These steam locomotives operated on the RFIRT (Ramal Ferrocarril Industrial Rio Turbio), the Rio Turbio Industrial Railroad in Southern Patagonia, Argentina.
The single track system is 750mm gauge and runs 260 kms from the Rio Turbio coal mines situated at the foot of the Andes to the export jetty in Rio Gallegos, Santa Cruz.
The locomotives were constructed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in the 1950s and 1960s and are of Santa Fé type 2-10-2. They hauled trains of more than 50 wagons each carrying 17 tons of coal.
This movie was edited from a VHS tape version of the movie I made in 1996. I have recently discovered the original Video8 tapes and from those I will now create a new movie.
Shortly after these images were captured the aging locomotives were replaced by Romanian diesel units.

Most of them are currently rusting on parts of the rio turbo system. Though none (as far as I can find online) have been scrapped, some are beyond economic repair. Happily though, two locos (numbers 107 and 119, as well as a sentinel steam truck to join them) are seeing restoration for tourist railway use on the rio turbo today. One of the two (119) had it's refurbished boiler returned to the frames in 2015. Apparently (and I only found this out while typing this comment) that 119 has actually returned to service by now, and now 107 and the sentinel are the focus of restoration, while 119 has been out and about.

Hi! Great video!!! By one of those chances: do you remember how many locos were in service by the time you captured these images? BTW: the Romanian locmotives didn't last for very long, and I guess there are only 1 or 2 in service now. Shipping facilities were transferred from Rio Gallegos to nearby Punta Loyola port (a new line had to be built). Steam loco #117 was restored by railfans, and the government that ended in Dec 2015 had ordered restoration of 2 more locos and passenger coaches, in order to provide excursion rides. One loco and some coaches were finished, but I'm not sure about the other. Also, a steam Sentinnel Camel truck from Rio Turbio was also bound to be restored. It's the only survivor of the mine's fleet. I don't know what our new government's plans for the whole project are, since they are not very fond of trains. Best regards!!
