In this video I make my first attempt at direction finding the awful RFI that is plaguing my ham radio station. I'm using an MFJ-852 AC Line Noise Meter along with an Icom IC-705 and Tape Measure Yagi-Uda antenna.
There is still much work to be done...

A blind ham friend had a noise problem. He called PECO (Philly Electric Co) and figured the call would go into the garbage can. My friend was surprised when he received a call back and a technician set up an appointment for the next day. The tech came over at the appointed time, listened to the noise and said it was definitely electrical. He left to search for the source and called back an hour later saying he found a high voltage primary line off its insulator a couple of block over. The tech put in a work order and it should be repaired in a day or two. It was and noise gone. In the process of finding the annoying noise, a safety problem was found and fixed.

People love to instantly blame the pole pigs when in fact, in the great majority of cases, power line RFI is caused by one or more of these situations: Failing insulator Damaged lightning arrester Loose staples on ground conductor Loose pole top pin Ground conductor touching nearby hardware Corroded slack span insulators Guy touching neutral Loose hardware Bare tie wire used with insulated conductor Insulated tie wire on bare conductor Loose cross arm braces Very rarely is a pole pig the cause of RFI!

Glad you’ve found the offending pole and they should do everything possible to eliminate it!! 73, AI4BI

Most other youtubers I've seen don't go this far, this is awesome. I was a networks officer on a utility in Australia for a while. Also a Ham now. I love watching these videos that actually go out and track down where the source of the RFI is coming from. Most of the time its from power utility equipment, poles and wires. I have heard of faulty solar panels and phone chargers but never got to see any, so I was sceptical. There's usually an underlying issue on the utilities side.

If equipment starts sputtering out random RFI and noise, is that a sign the device is failing ? Water getting into it or something ? If so, maybe linemen could have small portable RFI detectors to listen to the poles & equipment to hear if there is a problem ?
@jeromepace9768
@jeromepace9768 2 года назад
@@SeaJay_Oceans not necessarily. The equipment could be failing such as a transformer going bad but also there are tons of things that could be loose. When things heat up and cool down the metal expands and contracts. Aluminum is worse but copper still does it. This causes connections to be loose. The clamps that connect the wire from the transformer to the primary wire can get loose which is a big cause of noise. It could be a cracked or really dirty insulator or the tie that holds the primary to the insulator. The majority of linemen aren’t going to spend the money to get a detector and companies usually have one with someone that goes around to complaints. I make sure all connections are tight and everything is in good order on every pole I work on because it also saves a trouble call later for power issues. Most causes of rfi can be heard audibly and we fix those when we hear them. But until we go to that pole we won’t know unless someone makes us aware. So if you have any noise, contact your power company as soon as possible.

It could a number of things from a transformer, pole top insulator with a tie, deadend shoe or insulator and shoe, missing ground. Had a customer for the power company I work for call in an RF complaint, upon my arrival found transformer issue and primary ridge pin insulator was tied in. With another crew we replaced the transformer and pole top insulator but didn’t replace 2 double deadend shoes which could have been contributing to the problem. With the two upgrades his noise dropped by 2 S-Units. He was happier and now I made a new friend that wants to go out and POTA.

Great job, Mike! Hopefully the electric company can get on that quickly. Especially since you've done most of their research for them. Decades ago we were having intermittent static issues on our land line that made the phone unusable (pre-cellphone days). I called AT&T on that line and the lady on the other end could barely hear me. Sent a tech out within the hour. He put a 'hot box' on our pole and found the problem a block away. Seems a squirrel had chewed through the insulation. Quickly corrected and never had problems again.

Good video Mike. As stated, it's many times not even close to your antenna. In my case, I used a Sony IC-7600 portable short wave radio. In AM mode at about 150 MHz, I was able to track the noise down to a pole a few blocks from my QTH. It was the connector from a transformer to the main line. The power company sent out a tech who didn't have specialized equipment, so being able to show him where the problem was made for a quick fix. The SW radio worked excellent. Changing frequencies allowed me to find the frequency where the noise was the loudest. I like the MFJ tracker, but I think most people if they have a portable radio will do just fine using it, even a little AM pocket radio will work in many cases. If you find you are having trouble, then maybe a more specialized piece of equipment like the MFJ you showed would be the way to go. I went from an F-8 noise floor to an F-2. I tried a yagi with my G-90 and found I had better luck with the SW radio. Whatever works, get out there and hunt down that noise. Be sure to get the pole number and ask for the tech to meet you at the location. The guy sent out was excellent and very willing to fix it....and he did.

@wd8dsb
@wd8dsb 2 года назад
Hi Don, what band is your noise on that you're trying to locate, and are you using a preamp with your NoiseLoop (not talking about the preamp in your radio but an external preamp with at least 20 dB of gain)? You should be able to hear and thus track down almost any RFI with the NoiseLoop with preamp that you hear on your main radio with normal gain antenna unless the RFI is just above what would be considered a very low noise floor.
@don_n5skt
@don_n5skt 2 года назад
@@wd8dsb Every HF band basically and no preamp.
@wd8dsb
@wd8dsb 2 года назад
@@don_n5skt Hi Don, thanks and that explains a lot. My Portable Flag (which is what DX Engineering calls their NoiseLoop) was designed to be used with a preamp that has at least 20 dB of preamp gain, and this is in addition to any preamp you have in your radio because the preamps in modern HF radios really do not provide extra gain, they just allow you to reduce the normal amount of gain required to have typical receiver sensitivity (example: 0.2 uV sensitivity). Older HF rigs had preamps in them to provide normal sensitivity but you could not turn the preamps off (example: my 44 year old Kenwood TS-180s has a sensitivity of 0.15 uV and it does not have a preamp you can turn on and off). Don't know if you read the original article about my Portable Flag (March 2021 issue of QST), and suggest you check it out if you have not as it has a brief section talking about preamps for use with my Portable Flag. With a 20 dB preamp I can hear all but the very weakest of signals using my Portable Flag on the lower bands like 160 and 80 meters, and on 40 through 10 meters I can pretty much hear anything above a typical low noise floor. Also when trying to hear power line noise make sure your using AM mode with a wide filter selected, and turn off all noise blanker technology. Feel free to E-mail me anytime you want to discuss in more detail. 73, Don (wd8dsb)
@don_n5skt
@don_n5skt 2 года назад
@@wd8dsb Oh, I get it now. I have the portable antenna from DX Engineering (DXE-NOISELOOP) built and it works fantastically well. I was receiving signals on it the minute I built it. I did not get the 20db preamp as both those radios have preamps but I have not turned them on. When I have used it to look for noise, I hook it to my IC-705 or 6100. Either show strong regular signals but not much on the noise front. Much like my Loop on the Ground does.
@wd8dsb
@wd8dsb 2 года назад
@@don_n5skt Hi Don. Great, and I just looked in the IC-705 manual and sure enough on the HF bands it looks like you should be using Preamp 1 for maximum sensitivity and it says in CW mode the sensitivity is 0.20 uV when Preamp 1 is on, but that's what any good radio should provide. When using small receive loop antennas that all have negative gain you need even more preamp, so if you want to use your NoiseLoop to direction find RFI you really need your internal preamp on, and you also need to be using a 20 dB external preamp gain when you first start off, and then start backing off on the preamp gain and maybe even turn off the preamps and start using attenuation as you get very close to the source of RFI. 73, Don (wd8dsb)

Great video...had a similar situation many years ago in our city that had a municipal power company. A power sub station about 1/4 mile away was killing me on 10 meters. If by chance one of the engineers was a HAM. We met after several calls and found 2 bad insulators and a bad cabinet switch. Within a week ALL GONE...so you can get a resolve... Paul K1YOU

@@hamradiotube Totally could be.. High powered HID lights are notorious leakers. There is a flashing yellow street light that I pass everyday that I can hear flashing over my cars AM radio.

wonder if rtl-sdr with rf analyzer app and usb-A cable would work?

Is there any regulation about electrical installations in the US? There should be, not directed specifically to amateur radio, but more towards commercial rf use like phones and Wi-Fi. I think your neighbors will be happier with their Wi-Fi

@N5LRZ

OK as far as it goes to locate BUT BUT what and or who do you go to if the noise is coming from the inside of a personal residence.
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube 2 года назад
That would present its own challenges. Short of knocking on their door like a Jehovas witness preaching the good word about amateur radio, there is little you could do. Unless it was grow lights. You could get the cops involved, but there’s very little way to prove that either.

A noisy power transformer means wasted power/money for the power company, so they are interested in fixing any form of power leak.

I also dislike the way apple has set up there cables. You can buy a splitter cable from Walmart. You get audio for headphone and mike.
