#105 In this video I look at some of the proprieties of AM radio. In particular what the transmitted signal looks like both in time domain and frequency domain. From there its just one more step to see what an efficient AM radio signal would look like.

First time I see SSB simulated with LTSPICE. Really excellent. Thanks

Great stuff thanks, I knew a bit about SSB but didn't realise why AM consumer radios didn't operate on it.

Nice. I went ahead and built my transmitter using common emitter and common base amps. One for AM and the other for FM. My lab is a mess I can't even muster the will to fix it. Not much going on lately. Let's play with modulation schemes. QAM 4 or PSK 4. Let's make it challenging, 433MHz. I'm too lazy to do it. I'll give you a like if you do it though ❤️. I've got one of those discovery things, never used it. Got some SDR stuff, but soon they'll be out of support. Used them for SAT weather stuff. living in a 3rd world country sucks the energy out of you. Haven't built anything meaningful in a year. I think this is the final slump and no way back from this one. Do more modulation vids. I love those.

One interesting way to build transmitters is by using the digital output of a microcontroller or FPGA.

I guess 8VSB is the closest to a single sideband type efficiency it gets in commercial broadcast (USA).

That was very informative. What is the efficiency FM modulation, or does this not apply to FM? I've always been curious, what does Fesz mean?

This is mainly an AM related topic, the equivalent of SSB is not really used with FM to my knowledge, but I may be wrong. With AM you need a lot of power when transmitting to counteract background noise, but with FM, the transmission is far more immune, so you can get away with lower powers without having to rely on this sort of tricks. "Fesz" is an abbreviation of my nickname and surname.

Remember how father showed me how to make an AM radio and we had AM back then. We connected the ground to one of our central heating radiators :) We don't have AM anymore :(

I'm sorry to hear that... I guess you only have the amateur radio bands with mostly SSB AM. May I ask in what country you live in?

@@FesZElectronics Belarus, I guess I should be able to hear your transmitter at night, it not that far away (about 1000Km) :) not without an amplifier of course.

Regarding possible stations you could listen to I found this website: radiomap.eu/by/minsk ; according to this (for the capital at least) it should be possible to receive some Polish and Lithuanian broadcasts - those are closest. But probably a basic crystal radio will not really pick anything up...

yep good video, if you only got 100watts of tx power, SSB makes alot more sense than AM. SSB puts all that 100watts in one side of 3khz voice bandwidth. clock accuracy is critical for ssb to sound good.

Looking at your scope, 800x480 is WGA resolution. WVGA is 768x480 (according to Wiki)

What's the name of those nice 90 degree adapters you use between your probes and the scope input? Makes things very tidy!
@FesZElectronics
@FesZElectronics 11 месяцев назад
I'm not sure if they have a special name other than "90 degree adapter" or "right angle adapter"; you can find this sort of thing either for BNC or SMA (or N connectors if that is needed); If it helps, here is an order code for such product: 27-8150

Have you ever tried making ferrite cores from epoxy? I got the idea after I noticed how magnetic JB Weld is.
@FesZElectronics
@FesZElectronics 3 года назад
To be honest I have not tried that. Although I do remember another viewer saying they made magnetic cores from ferrite and glue with good results. Anyway I don't think I can even get JB weld in my country, or at least its not easily available.

@@FesZElectronics I hear ya. I think the other brands with metal would be a good alternative. And epoxy putty is also magnetic.

Not to spoil the fun ... But Measuring SSB power using a single tone ... will give you nothing , try multitone or even better , try noise . MW signals can travel great distances and when they get there they need to be at an amplitude that is above the noise floor in that location . Digital transmissions vill never be able to do that , the amplitude is to low to be above the noise floor at anything over few hundred Km . The real reason why AM must die has nothing to do with going green or efficiency , it is more to do with politics and opinion shapping that the owners of the mass media in your area want you to have . There are thousants of 100KW or more devices in my town going up and down the street on 4 wheels and emiting only smoke . Also speach on SSB can be inteligible if you have a good rig but is never pleasant . Music ..... huh . I listen almost daily to some AM stations that are 2000 Km away from me , in UK 1458 and 1548 KHz, mainly for the music , but also for the lack of BS news . 85 FM stations that I can recive at my location do create a fake impresion of choice , duplicates fromm other towns , latest and " greatest " music , and parroting the same " news " of eachother . I will be a sad day when AM will be taken behind the barn , and mainly because because it has the potential to run interference on some power group of interests that owns the radios in yous area .

"Digital transmissions vill never be able to do that , the amplitude is to low to be above the noise floor at anything over few hundred Km ." Dude… Morse and Beaudot telegraphy is a proto-form of digital transmission, the binary signal allowing a high tolerance to noise with narrow filters. Radiotelex is still used worldwide for long distance maritime communications. Modern digital transmissions now uses checksums and data reconstruction to be even better immune to noise as well as interferences. You also forgot that the propagation distance is a factor of the frequency, the power emitted and the antennas. AM is great for electronics beginners but it's already been many decades that PM and FM reception was affordable for the mass and as a result that most commercial stations turned off their AM broadcasting, even the international SW ones. Next is the turn of analog in favor to digital, like TV. And like TV, broadcasting will disappear because of internet, because of the way less vertical media consumption and because actual computers allows us hundreds of hours of listening in the palm of our hands.
