I gotta say, my two oldest girls watched the saga in machete order (4,5,1,2,3,6) with a ton of Clone Wars episodes to lead up to this movie. It took a while, but they were VERY receptive to the big plot stuff as a result. They were so emotionally affected by Anakin's betrayal, the clones who had no choice, and when Vader dies in RotJ, they actually cried for him.

It was the "Do It" for me. I casually say that line. Palpatine voice is the best evil villain's voice of all time. My biggest disappointment was General Grievous... He deserved a better fight scene and death. He was killed with a laser gun. I wanted the 2D Animated Clone Wars Grievous, who was a beast and a threat.

I think people overthink the “bad dialogue” of George’s movies. Yes it’s cheesy, but it’s also clearly by design. He went for campy throwback and it’s part of his vision and inspiration of the movies. I’m not here to say “it’s great dialogue”, just that people overthink it and for while let it overshadow the incredible story and groundbreaking effects. In all six movies. The man is too much of a genius and we should give him more credit for what he was doing.

Also there is a video game called Clone Wars for PS2 and XBOX (now xbox backwards compatible) . Its a story right in the end of Ep2 and it also helps a lot in understanding Anakin and Obi Wan "friendship" because they have more time together in the war. So there was some material to help us before Ep3 but I agree we shouldn't need to have extra material to get emotionaly invested. But thats why Ep3 works so well for me at first I got 2 different Clone War material before the film.

Wouldn't it have been nuts if during Obi-Wan and Anakins fight, Anakin does a force attack ment for Obi-Wan, but damages the landing platform Padme is on, and she goes down. Anakin, instead of going to save her, he's so enraged he continues his fight with even more anger. Once the fight is over Obi-Wan is able to rescue her, but she too injured to save her and the twins. She's lucid enough and tells them to save her children. Makes Sideious' line to Vader the in his rage he killed her even more powerful. Also, I know it's a long movie, but I always wished we got a bit of suited up Vader fighting at the end. Imagine an added 5-10 mins within the scene of Obi-Wan and Yoda making their escape with the twins of Sideious telling Vader there's a group of Jedi held up on a planet and you have Vader wrecking shop (like the last scene in Rough One). It's end with Vader amongst the devastation before the last shot of Beru, Owen, and Luke on Tatooine. Last thing, the last Obi-Wan trailer we end up getting, it's an amazing trailer and at the end screen goes black and you just hear Liam Nelson just say "Obi-Wan". I'd loose my mind!!

In ANH I think Obi-Wan was saying to Luke that his father wanted him to have this as a bit of a kindness. In that moment he’s still trying to keep the secret of Vader and let Luke wonder about the good man his father once was. So yes it was a lie, but one done on purpose for Luke’s benefit. I love these! I agree with you Harloff, I wish Vader would have said “destroy” too. Funny enough that line exists in Lucas’s 4th draft of the script. I got my MFA in screenwriting and really enjoyed using Star Wars for analysis papers. It’s at the top of page 153. Anakin: “Don’t make me destroy you, Master. You’re no match for the Dark Side” Obi Wan: “I’ve heard that before, Anakin, but I never thought I’d hear it from you.” His first line “Don’t make me kill you.” Is in their first exchange, I imagine that’s why this dialogue during the fight was edited out. A hat on a hat, as it were.

Another great deep dive! I'm bummed that Mike wasn't part of this one. I hope he's back next week. I enjoyed rewatching this movie. I thought the banter between Anakin and Obi-wan was fun. My favorite part will always be the opera scene between Anakin and Palpatine. I think Lucas intended for Palpatine to be Anakin's father but chickened out about pulling the trigger that would confirm it. The facts are all there. One thing that has always bothered me that you guys didn't touch on was how Padme was running around pregnant and unwed (to everyone's knowledge) but no one bats an eye. No one wonders who the father is, etc? She's obviously pregnant too.

When the medical droid said Padme had “lost the will to live” it didn’t mean that she had given up on life/had nothing to live for. It meant she was dying of unknown/natural causes but the droid simply phrased it that way. Padme was ALWAYS destined to die in childbirth. And while I’m at it. Leia didn’t know Luke was her brother throughout the OT. When she said “I know” in ROTJ what she meant was “oh, that makes sense” as soon as Luke told her.

I can understand where some nit picks come from especially with fans who saw the OT first, but a lot of them I just disagree with or they just do not bother me. I grew up with the prequels and Episode 3 especially. This is still my favorite Star Wars movie followed by the OT. There is so much depth and care put into it and all the prequels. One thing that sometimes bothers me is pointing out "flaws" in the prequels that the OT has as well. I just think it gets unfair treatment compared to the OT. I love them both equally. The sequels on the other hand... there are some things that just destroy the story and characters which I can't get over.

Always thought it was jacked-up that ObiWan left Anakin burning in pain instead of just giving him a little force push into the lava to end it (obviously can’t because it doesn’t fit, but realistically would have been the thing to do). Also dumb that Yoda and ObiWan separate instead of taking on Palpantine together…seems like this was a lesson learned already by ObiWan with Dooku, and one that he already acknowledged with Anakin at the beginning of the movie, “This time we do it together.” WTFH, they’re both literally there right around the corner from Palpatine.

Regarding Anakin's turn being quick which is a common complaint, well, falling to the dark side IS quick or else Return of the Jedi completely falls apart. Palpatine didn't manipulate Luke as he did with Anakin, his entire strategy was to spend a few minutes making Luke angry enough to activate the "trigger" that would cause him to embrace the dark side. Yoda even calls the dark side a "quick and easy path" and Anakin's trigger in this film was far more substantial than Luke's. Luke didn't bite but Palpatine thought he would and he knows a thing or two about the dark side... Sometimes your feeling in the first viewing can sustain your impression of a film - remember being bored for parts of TPM and AOTC but for the last half of ROTS was on the edge of my seat, and thanks to John Williams, teared up (twice) for the first time in a SW film... Let's go all out with Clone Wars flashbacks in Obi-Wan, giving more Jedi live-action speaking roles which will make Order 66 even more impactful...

Oddly enough, I loved ROTS so much when I was younger. But now, I wish so much that more time would have been devoted to Anakin and Obi-Wan’s relationship. They spend 3/4 of the movie apart after having spent about the same amount apart in AOTC. Anakin’s turn is still hard to accept given the love that we’re supposed to buy into between he and Obi-Wan. There is a great deal of subtext in this film, but I wish Lucas would have brought more of his ideas to the forefront. Still, the visuals are great and Ewan and Hayden were never better. And though Natalie Portman did not have a lot to do, I think her scenes with Hayden were full of depth- regardless of lines like “So love has blinded you?” It’s a beautiful film and I can understand why it’s the favorite for so many.

Great discussion again guys. I too love the opera scene and the silent "Gladiator" style scene between Anakin and Padme, knowing their fate. George also appears alongside Katie Lucas in the beginning when Windu is talking to Palpatine. Is a flawed movie but parts of it are great, the story is better written just still not executed as good as it could have been due to dialogue and direction. I agree they have to bring back Qui-Gon. Padme would had survived if not for big scoopy hands, “Uuba- uuba-“ droid “helping” her with child birth. But on a non joking note, just like how so many things are implied in the opera / Plagues scene, likewise, I think it’s implied Sidious siphoned life from Padme -> Vader. There’s a RU-vid video out there that focuses on the sound design and how Vader’s heartbeat stops, then starts across these scene intercutting. Anyway, this is the better head cannon that I hope I can convince others to champion.

The story line is great, the fall of Anakin, the last words with Obi-Wan after they fight, it works. But everything before that feels the most prequel-y of the prequels. A lot of scenes with the characters sitting or standing around discussing the plot, interspersed with a ton of action that sometimes serves the plot but most times is just there. That's why Phantom Menace is still my favorite of the prequels. It's massively flawed but it at least flows like a proper movie. But on the whole, the overall story makes the prequels worth it.

Though, I'm not entirely sure exactly what caused this severance, but I have 3 guesses. 1. Anakin caused the disconnect by choking her 2. Palpatine caused the disconnect to further manipulate Anakin or 3. The Whills decided her part in this cosmic soap opera was over.

I love Ewen but I do not understand why people say he was the best thing in the prequels. He played Obi Wan like a cartoon character. I have high hopes for the series though, he is a great actor and Hayden Christianson is a great actor. The prequels suffered from the director not the actors.

The story Obi-Wan told Luke about his father never synced up with this version and the hostility Uncle Owen felt for Obi-Wan and Annakin going on some damn fool crusade didn’t either. They barely knew each other. Anakin met Owen once and Obi-Wan dropped off a baby and then headed for the hills. Hopefully the Obi-Wan series will cover some of that. I think George had a new story he wanted to tell and basically ignored the story beats from episode 4. Do your remember that behind the scenes video where they were editing the film and no one was brave enough to tell Lucas there were problems with it? If someone spoke up, we might have some continuity between the stories.

Just watched the episode, some fantastic thoughts as per always. Your discussion regards the Kenobi series and the chances of flashbacks with Anakin and Obi-Wan got me thinking. Surely it would the perfect opportunity to do that and finally get Ashoka in too and get the 3 of them on screen together. All 3 actors/actresses are in the family and it would also be a great chance to introduce the characters to viewers that maybe haven’t watched The Clone Wars but loved her appearance in The Mandalorian.

I wish grievous was more like he was in the 2003 clone wars though. Oh, hello there! I'd like to say, I really love these rewatches, even though I have to follow them from memory at the moment as I'm currently a bit at arms length with the Star Wars movies, for another franchise (I'm busy watching through the James Bond-series at the moment). Still there's a couple of things I'd like to comment on. Obi-Wan not killing Anakin: maybe I don't remember it well enough, but my impression was Obi-Wan did not intend to kill Anakin when he "hitchhiked" to Mustafar. Didn't he go there to see after Anakin and to persuade him back? After all, until the fight begins there was still a little spark of hope in Obi-Wan he might be able to convince Anakin. After all the two "brothers" went through, despite the moral devastation, I think Obi-Wan was even still in denial Anakin could be gone for good, when he shred him to pieces and thus he not finished him. He even gave Anakin that one final chance to back off. Anakin rejected it and payed a bitter price. Was Obi-Wan really in for a kill or could he just not be able do it himself for the brotherhood they shared? Maybe that's why he left Anakin behind... Pacing: you tackled this indirectly on the show, talking about possible runtimes and the amount of content that needed to be told in this movie. One of my last impressions of Episode III was, that it took a somewhat similar, but better thought out route as The Rise Of Skywalker. With only about 140 minutes left, it went pedal to the metal with one or two exceptions. For what its worth, it could have been a smoother ride till the end, if not for the opening sequence, eating up a massive chunk of Episode III's runtime. After Anakin's turn, the movie kicks into high gear and becomes some kind of a clipshow at a frantic speed. There's so much heavy stuff in it, that receives so very little time to breathe, like someone took all the kickers out of a miniseries without much of a body around it. Maybe they should have trimmed the opening and have added a few bits and pieces at the end instead with extended versions of existing scenes to create a little extra suspense here and there instead of rushing on. Also a great scene with Padme, Bail Organa and others, talking politics, even got cut out of the movie entirely. I think that scene is a good example of where the power of TV shows lies. Which leads to my next point... Star Wars TV series: I agree that Star Wars has done some great things on TV and TV is a great opportunity to bring some meat to the bone. I just think the creators haven't brought this opportunity to it's full glory yet. After The Mandalorian hit that homerun with its season 2 finale, The Bad Batch on the other end fell a bit into the "TV trap". Despite some brilliant episodes, there were quite a few shallow ones as well and way too much "memberberries" instead of plot progression. I think a more condensed (shorter) season would have kept the excitement level up way better. Sometimes it felt like being handed a little nugget at the end of each episode, saying: "Thank you for watching the twenty minutes prior to this". Maybe one can get away with that kind of storytelling today when you have at least two episodes a week. But with the weekly release The Bad Batch felt spread very thin at times and required a lot of patience. What I want to say is: TV has the opportunity to explore characters and stories and that's great overall, but it can also fall into a streak of feeding empty calories that taste good but give you nothing. We've had a bit of both thus far and there's still a lot of headroom to fill for the creators, to make things not just entertaining, but all-out exciting.

The PT pretty much makes everything Obi-Wan says to Luke about his past feel like obfuscation or (slight) manipulation. Nope, never "owned" a droid like R2-D2. Yep, Darth Vader totally killed your father. He's been waiting on Tattooine for decades, for Luke Skywalker to come of age, so they can team up and take down Darth Vader/the Emperor. Over-complicating that agenda with something like the whole truth makes that task a little bit harder. Because we all know that Luke would rush off to do exactly what he does in ROTJ: Try to bring his father back from the Dark Side. And he would have either been killed or turned.

Kristian, you are going to hate me but i believe this movie surpasses Empire for me. 1 was cool for it was, 2 was ook rough but ok, 3 was a whole over level i didn't had no expectation going to this movie. I feel like this was the movie George wanted to tell and i can tell its so much better. I love how we see how Anakin was so conflicted about everything from his relationship between the Jedi and Palpatine, visions of Padme dying, etc. I could make a 5 page book report on how this movie is good but the one thing I've learned, well 2, from this movie. I feel like Geroge was trying make Anakin more human than the Jedi just give audiences to relate to. 2 I feel like Anakin was showing me is how far will you do for the people that you love when if it means doing things you don't want to do but for the ones you cherish it will be worth the price.

At 52:37, Kristian says "If Anakin sits back," and doesn't get involved with the Windu/Palpatine fight, everything would be fine, implying that Windu would have defeated Palpatine, but I've always thought that Palps was only pretending to be beaten -- he could undoubtedly sense that Anakin was on his way, and indeed he "loses his saber" and appears to be at Windu's mercy juuust as Anakin runs into the room, forcing Anakin to make the choice that Palpatine knew he'd ultimately make.

My take on Windu Palpatine fight is that Windu beats Palpatine because he kicks him in the face and he's crawling and whimpering the floor then Anakin shows up and instantly goes to plan B and you want proof that he's not throwing the fight is right after he kills Kit Fiso he has this big old smile on his face like hes really enjoying himself and later with Yoda he said I've been waiting for this for a very long time my little green friend so all that and more is why in my opinion he lost the fight then goes plan B which who ultematly wins

So about the Padme birthing Vader being born scene. This is the way I have always looked at it. When the medical droid says that. I think Palpatine used her life force too save Anakin. Like a life for a life. Medically there was nothing wrong with her. The droids couldn’t explain it. Plus Palpatine lied and you could tell to push Anakin further torment him. I also feel like Palpatine could have put the vision of her dying in child birth in Anakins head. The irony of Padme dying is what prompted Anakin to go to the dark side. She would not have died in child birth had he not turned to the dark side. This was my favorite movie of the prequels. But it has become my top 2-3 Star Wars movie

Clone Wars Tartakovsky miniseries is a better companion piece to ROTS than the 3d Clone Wars series. There are a lot of inconsistencies in TCW. Like why doesn't anyone reference Ahsoka at all. It introduces new major characters that aren't relevant at all to ROTS. If not Padme or Obi Wan you'd think Anakin would think about Ahsoka before murdering younglings. Grievous declares he's trained in the Jedi arts, Obi Wan should already know this. Grievous is a goofball in TCW but he is truly menacing in CW miniseries. Also CW miniseries explains his cough directly. Another thing I like about the Prequels is that characters don't last long and new villains pop up all the time. It's Star Wars, people die in war. Dooku gets killed so the Seps have a backup in Grievous, that's enough explanation. Grievous isn't supposed to have investment from the audience. He's a place holder as a character and in universe, Palpatine says it to his face. Maul and Jango were villains for a single movie like Grievous. His cough seems explained enough with the fact that he's a cyborg. He's a prototype for Vader and they didn't have good enough technology yet. It's not easy for a living being to become a machine without medical side effects even in Star Wars.
