This little lens never stops impressing me. I once shot an entire wedding using only the 35mm, and the results came out great! The stabilisation is also wonderful, both for stills and video. Paired with the R5, 1 second hand held exposures is no problem at all. And at F1.8 that's good enough for hand held shots in nothing but moonlight! I absolutely love being able to do that without carrying a tripod.

I did a wedding only with a 35 as well. It was for a friend and I really didn't want to shoot it - so I said I'll do it but only with one lens (nikon 35mm f2 d) and only in black and white (just wanted to do it) they said yes - they loved it - who'd have known 😆👍

@@darintaylor8761 Canon's got an EF mount 35mm f/2 that will work for your camera, however this one she's using here is an RF mount for Canon's R series camera bodies. T8i natively supports EF-S and EF lenses and Sigma, Tamron and Rokinon/Samyang all make great 3rd Party lenses for our Canon camera's if you're looking for something particular.

I’m glad to hear this! I just ordered this lens as an alternative to my 24-70 2.8. I love that lens and I still plan on bringing it with me to weddings, but I hurt my back and have been looking for lightweight options!

That's what I love about the RF system. These affordable lenses (35, 85) are much sharper than the Sony equivalents, and have IS and macro to boot.

I have had this lens for not too long. I use it for weddings mostly on my R6 but its also a great casual lens for my RP too when I'm doing personal shooting.

I know it's a very late post. But now only I got a chance to get my hand's on the Canon RF 35mm f1.8 and it was pretty impressive. I normally do portraits and I liked the versatility. It's small size and less weight matters most. The picture is so sharp. I think this is the best lens for the budget as it covers the wide and the macro functionalities. And thanks Julia for your inspiring videos.

Thank you!! It was a little bit weird at first going from DSLR to mirrorless but if you were already looking to get a new camera I personally think mirrorless is the way to go. There are so many benefits that make shooting easier!

@@Kabukicabbage I kind of answered this in my other response to your comment! My main camera is the Sony A7iii and I came from being a Canon 5D4 shooter. Both brands are great, make sure to look at all your potential lens options, it might help you decide!

I am really excited for the RF 35 1.2 and 35 1.2 DS! Planning for the DS to be the next lens I buy - love the 85 DS, and it pairs perfectly with the 28-70, as it’s letting in similar amounts of light - I love the unique look, but another thing I love about the DS is that you can shoot at 1.2 comfortably in full daylight (great for weddings etc)... on my EF 85 even shooting at 100 ISO, And 1/8000 1.2 could still be letting too much light in

@Cristian Rodriguez it’s insane, bro. I love my EOS R, but the cost of weather sealed shit really makes me wish I went Fuji instead. But you’re right. Hopefully soon 3rd party companies will start dropping some bargain bombs. That Samyang RF85F1.4 is dope.

Thank you for shooting with this combo. It's great to see you using Canon gear. I thought we lost you to Sony forever. ;-) This shoot makes me want to keep my RF 35 f/1.8 for a while longer because I have been tempted by the Sigma Art 35 f/1.4 and The Tamron SP 35 f/1.4. I would be curious to see something with the R6 and the RF 85 f/2. The RF 85 f/1.2 is fantastic without question, but not everyone can spend over $2,700 USD on one lens.

i would choose this rf 35mm just because of the macro capability and close focusing distance of 6.9 inches vs of that of sigma around 11 inches and they're all tie when you shot everything in f2.8 or f4; but if you have the budget, i suggest going with the tamron sp 35mm f1.4 it's faster and latest lenses from tamron and dont forget the adapter.

Noobie question - how did you get her face so well illuminated in that back light scene? Usually subjects look super dark with sun behind them, and I dont see a reflector or flash anywhere. …unless the lady with the white shirt is acting illuminator 😅

I wish Canon would come out with their L Series 35 for the RF system. In the meantime, this looks like a great option for a travel lens or day to day casual shooting when I don't want to lug along heavy lenses/gear. Can you tell me how does this lens compare to the EF 35 F 1.4 Version II (Which I currently own) ?

Imo this lens alone makes the Canon RP + this lens a serious competitor against APS-C mirrorless cameras for power in a very portable and cheap package. It's kinda crazy how cheap the EOS RP is for such a small but capable full frame camera and this lens paired with the RP makes it an absolute powerhouse. And not to mention it's even got macro capabilities? Just insane. And I'm saying all this as a Fujifilm user!

Hi Julia, Great video and so useful as always. What are your thoughts on this lens vs sigma 35 1.4? Sigma is heavier, has some AF issues but the images, micro contrast and bokeh is very good.. few used ones in my area I got the RF lens but tempted to switch over despite advantage of IS, lightness, and macro. Thank you! I’ve been watching your videos for years! 🇨🇦

@@juliatrotti Awesome! Definitely excited to see that video. Personally my focus is more on focal length/aperture differences but I know some people are very into minute quality differences. I think a lot of people are most likely choosing between the 35/85 combo or just the 50 so honestly anything comparing them would be super helpful. Thanks for your reply!

Hi, great photos and video. Can I ask do you think there is much difference between the R6 & R5 ? I know there’s double the pixels, but I’m thinking of buying the R6 and wondered if I’d be missing out on much from the R5 ? I prefer the Canon RF 85 mm f2 lens or even the focal length of over 100 mm for portraits because it does not distort.

Hi Julia, What camera setting did you use in the R6 cos the unedited pics are equally good. The picture style, any WB shift etc. Else I find R6 raw files are more flat than those from 5D series camera. Appreciate your sharing.

Hey, when I do camera/lens reviews I never do WB shift and I had this camera on standard/normal picture profile (can’t remember which one it’s called) but essentially nothing. If I do use WB shift for my work, I normally bring it a little more into the pinks. I think the colours look really good SOOC because of our locations/outfits, etc, everything was just really neutral on the day!

I honestly hardly ever use it this way - this might be the first time a flip screen has come in handy for a weird angle 😅😅 I have a bad feeling the A74 will have an articulating screen but I really wish it wouldn’t. I prefer the tilt! I use it way more

Would you recommend this lens for my M50 it’s crop frame? So I guess if I want the same feel I’d need which lens again?

This lens would look like a 50mm on a crop frame, if you want the same look as a 35 then you would need a 24 instead 😊 you can take a look at my crop frame vs full frame video or my all prime lenses on crop frame to get a better idea/see what’s right for you!
