It's so interesting to hear of a place where wild boar would actually be *beneficial* to the ecosystem. As someone who lives in a part of the world where feral pigs are considered a major nuisance, it's fascinating to me to hear of a place that could really benefit from their wild ancestor's reintroduction.
@CrimsonReapa
@CrimsonReapa 2 месяца назад
bc wild boar are native to ireland so the plants and fauna have evolved alongside them and are adapted to them, where as all the areas they are non native get destroyed as nothing in those ecosystems can handle them hence why invasive wild bolar decimate areas like Australia, but as said in the video ireland has 2 plants that are a huge problem as only native boar can eat them and without the boar those 2 plants ( 1 being invasive) are outcompeting other native plants as they don't have anything to keep them in check since boars were the only native animal that ate those plants

@@owli-wankenobi3727 Yeah it is really interesting isn't it? After beavers they would be considered the most important ecosystem engineers in Europe. Yet in North America (a relatively similar ecosytem) they're a real nuisance. Even domestic pigs are used in projects in Europe where Wild Boar aren't suitable (there are laws about introducing wild animals) and feral pigs very quickly learn how to behave like their ancestors.

Boar do best to help in places with lots of rainfall and greens, you introduce boar to a dry place and you get desertification due to how intense they look for ground foods.

Funny enough I live in an area of Europe where wild boars are considered a pest and an incredible nuisance. They enter the city I live in and dig through our trash cans, steal fruits from trees and often scare people. They are considered agressive and personally I know of a person whose dog got killed by a boar with piglets. Unfortunately our government is quite lacking in dealing with this issue as we don't have an organization that deals with wildlife in urban areas and even when we do try to deal with it we enter an enchanted circle of "call the police-> the police says it's not their problem and call the hunters-> the hunters are not allowed to use firearms near inhabited zones so they call the city zoo-> the city zoo doesn't have the funds to take in and relocate the boars so they call the police" and on and on and on

In the context of North American wolf conservation, (particularly with American feral pigs), I have imagined large enclosures where wolves can have as their territory as half a conservation center that I briefly worked at, and half nature reserve where the enclosure acts as a giant animal trap on a large scale, and the wolves are the predators that practice their natural hunting strategies after initially being taught and encouraged how to hunt pray like feral pigs and wild boar, along with native pray. I have a feeling that a similar model could be used in the rewilded properties as described in the video when it comes to the erasion lynx; even if it’s possible for an aviary style enclosure, so the lynx can’t escape. I hope to very much pursue this idea myself after imagining it, and it’s potential for conservation, and agricultural adaptation for reminding farmers and ranchers how to use livestock guardians that emulate the wild defense tactics against predators, and teach the predators, (like wolves in particular), how to again, hunt their native wild prey, and feral nuisances.

I finished a masters in illustration a few months ago and the first few minutes of this video could almost be the script for my final presentation. Regarding reintroducing wild boar as described in the video, let alone pigs that are capable, I wonder if the Irish pork industry can get behind that, let alone landowners that could try that out, where the pigs could eat the needed vegetation as described, and humans are the predators with timeless pork recipes. There is also the flipside argument of how bison and other historically wild animals being ranched as livestock having medical check ups versus having their wild instincts be what they are against native predators.

Lynx never got wiped out up here in Sweden and have seen an increase in the last few decades. The number of domesticated animals killed by them is tiny, and since the state "owns" all predators the farmers get compensation. Reintroducing wolves here was very controversial, and still is! Even so, the Swedish wolves are slowly increasing and spreading out (started by the southern Norwegian border), but the genetics are constrained and really needs to connect with the Finnish wolves bu that hasn't happened yet. Boar? Have they really only grown to a couple of thousand in GB since the 80s? Some escaped from pens in Sweden in the 70s and now there's hundreds of thousands! We're not as densly populated as England :D and there were no wolves around at the time. Boar got wiped out in medival times here. I think we ate them all? The next animal being discussed/studied for reintroduction in Sweden is Visent. I would love that. And reintroduce is kind of the wrong word, apparently they never got established here after the ice pulled back since humans moved in well before the land became ready to be a visent habitat. i.e. if not for us humans being here they would be here already - so a kind of reintroduction, I guess. all that said: Your list seems very reasonable! And in that order. Do it now!

When you mentioned the history of the wolf’s extermination in Ireland because of one man, it reminded me of the movie Wolfwalkers, which the premise takes place in that point in time when the land was being heavily pushed back and as a result, much of the wildlife had suffered from it. It is a shame how many animals across the planet were once worshipped ages ago and now they’re being hunted or extinct for so long that it has become a distant memory. Humanity has always undermining the value of the natural landscapes that due to our arrogance and ignorance, the balance has been severed and we tend to forget that in the grand scheme of things, we’re insignificant and we shouldn’t expand our power. In Scotland we have a healthy rewilding movement and the space and appropriate environmental resources to develop a new approach. It is very important to balance the local culture with rewilding projects. A point touched on here is the former cultural importance of the wolf in the world view of the Gael. The many words that we have for the wolf gives a clue to this. Rewilding is a cultural activity. That is why there can’t really be a ‘uk’ approach. The Cailleach would simply not have it.

@@Eco-Nerd i would disagree on that, they're probably even more easy to reintroduce than wolves. 1. far less dammage on sheeps and cattle 2. culturally important, maybe more than wolves, in celtic and gaelic culture iconography etc. 3. they're less carnivorous/predtaory, so don't impact farmers or hunters that much. 4. better cultural and mediatic perception, not as demonized and seen as more "friendly" despite being the only predator that can and will (rarely) attack human compared to lynx, wolves or wolverine. look at the situation scandinavia, eastern Europe or even France, they accept bear far more than wolves. They tolerate bear but are very hostile toward wolves. what's surprising is what kind of brown bear should be used for reintroduction in ireland. Roman says that irish bear were very large and ferocious, genetic analysis show they were a distinct lineage from modern two clade of bear in Europe, and had lot of polar bear mtdna. Sitka/Stickeen bear or even Kodiak bear seem to be the best proxy in genetics. But using scandinavian bear would be the most practical and second best choice.

The Beavers that were reintroduced in Scotland had become a viable healthy population by the time they were ‘found’. There was then a Scottish Govt. official reintroduction to give substantial backing to the unofficial beavers, and then these were all given protection in law. This is the case in Scotland, where this matter is an issue for the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. Many beavers from Scotland have been introduced into English projects since then but I have no idea what the legal status of the species is there. Scotland got its Beavers from Norway. I live in Greece in the city of Peiraeus which is part of the larger Athens /Piraeus urban complex numbering some 4 million people. There's a large national park nearby, at the mountain of Parnetha only 20 klms from the Athens centre. It hosts red and row deer, boar, Cretan wild goat and other animals. It is probably the most widely visited mountain in Greece. Back in 2011 people begun to see strange wolf like animals and notified the local forest department. Photo traps were placed, experts came and finally it was official. Wolves were back to Parnetha a century after they had gone extinct. Since then no incident of a wolf attack has been reported, ecological balance has returned to the mountain and packs of stray dogs who used to plague the place have been exterminated. And may l remind you that literally hundreds of people visit the mountain especially in the winter. That's the threat that wolves pose to humans.
