zo clothing.SMH

i'm not sure it stopped being fashionable after 1986. most weddings i've seen from then until the late 90s had the groom and groomsmen wearing barong... or maybe because i'm provincial. but as for the terno, i do see the point.

Who told you that Filipino stop wearing barong tagalog because of Pres. Marcos, as you've said it is tarnished by his administration. Do not politicized the Filipino Barong with your belief in politics because you do not now the truth behind the proclamation of Martial Law. You were only echoing what others perceive to believe on what really happens on that period of Philippine History.

I never in my life heard that it was because of Marcos that the wearing of traditional Filipino clothing became unpopular until this video. Please don’t spread lies like this just to promote your product. Instead, try to encourage the elite and famous to wear these clothes more often in the hope it will be more “in” again.

I think 'baro' is actually the right term and not 'barong'. Barong Tagalog can also be called Baro na Tagalog.

Please also study the Philippines in the 1960’s. You’ll be surprised whoever was responsible for the title and video content should look into the real story of Martial Law. Because the Marcos was tarnished by 🇵🇭 media and the Aquinos who wanted the country for their own capital interest. The whole country collapsed from there since they took seat. That’s the sad part when Filipinos had associated the Barong with that of Marcos’ legacy. When in fact, they promoted internationally and prospered the country. All the other 1st world countries were disdainful. As if Filipinos shouldn’t have finer things in life and be intelligent. The Aquinos were puppets of US govt. in their Neo-colonialism. Who wanted the country continue to depend on US economically. But Marcos wanted the country to be self sufficient. And they were becoming it! American govt. did not like that momentum the country were having. Imagine! There was no homeless people in Manila during his seat and literacy in country was 98%. More than any other SOuth East Asian country. Ask your grand parents the real story! Barong is Lyfe! So Let’s re invent and revivify the National custom wear!

This is just a way to advertise her business... Marcos DID kill his people and ignored poverty, but the national attire? Seriously? You have to insert an infamous person just so you could advertise your damn business when you could do it through posters and online promotion... That is like saying that Pol Pot ruined specific clothing and now people 'hated' wearing green polos. Besides, I have never heard anyone saying "I don't want to wear this because it reminds me of a dictator 😖"

Stupid video. Sisihin nyo ang mga aquino at wag si marcos dahil sya pa ang gumawa na maging mandatory ang barong na gawing uniform. "Following Marcos' decree, barong tagalog became widely mandated as office wear for both employees of the government and private companies, as well as school uniforms. In the 1970s to the 1980s, companies like the Philippine Airlines, Ayala Corporation, and the Allied Bank were prescribing barong tagalog as their uniforms. Various semi-formal and informal versions of the barong tagalog developed during this period, including the short-sleeved polo barong and the linen barong.[10] In 1998, Supreme Court Justice Hilario Davide, Jr. mandated the wearing of barong tagalog for all employees of the Judiciary of the Philippines.[19]" -wikipedia

Ugly designs. How can this be a family tradition? The original ethnic designs are elegant, medyo na diminish ang elegance when made into a casual modern. Just my two cents :)
