The church needed more dirt removed for the preschool playground. Tractor Time with Tim loves to dig! Tim took Johnny 2 (John Deere 2038R) with the 270B Backhoe for this job. The Case Mini-Excavator is away at a trade show.

Tim, So many people act like there's no other parameter to consider when picking the equipment used for a job. That's just insanity! Of course, you could go in there with a Cat 980G and have this project done it 2 minutes, but you'd spend $10,000 to rent it (if you ave a buddy at the company), then you'd have to get a lowboy into the parking lot, and you'd probably end up clipping the edge of the concrete, destroying the whole pad, and the list goes on and on... I for one LOVE watching your small projects. These videos help me to figure out what the capabilities and limitations of these small pieces of equipment REALLY are, not just what the salesman says. It's hard for us, especially walking into this whole sub-compact tractor market, to really know what's the right way to go with our future equipment purchases. It's even harder to decide if we'll be able to make it "pay for itself", let alone, if it will fit in their storage, transport on the trailer I already have, pull with the truck I already use.

Great video! As a software designer/network engineer myself for over 30 years, I certainly appreciate and agree with your therapeutic perspective. Although I also grew up around a family farm, it’s impractical to think the perfect equipment will always be available to accomplish a task. It’s probably even more so with your typical audience. Making do with what you have immediate access to is the name of the game and nothing wrong with having some fun in the process.

My little Massey won’t let me leave it in gear - it’ll kill the engine when you lift the seat to get on the backhoe. The thing that I need to rig up is a remote lever for the loader valve so I can lift the bucket up a few inches to move the machine without reaching around backwards.

My sub compact tractor will do EVERYTHING.. haha just kidding.. that’s a quick way to wear it out fast tho even tho it will do quite a bit! Another great video Tim! I’m in the market for a mini/micro excavator.. looking for something used, old and beat up so that I can buy it cheap and fix it up. I feel between my sub compact tractor and a mini excavator it will really open me up for future jobs. Keep pumping out the videos Tim I love them.

Tim, a solution so you never forget a shovel: drill a hole in the end of the shovel handle. Slip the shovel handle through the open round tube at the front of the FEL. Put a sport tube pin through the shovel handle hole, and viola shovel storage.

We tend to work at it and do the best we can with what we have and that is the better part of it. I still commute to the city for my job, but being able to return to the country every day (to my wife, children and 2025r) is so calming and peaceful. Wouldn't change it for the world!

I agree a tractor with out a backhoe may as well not have a loader either. I simply cant imagine NOT having my backhoe attachment. it has saved me more than a few times. beside the backhoe is for digging a lot better and more than the front end loader in my opinion. I use the hoe to dig and the loader to simply move loose dirt after its been dug up.

I think that I know who you are referring to and I agree with them for most people as you are only using it maybe once a year or longer unless you are a contractor who works with it every week. I didn't buy one on my newest or oldest tractor since I would only use it maybe once or twice and I could rent a backhoe and tractor and use it for the small projects I would use it for. That tractor is doing a nice job though and the backhoe is handy for it.

I have gone back and forth on if I should get a back hoe attachment for my 3 series or an excavator. The only reason I have chosen to go with an expensive excavator is that the backhoe will not be able to do the main jobs that I'm looking for it to do and thats land clearing work. We have a small farm that a creek runs through it and gets clogged up with trees and I need an excavators reach and high flow hydraulic capabilities to use a fecon type of attachment to remove brush and trees away from the creek. Other than that If I didn't need to do that I would definitely go with the way cheaper backhoe option.

Hope this helps you.

Hey Tim, I was watching you move the piles with the bucket loader with the tooth bar... It looks like it is harder to get full scoops with the tooth bar installed. Looked like it makes it harder to fill the back side of the bucket up and tends to push the pile more. I have been debating getting a tooth bar but once I break thru the top crust of the ground I don't have any issues digging into the dirt w/o the teeth, unless there is a lot of rock. Do you feel this is the case sometimes? Do you feel there are any down sides to using the teeth?
@TractorTimewithTim

Toothbar is absolutely amazing! You will not regret getting a Heavy Hitch toothbar! It is much easier to dig, and to fill the bucket. If you do find an area where the teeth are in the way, the toothbar is trivial to remove.

I have a straight cutting edge that drops onto the 24" bucket on my older JD 1650 backhoe attachment. The 1650 is a 16' reach unit that was made by American Trencher and branded JD. It goes on my 2440 JD tractor. The cutting edge came with the hoe, I'm not sure where it was made. It pins on over the bucket teeth with two small spring pins, goes on or comes off in a minute. I find that it is useful to have it on for about 75% of all digging. It lays over the teeth and gives you a smooth trench bottom plus increases the bucket capacity by maybe 10%. For digging in hardpan the straight edge gets removed, it's best to have the teeth working for that. Wish I could add a photo, it's a very simple piece that really helps. I agree, the tractor backhoe attachment is a tremendously useful item. I didn't want to fork out for the attachment, but the seller would not sell the tractor separately. Really glad of that now.

Working by yourself, you had the perfect tool for what needed to be accomplished, except for the hand shovel! :-) :-) Add it to your departure checklist! I like to use one simply to eliminate the need to memorize what's needed for every project.

I agree with you about how much fun and satisfying a BH is. I got my 2038r in August. Interesting that we had similar careers. I retired from software in April after 35 years. This is more satisfying.

Hey Tim, I immediately went to look for this backhoe hater🙂. To be fair I can understand his arguments against it and if you really are a person that would only use it once or twice a year then yes, renting is the way to go. I have a 1025R with the 260B and I have easily put 20 hours on it my first summer and I expect to double that next summer. Larger jobs such as burying your 700lb buddy that has gone on to that great pasture in the sky will need an excavator and that’s fine. I have a few acres getting cleared of Alderwoods, blackberries and a plethora of other vegetation along with some massive stumps, so I hired a guy. It’s too much for Johnny and once that’s cleared, Johnny can manage the rest. The 260B does a great job on rootballs less than 3 feet across and can probably do some larger ones with a lot of patience. Another complaint was removing, but he REALLY hated re-attaching the backhoe. Again, I understand, but I wonder if non-John Deere’s are more difficult. Even the 260B can be a pain if it slumps out of position, but a little practice and patience goes a long way to get better. My plan is to create a jig to hold it in that sweet spot and that will eliminate the re-attachment pain altogether. This brings up a suggested episode... perhaps you could provide some tips on re-positioning the backhoe when it slumps out of position?

Even tho I own a mini I still find the backhoe on my tractor quite useful. I use it all the time on my smaller projects where I need a small trench for some conduit we’re running or if I just need to dig a small area and don’t want to bring the mini. You learn how to deal wit what your spoils the more you do it. If I’m Digging a patio I usually dig it half at a time and deposit them on the other half so I can scoop it with the front bucket. If I find the soil is a easy dig I will dig a area the size of the tractor with the hoe and then I can keep the bucket on grade and dig out the rest using the front bucket. And for power I find that the 46 backhoe on my 2720 has plenty of power. I even use it to lift my 350lb compactor in and out of the hole.

I saw the recent video that you referred to and I agree with you. The peace of mind that my 270B brings to me is immeasurable. I am physically unable to do much with a shovel for myself anymore, but I can certainly run the backhoe and my back doesn't hurt when I'm finished. "TM" is just jealous of those who want to be self sufficient.

I disagree with that backhoe video as well... If you can afford to have one it's only going to make your life easier around the house.

I built a 4ft x 5 1/2 ft electric over hyd. dump trailer..its low enough to fill with my backhoe w/o slowing things down too much..nice not to handle the same dirt twice..the next project is fabricating a hitch on the backhoe to hook the dump trailer to and not have to hook and unhook or utilize another tractor..might be an idea for you as well

You've got to check out the kubota l47. We've got almost 500 hours on outlets. Amazing little machine. And you dont have to get off the machine to move forward and backward. I've also found that running a smaller backhoe. Idle it up a bit higher and the controls smooth out a bit

Casey may have been the right tool for the job, Tim. Nice work as always! It is very true what you said about such work being rewarding. I am a police dispatcher and do light excavation with my skidsteer on the side. There really is something about seeing some progress at the end of a workday. Even if the job is not complete.
