One sign of a great bassist is when a lone guitarist can step out and ake a solo with no backing rhythm track and it doesn't sound like the heaviness disappeared. Rex delivered this like no other. Tim from RATM is another example of this. Many bands record a rhythm track of guitar for this purpose in the studio then when you see them live they sound weak during every guitar solo. Pantera did not have this problem because Rex knew how to craft great bass lines that traveled between the drums and guitar riff while having the heavy crushing tone that held the low end down while having a grinding mid range.
@zakarhaavevuo2574

I don't think Rex is underrated. Anyone who knows their Pantera knows that he is a true monster on the bass. Huge tone, lines mean AF and a tight, TIGHT player. Gotta put on some tunes now😎

@@dankhill6851 It's very easy for the bassist to overplay and step all over the tune. The greats know when to step out with the drums and push the rhythm or stay in the background and carry the song. Rex liked to compliment the vocals as well with his bass playing, you can hear it in songs like This Love and Floods. Not every bassist needs to play like Jaco.

@_SliK_
@_SliK_ 2 года назад
@@jesseolson3142 I think it’s that the bass was buried in the mix, for obvious reasons, as it was hard for it to cut through the guitar tone. I was once asked a number of years ago who IMHO had the loudest BASS rig. Without hesitation I advised that this would be as follows: Old school Rex Brown new school John Campbell. Rex had the enviable task of keeping up with Dime and Vinnie and had zero issues doing so. Rex always had the timing that was needed to keep the Pantera groove working. I must agree with Petey Grizz, it is about damn time that Rex Brown was RECOGNIZED for his efforts.

@@WhichBass I gave it some thought. Tony Levin for his different tones and applications of the bass. Or Pino Palladino because he’s hard not to love.

I can't wrap my head around the change. Because when asked how he thought about Warwick's after being endorsed he went "It joyous it's fucking amazing" lol.

real good info Alfie , I sure wish I had a Specter bass to play around with. Alfie I stopped receiving all notifications from all my subscribed videos from you tube about two weeks ago , I click the bell in the top right corner to find new videos , I will be looking for part 2 , much thanks.

Hey Mark good to see you again. Man, I wish I had a Spector too, those things are so unique. I'm not sure whats up with YT notifications, I made sure all my subs were to be notified on the release. I do hear other channels have the same issues. The games the YT gods play is a joke ... Part 2 will be a week or 2 so don't check back every day XD

When many were saying "metal is dead" Pantera came into the scene to prove them wrong. It really pisses me off how things ended for this awesome band.

Awesome video, I really enjoyed it! One of my all time faves :) I didn't read all of the comments so sorry if this has already been covered but the tuning printed on the back of the headstock toward the end of the video looks to me like it's a 5 string with all strings tuned down one and a half steps from standard. Great depth and research on this vid, nice work...Cheers!
@WhichBass
@WhichBass 4 года назад
Thanks Scott, some had suggested it's a tuning in 5th's but I couldn't say for sure. Sounds like it could be.

Another 80’s bassist? Dude let that era go. If your gonna go back in time do Jamerson, McCartney, J.P.Jones but there’s a lot of good bassist that are currently still making relevant music if u wanna put this channel up to date. Here’s some suggestions Wolstenholme (muse), Greenwood (radiohead), Keeler (death from above 1979). This is still one of my favorite, if my favorite channels on RU-vid and I appreciate all your hard work on making these.

Awesome awesome video and content! Subscribed and 'belled'(?) Pantera is one of my all time favorites. I always felt Rex is such an underappreciated bass player so it's great to see this stuff about him!

Thank you for your devotion to this special instrument, the Bass! If you are up for the task, I recommend doing a Steve DiGiorgio video. An amazing bass player that have contributed to amazing bass lines in bands like Sadus, Death, Iced Earth, Testament, Quo Vadis, etc, etc. Great videos and research!
