I always think about how much trial and error and passing on of information it took over the centuries for this craft to survive and thrive . I can't think of it's like unless you get into things like chemistry . I mean with wood or stone you change what is there , but with steel or iron you have to first create the material , then change it . Really fun to watch
A nice 18th century Tomahawk, and good instruction on making it too. My Great Grandfather was an old time Blacksmith and that man had skill that is hard to find nowadays, but he would have loved to talk to you, I'd wager. Talking shop, so to say, as he was a blacksmith in a time when there were steam powered equipment but it was equipment for rich farmers, He made implements for dirt poor Farmers, Farmers who worked themselves to death to feed their families, and he was at the center of his community because he was the one who could fix what they had broken or make new what they needed and didn't charge excessive money for his work. He was a good man, kind and thoughtful. He even made a beautiful wrought Iron snow sled for my Mother when she was a little girl. and she used that thing with her and her younger siblings until they outgrew it, and it never broke or fell apart. I wish I knew him better than I did before he passed, but what I did know, he was a kind and honest man. I have a great deal of respect for Blacksmiths, it takes a certain kind of pedigree to be one, and if it was such an obsolete profession nowadays I would have likely become one too, but there just wasn't a market for being one at the time of my growing up. Now, as we nearly hit the end of the first quarter of the 21st century we seem to have more respect for the old ways, and there is now a market for blacksmithed tools and items once again, but it's now marketed to the whole world, via the internet. Thanks for sharing your skill and knowledge, I look forward to watching more of your videos! Keep yourself healthy my friend, your skill is precious and your wisdom should be shared, especially with today's youth.
I really enjoyed this Mike. I've got a lot to learn so I really appreciate all of the tips and would love to be able to make my own hawk for Tomahawk Tuesday. Catch ya on the next one brother!
Hey nice job on the hawk brother!!! I tell you i really like your forge set up. I have future plans to set up a permanent coal forge, but for the moment i am using a propane forge. Take care Mike and be blessed!
