Revolver (2005) EXPLAINED - Breakdown & Heavy Analysis 

Sorter rejecting his ego and choosing to obey his moral conscience is one of the most satisfying parts of this film.

It is worth noting that the scene where the ego is revealed as the enemy is in a scene where they play golf instead of chess, golf being a game where you only have yourself to blame for failure. You are competing, but your opponent is competing against himself just as you are. An obvious reference to how the fight with your own ego is a fight with yourself, even when other "enemies" are involved.

A lot of the movie is about different characters representing different traits of the self. Example: Zach is Intuition, Avi is Intelligence. Won't try to spoil it completely, but if you start thinking like this a lot of the characters suddenly make sense. Another detail, the name Jake Green. Green is exactly in the middle of the visible spectrum, it represents our own identity, it's neutral, in the middle. You need all of your experiences, ego, intuition, intelligence, memory, etc, to define you as someone different from everyone else. But deep down you're (as everyone else) neutral. It's an amazing movie with a lot to give. Seen it many times and it gives something new every single time. Most underated movie of all time in my opinion.

I think the car scene represents the end of our lives. Normally people don't realise that they have lived their lives wrongly (trying to please other people, focussing only on money or status etc) until the moment they realise they are going to die. At that moment they realise that they have been living a lie and if they had a second chance, they would ask "why". This is why people that come close to death sometimes make big changes to their lives.

This film ( Uk version) is one of my favourites. I watch it, at least, once a year. The elevator scene is pure genius from Guy Ritchie AND from Jason. To me this was by far the best acting from Jason Staham. Sadly this masterpiece was a flop simply because most people just don't want to think and entertain some concepts that gets them in some harsh places where they must confront themselves. They rather have everything just dumbed down and given to them. Interesting analysis, good job!

I think the lack of success this film had, shows that most people don't really think. They just like visual stimulation, explosions, tits, comedy or something that makes you cry.

The sentence that challenged me the most was..."we did this because we are you". Now that I watched your analysis I felt the need to re-think the scean again. First I should start with the concept that are introduced in that scene (chess game at the end). The ego will defend itself when you try to help someone to get rid of it (…"if you try to destroy him to safe them they will destroy you to safe him") so there is no chance to destroy it (the ego) from the outside/external. So you (the real you) can only destroy your own ego (from inside) a fact which is probably known by Zack & Avi because they did it already. So they became him (Jake) at the point when they thought he was ready for the game but would not start it by himself. In jail he wasn't ready because the only thing he could think of was the revenge on Macha (thats confirmed by his actions after he got out of jail). He stole money from Macha with the "help" of 3 Eddies and then he had his direct revenge in the beginning scene where he won against Macha by betting on the color of a chip. Thats the point when Z & A thought that Jake is ready (because there is less defense from the ego know) an when they "set him on the path to death" to build an even stronger motivation to play the fight/gam against his Ego (which he [his ego] would have dropped immediately if there was th chance to do so) because they knew it would be hard to crack. During the rest of the film they constructed experiences for him where he could personally experience his EGO and the pain it produces, to get him to the point of total awareness of the ego/ self - realization . So they did (produced) for him what he couldn't do for him self (for example: give his money away ) to win the game against his ego -> they became him and took control of his life (one is normally doing by himself if the ego isn't in charge) to lead him to the point where he is almost free of ego (the end of the movie ), then they tell him that they are him so that he knows that he was controlled by them an still is ("...give him what he wants that will make him very happy"). But know that he has less ego he will know what to do and does no longer need the "guidance" from Z & A, a thing he should realize. He should take control of his life again and make good decisions (not ego-based) otherwise the EGO will come back. So they didn't do it because they liked him they did it because he could do it by himself. With saying "...we didn't do that because we like you" that they want to prevent him of believing that they did this out of kindeness and make him aware of the fact that he know has to take the control of his life again and continue fighting the ego (because its not over -> as he will mention in the elevator later) until its totally gone...that's my acutal explanation for "...we are you.". Might change while watching it again :-) Would be glad if someone can ad something or correct false assumptions or perceptions.

I saw this movie in 2017 it made me burst into tears from how beautiful it was, "Revolver" is the most spectacular and personal movie of all time.

"The more power you think you have in (E)GOld's world, the less power you have in the real world." This whole shot is one hell of a subconcious mind twister. Very well made. Also the name "Gold" can be torn apart as an emergence of words EGO and OLD. A way of saying that the Ego is the oldest and scariest enemy we have ever known, omnipotent, overpowered, yet, no one ever sees him. Writers of this are Luc Besson and Guy Richie, really clever fellowes.

The scene where Jake gets hit by the car is both a shocking mechanism to gain the viewers attention and a metaphor to what has happened to his pride. I clearly see this movie as trying to please two demographics as it runs a psychological thriller alongside an action gangster film that I personally enjoyed a lot. Jake's ego is a confident one. It trusts itself with devotion, constantly trying to prove himself how he's always right about everything. At this particular moment in the story, the character learns that he has been played with, conned and deceived with his medical results. This is one of the first steps towards breaking the ego: knowing that it's not infallible, it can make mistakes. That's why you get this shocking crash scene where he get's hit and flies through the windshield, as it evokes the sensation of been confronted with an inconvenient harsh truth.

When Jake is hit by the car, it is showing how everything we do is a step or a move in chess...how one wrong move can change the outcome of the game...timing is everything

The DVD Guy Ritchie commentary is amazing to listen to,if you like this movie you MUST find a copy with the commentary with it

i have watched this film 6 times now, each time i wat h it it teaches me something new. Also i feel the need to watch sometime in life because it reminds me to stay on track, otherwise my ego will rule over me. This is not a good thing because power makes you do uncontrolled things.

I have watched it so many times. And the scenes on the roof and in the elevator, the most. And like many of you, I always find something else to remind myself of. It's like: I have been blind and now I can see. Never underestimate the dark side of the Ego and its abilities to fog your mind and to justify something, that it doesn't fully agree with your consciousness. The scene on the rooftop is awesome, it is the awakening, the AHA moment. But the scene in the elevator is the most powerful one for me because now, he knew who he is and that who is talking in his head - is NOT him. The separation from the Ego! The real act of spiritual elevation and Universal awareness, because without the Ego telling you that you are a separate entity, one can now tune in the information field of everything that exists. Where time, space is of no importance. And you know everything at demand. Like having access to the most powerful data bank ever created. Oh yeah, I forgot. You cannot kill your Ego because is the shadow of YOU. To eliminate your reflection or shadow it means to eliminate Yourself. Or the light you are in. So what do you do? What can you do? You treat it as a pet. You give him some ridiculous name like Jasper or MiniMe. You never glorify it and you don't call 'him'. It is 'it'.It must know that is not in control. The Ego will try to wear you in the most critical situation as a puppet. It will come in, swishing through and you will fill your head being taken over in anger and rage. Remember when someone cut you off in traffic without indicating? That is what I am talking about. Just understand then, what is happening in your head. Be aware and tell 'It' he is not in charge.

I think Jake Green was in prison the whole time. He was actually testing the formula from his prison cell. He puts himself inside shooting some guy's leg on purpose so he can "change the rules of what controls him". He's isolating himself from the world that is destroying him. That's why he chooses solitary. All characters of the movie are part of the scenario he builds in his mind. Of course after all that's not that important because the mission of the movie is to prove the concept and this is done very well.

Guy Ritchie specializes in telling us about our own minds and how to get the command power over our mind. He continues this theme in his "King Arthur" movie.

I just saw this movie for the first time and I really agree that it is very good, very thoughtful and thought-provoking. I think that Avi and Zach are representations of the Superego, the conscience, the chess player, played by Andre 3000 and the ID, the primal urges and instincts, the con man, played by Vincent Pastore. The ego is played by the rage monster Jake in the elevator, and the voice over thoughts. Jake is just the person, and the three psychological phenomena have impacts on his behavior. His ego has hatred for Macha and this leads him on a self-destructive pathway. It is the reaction of the ego to external stimuli provided by Macha. Once he gets control of his ego, the hatred fades away, his fear of enclosed spaces fades away and Jake has his equanimity. Ego can be restructured. It's an analogy of how we as people react to external stimuli, based on how our ego is structured, and what guidance we receive from our Id and Superego. We are always in the prison of our own minds, and that is why Avi and Zach just evaporated from the prison. They weren't there in physical person, they were parts of his mind working itself out. I'm not sure who the unseen Mr Gold is, but I noticed that there is tons of gold and gold colored scenery in the movie. What is really good or bad in our lives is how we behave in response to external, and internal (such as illness), stimuli. If we always behave with equanimity, then we can have more progressive, more happy and successful lives, in terms of what is really Good. This is "The Good" in philosophical terms: The Good is happiness, love, friends, family, not really piles of money or beautiful things or having power over other people. I thought Jason Statham was great in this movie, but it was advertised as a Guy Ritchie movie with Jason Statham starring. He only took off his shirt once, except in that shower scene by himself. My wife was very appreciative of his musculature! He did not use his martial arts skills to kick a single ass in the movie. That is probably why it was not a huge box office success. I agree with Icebear that this was very good and will bear repeated watching, and will probably have a strong cult following.

The part where he gets hit by the car represents (to me at least) the realization that none of the things he valued before matter at death. He notices that if you saw the possibility of dying, you would change your approach.

Wish I could understand more what you are saying man, you are talking wayyy too fast, but as far as this movie goes... can’t say that I am the biggest a Guy Ritchie fan, but this movie was a masterpiece! It’s a shame that people just can’t delve into the true aspect and the meaning of the story. Ray Liotta was the true star of this movie. He made me laugh soo much. He’s so underrated as an actor. I had thought Chess was used exclusively because the king piece represents that "best friend" we try so hard to protect, but your explanation about the game's nature of pure logic rather than ego and emotions, just opened my eyes. The film just seems to open itself more as I rewatch it alongside analyses such as yours.

the only version of this movie i have seen is the 2hour one... and it has helped me alot with my mental heath problems... one part over all helps me... the Elevator... "the greatest con that he ever pulled... was makeing you believe that he is you..." the voices in my head... arent real... i am smart enough to know that but sometimes they do feel as real as i am....

This is one of my favorite movies, very underrated and alot of people ive shown it to just watch it like and movie and didn't walk away questioning everything like me. Really good review the only thing I think that was missed was avi says we were always goin to take you with us jake you just didn't know how hard that was going to be. I think jake green thought they ment break him out of prison,but what they really ment was break him free of his ego and bring him to reality with them. Also the being hit by the car seen the only thing I pulled away was the movie showing the power they have or free thought has idk. Just another example of the phone call stopping him from being hit. The card stop him from being shot. The card he ignored he fell down the stairs just showing they were playing the game with him. He was a pawn in the chess game and the game is bigger and bigger for every person. Somthing along those lines. Idk I'm not very smart and I usually not all about movies but I like this one. The very name "Revolver" could be a metaphor for the ego. The different chambers are the various aspects of Jake's ego/self. I like the "con-chess" theme. Could be two aspects of consciousness he dreamed up while in solitaire. Do they really exist? What a Jacob's Ladder... another of my favorite films.

Avi and Zack are not real they are part of Jake Green. Having been locked up in solidarity the loneliness drove him mad and to deal with his mind invented the chess master and the con man. In particular notice that Avi is black and a chess board has both white and black and generally as you play a game against yourself the opponent is black. The twist at the end is that previous games have led Jake to believe himself superior but instead of pieces being fed he was being fed games by Avi. Jakes says he would die for them and this is echoed in the chess game. I consider myself fortunate to have watched the English release. It is truly a work of Art.Layers upon layers of meaning.

This is #1 and fight club is #2 movie for me

A concept I am coming across in multiple sources is that fear and debt are the most powerful tools of empire. So it’s no coincidence that macha is so obsessed with fear and avi uses debt. Just throwing it out there!

The cell mate twist was way too obvious early in the film... other than that, an excellent work and biggest hidden gem in modern cinema

The movies that are written really clever and complex, and not just posing as clever, will always get low ratings at release but linger with people for years. I love those movies.

I think Jake getting hit by a car while he has sort of an epiphany-moment happens to showcase that many ppl never get into any of this until they experience some form of katastrophe and trauma and are then, essentially forced to deal with the issue they' ve been ignoring their entire life. Pretty common case. I am sure you all know examples or maybe even are one.

Love the film and like you a fan. The car crash scene represents the impact of realization, where Jake stops being an angry victim, instead, choosing to challenge the reasons for and the leading to his situation (he asks 'Why'). It's a spiritual kick to the head. With regards to the elevator scene this represents the many emotive states the ego uses to control our being; anger; paranoia, fear etc. etc. etc. Jake is simply taking control by realising this, so he's challenging the voice in his head and defeating his ego ignoring or going against it. (Having suffered broken ego bounderies myself many years ago, watching the film helped me come to terms with the battle I was raging with myself). Still a great film.

Thank you so much for your very elaborated explanation of the movie. While watching the shooting scene with Fred, I had to think about what Jake told earlier about winning during the chess game. "Sometimes, a little voice tells you to think about number one", which could also stand for rule number one (If you want to get smarter, you have to play a smarter opponent). Jake was clearly in a losing position here, so he "fed some bits" to Avi by pretending not to shoot Fred, like a clever chess move, which was rewarded by receiving the gun. This could have put him back in the driver's seat and by shooting Avi, it would have meant "check mate", but eventually it turned out that the gun was not loaded, so once again his opponent was smarter. Moving the persons/figures through the scene with the gun in his hand (trying to send Fred out of the room and threatening Avi "one more step") could also be interpreted with moving pieces confidentialy on a chess board when a player thinks he's in control, but don't quote me on that. --- Jake was hit by the car while gaining full recognition of a) his ego (there is something about yourself, something that you will deny even exists until it's too late to do anything about it), and b) after the doctor told him that he was fine that something terribly wrong was going on here; thinking deeply about self-expression and self-revelation in life (This is beacause you want people to know how good, attractive, generous [...] you are). This shows to me that thinking too hard about life can quickly put someone in a fatal situation. There's also this "life-is-a-bit**-thought" that resonates: In one moment you receive the good news that you're healthy, in the next moment you're dead. While your ego is your worst enemy, life and fate are also happening. Besides, I remarked and enjoyed the two references to music ("Blood, Sweat and Tears" and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"). Don't wanna go too far here but that monologue "Something About Yourself" and all the things our ego might cause inside of ourselves reminded me a lot to the passage in "Fight Club": (movie quote) "You are not your job. You are not how much money you have in the bank. You are not the car you drive. You are not the contents of your wallet. You're not your f****** khakis. You are the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world. but the quote from the book matches even better: "You are not how much money you have in the bank. You're not your job. You're not your family, and you're not who you tell yourself."....."You're not your name."...."You're not your problems."....."You're not your age."....."You are not your hopes."....."You will not be saved."....."We are all going to die someday."

Apparently the elevator scene is filled with Hindu symbolism and illustrates Kundalini awakening. The elevator represents the spine and the 33 floors each vertebrae. The Serpent sculpture outside of the elevator symbolises Kundalini energy which travels up the spine like a snake. Between the 12-14 floor is where the elevator (Kundalini energy gets stuck) this is also where the lumbar region becomes the thoracic Or Sacral Chakra meets the Solar Plexus, once that blockage is removed we defeat the ego and become enlightened. I think lol.

They go out of their way to show that Gold is the Ego... When his brother calls him & they start going over the conversation about Gold, he says "The-ego-ld" .

Let me explain the hit-by-car scene as well :) To me it is an excellent metaphor for unconscious mind. We often do things that are driven by greed, excess, obsession, addiction, etc., because these things either promise to make us happy or take us away from natural sadness of life. For example, look at young people these days in the streets and in the buses. They all are obsessed with their smart phones to get information. The information does not let them to be present, feel themselves, feel the happiness and sadness of their lives. Information is the drug in this case, no difference. It let them avoid the feeling of reality and all the scary things in the reality (sadness, uncertainty of future, etc.). The same is with real drugs, with collecting things, with earning money etc. What the director illustrates with the car hit, is the unconsciousness, driven by this factors, and that we are so obsessed to do some things that we don't notice that we are actually killing us as human. Jack was obsessed by figuring his way out from losing his money (and other things). But in the succeeding scene he avoids the car, and it is a choice that we can make - to be conscious.

My take on this based on interviews with Guy Ritchie, Internal Parts Therapy psychology, analyses by other people and my own is this: Most if not all of the characters in this movie are parts of Jake's personality. Con & Chess = Consciousness (as mentioned below by monolizm) Sorter represents the turning point in one's psyche (Ritchie) Samuel Gold is probably the unconscious part of us maintaining and motivating our Ego (Ritchie). Mecha is probably the conscious, visible part of our Ego. Niece of Jake's probably represents innocence. His brother and his companions (before they got gunned down) represent parts of our psyche which warn us or sooth us (we can take the stairs, Jake) Most important message of the movie is A) that our inner voice(s) is not us. We are the watcher who can observe the thoughts. Our inner voices/ego can be very devious in making us believe our false self image created by the Ego is us. (Eckhart Tolle) B) If you want to find the source of strength of Ego, look behind the pain you carry inside. There the ego hides, because it is the last place we want to look. Admit your own mistakes, bring them to light, forgive yourself then and the ego starts dissolving. (this is Ritchie's genius) C) That speech about people being just monkeys trapped in suits wanting and needing...'Fear me or revere me'....is genial as well. Excellent battle plan to dissolve one's ego - false self image. This movie will become cult classic and pinnacle of this century wisdom-art. But be careful. Ego likes to return back...now in the form of 'Look at all those people trapped in Ego...not like ME.' (Tyler Durden of RSD) Of course it is very difficult to portray human psyche in movie. Action movie on top of this. So the analyses won't be straight forward and clear cut. Many allegories will fit here and there. And it can have slightly different meaning to different people. I'd be very much interested how Kaballah fits in this besides symbols, colors and numerology. Does it have it's own detailed Ego battling plan? Where did Ritchie got this insight? Was it Kaballah? From what I read, Kaballah doesn't come near to have such insight. But I can be wrong.

I'm a big fan of this movie myself also, it help me to understand and deal with some of my own existential conflicts, I really think your breakdown is outstanding although I don't agree with some of your conclusions, I suggest to read Freud, the Ego is not a bad thing and can not die, it is a essential part of ourselves, is more about to learn how master it.

Wouldn’t call myself smart but what I gathered from this movie is simply determining what/who/where our ego is. It references a lot that the ego will try tell you that it is you/part of you. Same way we think that our lust,greed,envy or hate is a part of us, but we need to understand that it is not. It is not a part of us and neither does it control us (referencing the elevator scene), but we control IT. This shows that our ego is not us, and we have control over it, and we can always confront it, however, if we don’t deal with it and realise that in time… then death will approach us and our ego will leave and you won’t hear from it no more. Only then will you wonder “Why?” (Referencing the car scene). Why was that ego even there? Why did it make me do all the wrong things I did? Which I now regret as I am about to pass..

The first wisdom is "Know thyself"............we are our own worst enemy and best friend. The outside world, the universe simply reflects our beliefs, be they based on fear or love.

My favorite movie hands down. I prefer the UK version but US version is still good no doubt. Changed my life this film I, too, prior to viewing this film, was controlled by Sam Gold. I was an approval junkie, I believed my ego to be my best friend. This film opened my eyes to see what was really in front of me and I, like many of you, had to have my own elevator scene. Life changed for the better

The hit by car scene is to show the negative concept of craving acceptance rather than judging what is acceptable or as he says, asking "Why do we get up In the morning" He steps out and checks his phone then gets hit contrary to acting with self preservation, because he's worried about when he answers The alternate moment shows him not caring about when he answers but accepting he can choose to act instead of acting on someone else's whim.

This movie for me was about ego, truth,death enlightenment, waking up, the con job we do on ourselves and each other. Anything deep, that makes a person think goes over the head of those that just want to be entertained, hence its poor performance , the few that do get it will appreciate it, kudos to guy richie for putting together such a project🔥👍

May I interpret the scene when Jack is obliged to shoot the man who did not pay the loan? To me there could be two ego driven outcome and one free outcome in this scene. First one is that Jack would actually shoot the man. But this is the most simplistic, unclever expression of ego, because Jack would get nothing out of it. Eventually it was Avi and Sac who wasted his money and not the man, and if they got the money back it would belong to Avi and Sac anyways. Second, smarter ego driven action was that Jack would take the opportunity and kill the two of them, setting him free from continuous suffering. Even if it may seem dangerous, but in that unexpected situation his ego might take a chance to eliminate the "enemies". The third, ego free approach would be refusing shooting till the end, because either way he would not get anything anyways. In reality he needed to continue the journey and come to the light. Jack clearly fails the test and tries to get rid of the "enemies" with the first chance, and Avi and Sac agree on that - "I told you Avi ..."

I think the Sam Gold/Samuel Goldwyn connection was deliberate. Goldwyn died back in the 1970s, but the name still carries power and reputation, even if the man is no longer in existence.

No you missed it, it's not at all about what you think it is, you have to look at objects in the background as they relate to the dialog and the color changes as well as the angle in which the scene is shot. The movie is telling you how this world ran and what you can affect, it's showing you the real deal.

you are spot on there amigo. If this film was associated with Lynch or Nolan whole world would have studied it trying to find out metaphors & hidden meaning.... But ppl expect Guy Ritchie's movies to be fun/action/criminal drama....

Revolver is such a bonkers film, but I love it. It's a crime film that attempts to try something different for better or worse. Ritchie got so much criticism for it at the time because people were so confused by it, but audiences are finally starting to come round to it.

The top of the building scene is powerful, Jake realizes Zac has access to his thoughts….so he’s powerless and thus surrenders his control to “a better opponent”, Zac in order to get better at “the game” himself. It’s this moment he goes from grudgingly going along with them to realizing THEY are the smarter opponent. Game changer

I think the Statement " We are you " given by the two Shylocks could be interpreted in a spiritual way. The movie's main theme is the Ego or more to say the Ego Death. As one reaches a certain level of Ego Death or Enlighentment or whatever you wanne call it (don't focus on words as they are just pointers to a nonexisting "truth") one realises that they are the universe and everything. Keep up the good work... Both Southland Tales and Revolver are 2 of my favorite films....Guy Ritchie was at his best in this one.... I'll never forget the lollipop girl... this film is candy for the eyes and a game of chess for the mind... cheers

Ray liotta was incredible in this film.

It's sad that majority of the population is so brain dead that they just reject any film they can't instantly understand and doesn't spoon feed it's deeper meanings to the audience. I'm far from any kind of genius and I was certainly left with questions after my first watch of this movie, but those types of situations only make me want to learn and understand more, not take out my lack of understanding on what I thought was a good, thought provoking movie. ( I totally agree with your statement about people's expectations from a Guy Ritchie film and maybe this would have been accepted more had a different name been attached. Which is also sad but I'll end my rant now 🤣)

Zack & Avi are internal virtual creations of Jake. Philosophically it makes no difference but if you want reality in films (I don't need it) then these aren't real persons, because they vanished from prison. There is a scene showing prison guards searching a cell for vanished prisoners but in actuality, if you will, they were calming an agitated Jake's mental state when he believed these illusion of Zack & Avi.

Maybe Sam Gold never appeared because he doesn't exist. He's that mega powerful, super capable man who's envied and admired... He's rich, sees everything and feared by everyone:. He's the superhero alpha male we tell ourselves we are in our minds (fantasies) to shield our pride from the shortcomings and insecurities we detest.

Revolver is like what Richard linklater would make had he been from the uk and had the kind of success to garner a real movie budget with the freedom of concept and the audacity to really try something different. Bravo mr Ritchie

The voice is not "Ego", it is an energy entity joined with you at birth, speaking into your mind in your voice so you believe wrongly, that it is you. You just have to monitor your thoughts and when an errant thought slips in, stop, turn around and look at it, and tell it to get the heck out.

The fact that it flopped proved a point - most people only understand it at a very superficial level

the film is beautifully made. the neon futuristic cyber-punk atmosphere and the neon glow in the dark cinematography is gorgeous. however the movie is very confusing and although scene by scene you would think that this movie is a masterpiece it falls short as whole is a generous understatement. it is very difficult to follow. i was watching it under the assumption that it will all make sense eventually but it never. does. I have read all the different interpretations of it about how this movie is a representation of ego and i suppose i can accept that but it still does nothing for me. This concept was done before in films like Identify with John Cusack and Jennifer Lawrence starred in a movie about husband and wife living in their beautiful home and the husband started inviting guests into their home which turned out to be a thoughtless act made by the husband and it was a representation of God and Mother Nature and how god destroyed mother nature through contaminating it by humanity and it was done way better. This film had so much potential but definitely does not live up to what i imagined in my mind and i consider a film as good only if its at least on par to what i imagine its like.

SO reference to you trying to dissect Sam Gold and the ego (around 12:30). Like you said Sam Gold is essentially the out of control consuming ego (anger, greed, hate, lust and more). It drives you towards your uncontrollable vices BUT as you mentioned Samuel Goldwyn (you're kind of breaking the fourth wall) you're referencing an 'exterior' character to the story. Someone who influences the narrative but not automatically from inside of it SO Sam Gold (the exterior version) is basically a corrupted reality formed by/forming an evil character. Could be a reference to corrupt reality, the devil or evil. Essentially that's the "all around us" that Avee mentions. Evil or corruption uses the out of control ego to run reality because it's just a big perpetuation of vices in each person being used over and over again. The ego "acts like your friend" make you think it's okay to be egotistical. "The less that controls you, the more you control" meaning let go of your vices, give of yourself and don't worry about how you're "perceived". If you just do what's right consciously instead of listening to the corrupted ego you escape the false corrupt existence driven by the corrupted ego being manipulated by evil or whatever you want to call it.

I feel like "gold" is an external form of internal reality, created by the perception of Man that we aren't able to accept this internal reality (ego). "Gold" represents our fears, and is portrayed as a singe and separate form of physical reality.

whether Avi and Zach are real or not i believe that they are representations of the SuperEgo and ID. Avi the id, because Avi is the one constantly challenging and belittling jake. bursting his bubble and reminding him that he's small, zach the superego. anything zach ever says directly to zach is either to challenge him to do things he's not comfortable with like staying in the elevator, telling him to kill the dude who's name escapes me, pushing him to build up a version of himself that jake knows he's not and can never truly become because it's a fictional version of himself

I feel like this is more of an explanation of the film then an explanation the philosophical nature … all that said this movie is severely underrated.

I think this is one of the best movies of Jason Statham. You do realize that it is impossible to challenge everyone's game/ego unless you fully understand yourself.

11:10 It's a short "time manipulation"... he was supposed to die and come to terms with his mortality, in the last moments of his life he re-evaluated his life, hence the dialogue you hear.... however having gone through that internal dialogue, and committing to find a resolve, to ask the question: "WHY?" That gave him a second chance and he wasn't hit by the car (nor did the dialoge ever happen) but he did however have the new resolve inside of him. It's a cleaver way to show that you don't need "Sam Gold" to narrate your thoughts, you can just feel what is right to do.

Avi wins the chess game at the end to show that he in fact was better than Jake all this time since Jake only uses the formula that they CREATED. So Avi beating Jake in the end is to show that "I let you think you're smarter and I'm dumber" which is part of the con. He let's Jake think he's smarter by letting Jake win all the time but at the end he shows that Jake was played all along and that Jake was the one being conned.

Back in 2009 or 2008,this was the only DVD movie i had in the rented studio i was living in.I watched it twice a day for 2 full months until i learned and understood the formula.10 years later i own several real estate properties and I plan to build a legacy before 43.This movie is brilliant and very useful

I just watched this today for first time, never heard of it. I liked it alot but I am confused about the whoele ending and what exactly is going on.

Avi and sack are real as once they escaped prison they used jakes money to set up the real world version of Sam gold. (Remember who macca went to see for the powder. The massive house, staff all needed to be set up). Also a big thing you overlooked was the reason why the left jake in prison. He wasn’t ready to leave aka ready to kill the ego. Hence the last scene in the movie when avi says we are you.

I think the Green getting hit by the car seen is like the scene in Fight Club when Edward Norton shoots himself in the mouth and kills Tyler. Takes a huge shock to let the mind kill/silence the ego to be able to think clearly. My two cents idk. Great break down btw.

My first watch was the directors cut, at the end my mind was literally blown. I couldn't figure out weather it was the greatest movie I'd ever seen or was it just nothing. Every day I thought about it and with every thought the movie got better. This movie is one of a kind.

Now it makes a lot more sense, right... because by your explanation, even though Macha has lost, it doesn't explain why he is in such a state... surely not simply because "Jake doesn't care". You have to know what is on the other side of EGO... the thing is, you don't... You thought this film gave you answers, but it was posing questions... Questions you have to go out, and find the answers to, for yourself... and maybe, one day, you will confront your own Sam Gold, and maybe one day, I will call you brother.

The only part I don't get in the movie when Zack & Ave disappear from the jail. Any ideas about that?

This was a great movie. Your ego is not your amigo. This is a daily battle
