Rewiring the 110 Volt Power to the Garden Railroad - "The Wrath of Grapes"

A sudden failure of the power mains to the garden railroad and garden shed led to the rewiring of the supply wire from the breaker in the garage to the shed. The line was shorted by the heavy grapes that had attached themselves to the wires pulling against some "not good" installation of the outdoor wiring.
An inspection of the wire revealed not just one place where the wire was suspect, but about a dozen such places! SO a total rethink and redo was in order.
The wire from the power panel the the shop is laid in a conduit to a junction box on the back of the layout. From here it fed three outlet boxes on the back of the benchwork and then back into the conduit to the garden shed where the power runs the online sprinkler timer, battery chargers, lights, and the low voltage to the layout lighting.
The section between the junction boxes was exposed outdoor grade Romex wire stapled to the lattice. Several of the heavy staples were cutting into the cable as were the grape vines, and the weight of the crop of grapes was causing these to cut the insulation. SO we opted to abandon the wire and run new outdoor grade wire under the benchwork and move the outlet boxes to the front of the benchwork.
Pulling the stiff wire through holes drilled every 16 inches while crawling in the dirt grass and rocks under the layout was - - well - - not fun. We have omitted this video as it's too intense for young audiences. But as the light failed on day one we had boxes and wire in place.
Karyn is a wiz at this kind of wiring, so she took over the project and installed all new outlets and wires. Anyone familiar with Karyn's structure models knows she is well-known for her power systems, especially her detailed power meters!
NOW because it's just been that kind of summer, we received a severe weather alert for that afternoon. So we got an early start and had the project buttoned up and the tools all put away a full five minutes before the first lightning strike.
ANYWAY, it looks great, and works great too!

Nice job Karyn, admire you for taking it on. Here in the UK we would also sheath the Earth/Ground wire with green/yellow sheathing as the bare copper earth could potentially trip against a live terminal although to be fair, you did wrap the live terminals around with insulation insulation tape. Man, those metal cable ties were unbelievable, can’t believe any electrician would ever use those!

I have never liked those metal staples. I was working a house construction project back in the late 1980's, and we had all kinds of problems with those staples, from the students driving them too hard into the insulation, to actual metal flashing on the staples themselves (they evidently were made 5' O' clock Friday at the manufacturer) So this meant, in order to be code, all those runs of Romex in that hot attic had to be replaced, and since I was the senior supervisor on the project, guess who was stuck with rewiring everything in the attic for three days.... I've had other adventures like this. I like those plastic insulated staples with the two brads on each end holding the insulator over the cable itself. No metal comes in contact. As for wrapping the terminals inside the junction box, I do the same thing. Especially, when at Sis' house. It was built in the 50's, so all those plug boxes are metal.

I’m so glad Karyn is good at this. Because I’m better at bringing her a drink. And hoping everything goes well. And yes, those staples are evil. You need to smack them with a hammer. And gee.. what could go wrong? And they may work for years before the vinyl slowly migrates away from the metal. Then…. Pop.

Looks like it's time to get mason jars, gulf wax, pectin, sugar and start making grape jam :) For those outlet screws, it may sound like overkill but I've found that a variable speed drill/driver can be most efficacious, just barely pull the trigger and snug them up good. Most nowadays also come with a built-in light which my older eyes very much appreciate. I live in an older-pre WWII home and the former owner loved his Christmas lights as there are apparently more outlets around the outside of the house than there are inside the house but it's all the older boxes with the individual little doors over the outlets outside. Meanwhile half the wiring on the inside of the house is still old-fashioned cloth-covered wire, which is fine as long as it isn't moving around, but with it being that way polarized outlets are useless as there's no way to tell which wire is hot and which is neutral, but it's okay as I have the sense to unplug anything that needs repair on the inside...and if I do need to plug something in while it's apart I simply use an isolation transformer between the appliance and the outlet.

Karyn has had a good deal of fun modeling all of that in 1:20 scale. Cloth wire. Knob and tube insulators! You should see her power meters! She also did a really funny job of wiring the casting machine. The controls of the casting machine are first class. However, we put a bunch of fake meters and stuff on there and she put some glass fuses and burned out wiring, scorched wiring, and all kinds of crazy stuff. People come in there and think that’s functional and just about crap!

@karynfelix-the-Cat
@karynfelix-the-Cat Год назад
The first installation was done by an electrician. He did use conduit for part of the outside installation on that branch circuit up to the junction box, and the part that connected to the storage shed. I am just not sure why the electrician decided to use outdoor-rated wire on the latticework and not use conduit, but rather just use staples. The part of the branch circuit that we replaced is not only outdoor-rated but is in a protected area not exposed to the elements or human contact, so conduit is not really necessary. It also depends on the local electrical code.

OK, so I feel I must correct Mrs. Toy Man on her Electrical skills. She said " I'm not a master electrician ". HHHmmm... lets examine her work, shall we? Yes I think we shall. She knows to pigtail and connect the ground first. (A+)! She knows to pigtail the outlet. Also (A+)! Then she made the shepherdess hook and used the screw terminal instead of the stick in the back of the outlet. Also know as stick it up the outlets *%#$$. Nice job! another (A++)! She even made a drip loop going into the bottom of the box. To top that off She kept the cable from making any sharp bends when exiting the box on top. Also (A+). Then the shocker for me, she mentioned the GFCI ( Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter ) was up stream on the circuit. That's a huge (AAA+++)! As an electrician my self, I was watching closely. I can attest to you that I have seen licensed electricians not get some of those right. I'm not sure just where you picked up your electrical skills, but you done did good work! About the same number of grapes on that vine as you see here mash those with the masher blah blah blah the whole thing. Probably spent $300 on supplies. Ended up with about 15 bottles of wine. And put in maybe two weeks worth of work. My hats off to those people in Napa. Much rather just run down to the wine store rather than hang around the house and whine! But it was an interesting form of screwing around. However, this trucks up to been there done that. Bought the souvenir T-shirt. Moving on to other things.

@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision Год назад
Pig tails. Yup. That’s how the double duplex is wired. The duplex is a normal pass through.
@karynfelix-the-Cat
@karynfelix-the-Cat Год назад
So.. What I used is a method called "pigtailing". This is where 2 sets of wires are used. Two sections of Romex is cut to 8-inch lengths. The outer insulation is stripped from the Romex leaving 3 wires, one black "hot" wire, one white "neutral" wire, and a bare copper wire, "ground". These are called "pigtails". I then stripped the insulation from each end of the black and white wires of about 3/4 of an inch. Each wire gets a hook on one end and the other end is left straight. Each outlet gets a set of pigtails (6 wires total) which are fastened to the bottom terminals of the receptacle using hooks around the binding screw. Silver binding screws are neutral white; brass binding screws are black hot, bare copper is attached to the green screw for the ground. Each set of wires is attached with 3 separate wire nuts: Neutral to neutral, hot to hot, and ground to ground. The load line (live line, or first wire connecting the branch circuit) is connected to the top terminals of the receptacle on my right. This will provide power to all 4 receptacles, plus the single receptacles at the far end of the branch circuit. When the circuit was powered on at the breaker, note that we did test the outlets for the correct wiring. I did get 2 green lights indicating that the wiring is correct. I also mentioned that there are different methods of wiring a duplex outlet box. I prefer using the pigtail method. I also prefer to use the binding screws to connect the power rather than the "stab-back" connections on the back of the receptacle... especially on outdoor electrical outlets!

Oh yes, and the home major appliance voltage for electric cooking stoves, water heaters, etc., is 240 VAC.

Awww… We just use the term 110 when referring to outlets and lighting, and 220 to refer to the wiring for large appliances like electric ranges and water heaters. Most folks only care if the lights come on and the water is warm when they take a shower! LOL!
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision Год назад
Yup. Everyone calls it 110. At least they do around here. Here’s the thing, though I don’t think very many people have any idea how much variation there is in the line voltage. Down at my recording studio. we had gauges on the line filters and the filter voltage usually showed right around 110. Sometimes as high as 115. Never 120. Occasionally as low as 90 or so for a split second. It just sort of depends on what loads there are on the circuits. The only thing really really consistent is the frequency. And even that will vary slightly. But over the course of a day, it will always equal exactly 60. If it goes slightly high, they will make up for it by going slightly low. And by slightly I mean in the hundredths of 1%. But it’s really astonishing how much the line voltage will change. I think in calling it 120 they’re simply saying it will never be higher than that. And in fact, the goal will be to maintain that.

Actually, that outlet is okay, as the plug and the resultant load that fits is rated to draw only 15 amps, a 20 amp plug has one slot rotated 90degrees. Yeah, conduit would be preferred, but there is a reason that the grey cable is rated outdoor use, cause it is.
