RFID Drawer and Cabinet Lock from Ikea (ROTHULT)

I grabbed this cool little RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) lock at Ikea. It's the ROTHULT 23189 and can be found in the lighting section. It works by locking and unlocking the lock by waving an RFID card over it.

Thats pretty cool. My last place used similar things to log changes to settings and lock them out for certain users.

My bank card changes every couple of years. Now the library card is the same one for years. Pretty cool lock.

You could always keep the old card and still use it. Or you could just remove the batteries and it'll reset itself so you can use a different card

FastTech sells a card reader/writer for $16 cad. Scary how cheap the hardware is. I have one of these units however if the battery runs out on mine it will lock so you must listen for the beeps. To alleviate this concern I ran 2 wires from the battery connections to two screws visible outside the cabinet. I'm the only person who knows that if you put 3v across the two screws the lock will be working again to open it.

It would be handy for that little cubby you made for your helmets to keep the squirrels out lol. Or for a secret drawer or cupboard you don't want anyone to get into

You can program it to use one card aside from the ones it comes with, but only one.

I bought two of these for my IKEA cabinet and they randomly beep 3 times for no apparent reason. They beep 5 times when you need to replace the batteries, so it's not that. Anyone else have this experience? It happened last night in the middle of the night. Very annoying.
