I purchased the practice goose and have appreciated the flexibility it provides for practice and transition to the highland pipes. It also allows for longer practice and tune learning. It really is a good option for any bagpipe student. I would say I would have bought this first than buying just a practice chanter as it offers so many versatile options and is a practice chanter all on its own. Thanks for reviewing it.

I have that adapter you demonstrated that turns my pipes into something like a goose. I block the drones because, as you mentioned, leaving them open caused problems with steadiness and tuning. I tried taking the drones off and plugging the stocks, but it didn't work very well since the symmetry/balance was thrown off. Leaving the drones in place, but blocked off, keeps the feel of the pipes and helps with balance. I'm not sure this set-up is really a "goose" but it is a great supplement to my practice sessions. After seeing this video, I am going to look into the twist trap pipes you demonstrated.

I have an old Crowley set of bag pipes , also a Crowley set of Uilleann pipes, think they were made in the 50s, antiques I would say, my Dad playd both of them, but they are in a bad way and need repair..ps Crowley was an Irish pipe maker. Slainte from EIRE.

Hi Matt, loving your videos, now am confused on what i should do, in the UK the goose pipes are about £200, the practice pipes are about £400 or i could get a full set of Highlands in Blackwood for about £1000, food for thought..
@MattWillisBagpiper
@MattWillisBagpiper 2 года назад
I suggest my student get a practice pipes rather than a goose, as i think the drone is an important part of the piping experience in learning to blow steadily. After one has 10 or so tunes memorized and played accurately on the practice pipes, they should only then move to the highland pipes.

No kidding. The pipe chanter is a 12 gauge. The practice chanter is a .22. Like a .22, it's there to teach you the proper fundamentals and maintain your practice/technique. Without breaking your budget.

Uilleann pipes for a Scottish goose? Can't say I've heard of someone going that direction. It's normally highland pipers picking up the uilleann pipes!

Matt, I trust you are well. I've been following your beginner series on my rg hardie chanter, having had some experience on the fife. I'm really enjoying the challenge of the chanter, but I am surprised you only have 12.5k subscribers! Quality of your videos is of that from a much larger channel! One question, are the McCallum folk pipes quiet enough for use indoors in a residential setting without upsetting the neighbours? Kind regards from UK, Will.
@MattWillisBagpiper
@MattWillisBagpiper 2 года назад
Glad you found the channel! The folk pipes are a step up in volume from a practice chanter, but far, far quieter than highland pipes for certain. If you think your neighbors could handle something a bit louder than the practice chanter, than the folk pipes should be fine. The Twist-Trap practice pipes are about the volume of a practice chanter (as that's what it is), though drones add a bit more volume. As for subscribers, it'd be great to have more, but I'm not sure how many folks out there are interested in the pipes and need this kind of content. But I do keep growing steadily, so I'm not complaining. :)

@@alphar5807 You're ready to be let out in public when you have a good Scotland The Brave. You can come to a good one the faster, at your level of learning, singing lyrics to the tune. Helps with interpretation. For me, that breakthrough was "Bonnie Dundee," both the real lyrics AND the parody lyrics in _Through the Looking Glass._ Before then, I so lacked familiarity with the tune I couldn't make it sound well. It shouldn't really be a minor revelation to a tyro piper that many of their tunes have words -- but I suspect it is unless they were raised by folk singers.

What's the difference between both those chanters you used? The second one felt like it has much more of a sharper, loud "open" sound if that makes any sense? Is there anything to look out for to get the latter?
@alphar5807
@alphar5807 2 года назад
Hi Eddy. The first chanter is the practice chanter that comes included with the goose, fitted with a practice chanter reed. The mouthpiece and chanter can be joined together and used as a standalone practice instrument. The second chanter is a Great Highland Bagpipes chanter, from an actual bagpipe and likely is a cane reed. It will play much louder and require significantly more air as well!

Can any practice chanter reed work and what tuner app do you use?
@MattWillisBagpiper
@MattWillisBagpiper 2 года назад
The red Frazer practice chanter reeds work best in the twist trap practice chanters, though other reeds do work (they just don't tend to tune as well). I tend to use either the BrawTuner or iStroboSoft by Peterson, though there's not too much of a need to fine tune a practice chanter.
