Well, I made it to 60 never having seen this, I would have laughed my head off 25 years ago. Age has softened me and after watching it about 5 times, I'm able to say....eh, why not!
63 here. Still looks awful and over the top to me. To each his or her own. I always thought that he was prettier than he was a good singer. Kind of the William Shatner of pop.
For me the most outstanding and best version of everlasting love. And voices together simply great and amazing. Absolutely unbeatable duet. Just WOW even after all these years❗💕🎶
One of the most underrated vocal mega singers from the 80’s he had the looks and the voice, but sadly some poor management or just bad advice. He should’ve gone way further than he did. Incredible talent
@@hollyprincipato3287 actually Carl remade it also...this song has been covered so many times it's hard to keep count, but this is the only duet version that I can remember other than Rex and Marilyn McCoo sang it together when they both hosted Solid Gold
@@Defensewhiz Robert Knight did it originally in September 1967. The Love Affair took it to #1 in the UK in May 1968 (never released in the US as a single), David Ruffin in January 1969 (also never released as a single), Carl Carlton in 1974 (peaking at #6), this version in September 1981 (peaking at #31), Sandra (then Lauer, now Cretu) in 1987 that was a Top 5 hit in Europe (never released in the US), U2 in 1989 (as a B-side), World's Apart in 1993 (never released in the US) and Gloria Estefan in January 1995 (peaking at #30).
@@WaltGekko yes I knew most of them already especially Robert, the original singer, and then Love Affair as well as Carl and Gloria. Like I said it’s been covered about a million times, and yet I like this one by Rex and Rachel more than the original by Robert as well as love affair’s version because it being a longer duet while still being uptempo
Her problem was the massive changes in radio in New York when she was recording. New York at that time often still determined whether a song would become a hit even though there was no legit Top 40 station in New York from July 1981 (when WABC began softening their music format ahead of a flip to talk on May 10, 1982) and August 2, 1983 (when WHTZ-FM, Z-100 at 100.3 made its debut and shortly after WPLJ at 95.5 completed a slow flip from Rock to Top 40 over the spring and summer of 1983). This allowed such infamous song's as Sneaker's 1982 hit "More Than Just The Two of Us" to become a Top 40 hit (peaking at #34) and as I remember be a Top 3 hit in New York ALMOST ENTIRELY off excessive airplay on WNBC (known to have a program director known as "Kenny" in Howard Stern's 1995 autobiographical film, "Private Parts" who for some time had a VERY restrictive playlist which showed up on WNBC's year-end countdown for 1982 when it finished ahead of The Human League's "Don't You Want Me" that was a #1 song nationally). Even WAPP-FM (103.5) debuting in late June 1982 as a Top 40 station didn't stem this because it was not looked at as a legit Top 40 station and the closest otherwise was WYNY-FM (97.1), which really was adult contemporary (the stations famously after format flips switched positions on the dial in 1988). That is what hurt Rachel musically.
Hearing this song again in the video itself brings me as a Gen-X'er back to '81 when I was only six years old and was thinking to myself how I wanted to celebrate my own marriage one day in such a musically joyous way. God, do I miss that decade, because the millennium was a real letdown.
You must be 1 year older than me. I was 5 in 1981. I have never seen this video until now. Also the millennium wasn't the only let down. The 1990s also was. How bad that decade was I knew the millennium wouldn't be any better
It will always be one of the world's biggest mysteries the ultra talented Rachel Sweet wasn't a huge superstar. Gorgeous and that big booming voice. She must have had the worst management in the world.
@@donaldfewell8908 Eh..but he did have a lot of success for a period, with it seemed like another hit song and he hosted Midnight Special I think. But Rachel had supreme talent.
Much of Rachel Sweet's problem was bad timing: Her music got virtually NO airplay in New York, which often determined hits because of a major transition at the time as Disco stations dominated the ratings then. WABC (77 AM) the longtime Top 40 kingpin was softening its format in as last ditch effort to remain a music station before going talk on May 10, 1982. WNBC (66 AM) had a PD (see my other comment on this) that was very conservative and there was no true Top 40 station in NYC until August 1983.
@Robin LOL! At the risk of sounding conceited, I was also a hottie back in 1979 when Smith got famous. Now for the most part I've morphed into your description of him today.
Hi how are you doing, how is your day going... Hope the weather is treating you well? I hope you don't mind, I'm really looking forward to having a chat with you if that is okay with you!
Rex- hotter than hellfire! Rachel-cute as a button! Both of them ridiculously talented! I truly can’t decide whose voice I love most here!!! Beautiful version!!! The best! I will never forget when I saw him in “Sooner or Later”when I was a young teenager. Be still my heart!❤️
Rex was my first celebrity crush. I thought he was gorgeous, talented, and sexy as hell. I'm so happy that all of this was saved for me to enjoy another day on youtube! Bless you Rex!
Have you watched the movie Sooner or Later. I watched almost two weeks non stop he is extremely handsome. I've check Wikipedia and he did not do to much after that movie back then. I think he was enjoying being a teen idol. And he's not even rich. I thought his acted and singing were great in the movie for being his first.
He’s did quite a bit on Broadway, too- grease, pirates of penzance with Linda ronstadt and Kevin Kline, sunset boulevard, scarlet pimpernel… He also did lots of tv like Jag, love boat, perry Mason, as the world turns. He had his own show night Hawk and took over solid gold after Andy gibb. He’s so talented; I never understood why he wasn’t as big as David Cassidy!
@@aerostar9376 Right, originally for Robert Knight, who had the original version in September 1967, followed in England the following spring by The Love Affair (where it went to #1 in May 1968 but was never released in the US because it was too soon after Knight's version), David Ruffin in January 1969 (never released in the US), Carlton in '74 (biggest hit version in the US), this version, then Sandra (Cretu) in 1987 (in Europe, never released in the US), U2 in 1989 (as a B side), Worlds Apart in 1993 (never released in the US) and Gloria Estefan in early 1995.
These 2 DID A Wonderful JOB on this GREAT SONG, what they did is a HARD THING to DO. Holding your own with LOVE AFFAIR (1968) and CARL (1974) IS SOMETHING to Be PROUD of!
OMG I been wanting to find the mistery man to this voice. .i remember watching you back on TV and i was so amazed how beautiful you sang . You stolen a 7 year old heart that day. Im so glad i found you and your music

This Song reminds me of the time while working in Saudi Consolidated Electric Company in the Eastern Province in Dammam. Sometimes we visit our friends in Jubail for a Weekend Party (Sadiki local alcoholic drinks). While on the way we play this Song on a Cassette Tape. A very unforgettable experience in the Middle East. 🥃🥃

This guy is amazing and outta sight.i enjoyed this.i was born in 1975.i remember that show street hawk he did.i recently got the trial of the incredible hulk on dvd.he was perfect as Matt Murdock and daredevil.rex Smith sure is gifted.
Casey Kasem's American Top 40 comes to mind whenever this song is mentioned. That's where I first heard it in 1981. It's up there with REO Speedwagon and Rick Springfield.
I will never tire of listening to this work of art if I have the fortune to get married I would like to sing this song I love her too much and I will keep listening to this song until the day I die.❤❤❤
It's my first time to watch this music video & I fell in love with them,Rex & Rachel. She has a very beautiful voice. I wonder if she's still active in the music scene. Jan 2,2021
Because of 2nd lockdown here in UK, I just watch Rex Smith film Sooner or Later which reminds me during my younger life on mid 70's. I had lovely moments at that time....hmmmm ...those were the days. Thanks ever so much for sharing this beautiful song of him.

I forgot about Rex Smith. I remember my mom playing his songs as a kid. Especially this one. And seeing him in The Pirates of Penzance and Street hawk.
If I had to pick the best five music videos of all time, this song would make it. The best version by far and one of the best music videos I have ever enjoyed.
I've watched this for years and just now noticed tiny Rachel was standing on a box most of the time! Good grief she was a talented and beautiful girl. And she gave such a great, sassy performance here. Just a stunning lady.
She could sing like that at 6 years old. Her father tried to manage her and signed her to Stiff Records who didn't know how to market her. Too bad. She did go on to become a successful television producer.
@@jenicebeatty4605 Though she eventually made it anyway and REALLY hit it big behind the camera with "Hot in Cleveland." Her problems had to do with changes in radio in New York from July 1981-August 1983 that caused a lot of songs that should have been much bigger hits not to be and some songs infamously becoming Top 40 hits because of New York's influence.
Oh I had almost forgotten this guy. I would love to run off into the sunset with him. Is the girl singing with him, I want to say her name is Rachel Sweet? It's been many years since I heard this. Love it.
Rachel Sweet may not have been the best singer I've heard, but by FAR she is NOT the worst. As I look at a lot of singers today. They need to take a lesson from these two. The morale filth that I see today, Miley Cyrus, Chardi B, Ariana Grande, and God only knows else is pathetic. This is a a delightful and heart warming video. NO twearking, No foul language and no violence. And yes I think its cute.

WOW. I certainly loved that !! But what happened to the "ceremony" ?? Gives a bride & groom something to think about for a wedding !!!!! This though, really kicked in !!!!!!!!!!!! Thumbs UP !!!

The best versions of this tune are still the original by Robert Knight, the 1968 cover by Love Affair (featuring the incredible Steve Ellis on lead vocals) and the 1974 cover by Carl Carlton. Have a listen to those three versions and then see if you still think the Rex Smith/Rachel Sweet duet and U2's version are even worth remembering.
