It's Adam Koralik here and today we're discussing a everyone's favorite console, the Commodore Amiga CD32. Recently, I took the time to have the console worked on by my buddy Chris in Indiana, and he decided to update the RGB output on it. Today, we're talking about it. Why? Because we can, that's why.

RU-vid recommended this video. So here's a few notes, I admittedly haven't watched the whole thing. There are some expansion carts that can be plugged into that back that add RGB video output. I have a TerribleFire 328 card for that purpose along with the ability to hook up IDE drives or IDE compact flash adapter stuff to use it like an Amiga 1200. Also there are some ways around PAL/NTSC differences in games with things not displaying or running correctly on the NTSC unit, by doing RGB out and using a mouse hold button combination (hold both mouse buttons when the unit starts up) most games will at least run on the NTSC system. Despite the fact that it wasn't officially released in the US, some of the models do have US rather than CAN in their serial # information.

Might be worth getting a 'Terrible Fire' expansion card for your CD32. A more cost effective modern take on the SX1/SX32 expansions that are very rare and insane money when they come available. More RAM, faster processor and a IDE port, you can take advantage of A1200 games then as well as launching CD32 games from a hard drive, or a cf. 100% agree with it being more of a 16bit-esq experience, I'm an Amiga fan, but it was a poor effort to repackage a a1200 to take on the console market, Commodore should have known after the CDTV and the C64 console failures. Good video!

I disagree about poor attempt. Every single Amiga CD32 was sold fast but it was too little too late to save Commodore. Their ship had sunk already at that point when the system launched. Amiga CD32 had lots of potential but it was never realised as 97% of it's games were just normal disc versions slapped to a CD maybe with a CD Audio added and some odd bonus animation. I hope that homebrew software community will use that potential at some point in the future.

I remember seeing ads in EGM where you could import these. When I was playing my NES and C64 I always lusted after the Amiga computers, so naturally when I was playing my Super Nintendo and Pentium 60 PC, I wanted one of these. Too bad PCs and Apples won the home computer wars. We have to put up with Bill Gates and "Apple People" because of it. I like to think that in some alternate reality everyone is using their Commodore smartphones to post their poltical opinions on Twitter.

Wow, great video. I guess the cool thing with the Amiga CD32 is that you get music and soundfx at the same time whereas with my A600 you had to choose either soundfx or music, you couldn't have both together, or often no music at all.

If I share this on a UK / Europe Amiga enthusiast page, it’ll potentially go nuts 🥜 The Amiga, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC and ZX Spectrum were all massive in Europe while you guys had the NES, C64, Apple II, Atari 400/800 & Tandy CoCo. Similar story with Japan and the MSX, X68000 and a few others. The only real issue is that 80s and 90s teens are now 40-50 years old. Some of the real pros back in the Amiga era are well beyond their 50s now, and aren’t console gamers. This was one of the Amiga CD 32’s drawbacks. They had to win over the people who had migrated over the SNES Mega Drive, or those who stuck with the Amiga, and they couldn’t offer a decent enough product, launch marketing or software library. It looked like a consolised Amiga, because it was. It was the 1200, though - and that’s a very capable system, but as a gamer back then you wouldn’t have known, seeing its games library alongside the 3DO, for example. Once Sega and Sony came along with their next consoles, it was a slow death, and the N64’s 3D focus just made the CD32 look a generation behind. It’s all such an amazing story, 80s & 90s gaming. The 90s were exhilarating, with everyone throwing their hat in the ring and having a try.

Had a Amiga CD32 back in the day, traded my fully loaded Amiga 500 for it, it was a mistake because cd games were expensive and had few improvements over A1200 versions. First game I ever played on CD32 was Microcosm, mindblowing graphics at the time but gameplay sucked.

The Commodore scene (of which Amiga is part) is pretty amazing. These days, you can easily replace your A500's or A1000's Kickstart ROM with the CD32 BIOS if you so desire but also expand the CD32 to the point that it actually becomes a fully working Amiga computer. One of my friends has one but I never got to see it, also because of the current virus.

4:04 It's upsetting that your old SCART scaler doesn't get much love anymore. It still has its benefits. If you're primarily going to be playing or recording 480i or 576i games, there's little incentive to buying a Framemeister over it. Plus there are some practical uses - the HDMI input correctly recognizes 240p coming off PS2 and Wii HDMI adapters and it normalizes odd-ball signals coming off the OSSC and RetroTINK devices. There are also many games that use 240p for gameplay but 480i for the menus. Because the SCART port deinterlaces everything, it never loses sync between resolution changes like the Framemeister and OSSC do.

8:50 Linedoubling 576i? Yeah... If I ever was to get an Amiga CD32 RGB mod, I think I'll just go with the passthrough or your old scaler. Linedoubling just doesn't do it for interlaced video. It gets way too far from the original intended look and you lose half the vertical resolution. And the constant vertical jitter it annoying. With the Framemeister or your old scaler, they buffer the two fields that make up the frame and put them back together again. THAT's how interlaced content should ALWAYS be handled.

I admit I was very curious myself. I had an A1000 and an A1200 but so wanted the CD32 back in college. So it was fascinating seeing someone deal with the issues I would've run into if I ever had. I know you are keeping in collection but would be curious if the various expansion cards for the CD32 to make it a full Amiga. And then if it would be able to run demos through that scart/retrotink/marseille/hdmi setup. So nope. There's a few of us who found it interesting.

Oh no no no... That would had been the smallest of issues for Commodore. They were absolutely GIANTS back in the day. Unfortunately their management was incompetent, they made lots of mistakes after Amiga 3000 like canceling Amiga 500, when it was still their best selling system, Amiga 600, CDTV, console version of C64, buying private jets, astronomical salary for their management (way higher then guys at IBM, Microsoft or Apple had) delaying AGA series of Amigas for a year and so on. The list of mistakes is endless. They were literally throwing money out of the window and then they ran simply out of it and bankrupted. Too bad really. They had the best engineers in the business and winning hardware back in the day. Amiga should have conquered the world but with the management they had, Commodore was only destined to fail.

The CD32 actually IS 4th gen no matter what shyte it says on wikipedia. It's a chopped down A1200 from 1992 and it competed with the Snes and Megadrive / Mega CD the same as the A1200 did in the 4th gen. Commodore went bust in April 1994 and it was discontinued, the Neo Geo CD came out 5 months later in September 1994 (do you see where i'm going with this?) but the bullshit on wiki says that is 4th gen?! how does that work? lol The NGCD was on the shelves at retail up against the Saturn, Playstation and it was even still on sale when the N64 was released in 1996! the CD32 was long gone before any of those were ever released. Commodore even ran billboard ads outside of Sega's HQ because that was the console's competition. At best it's a late entry into the 4th gen and every game released on it works on a 1992 A1200 and most of them were the same games as on the 16bit consoles. It doesn't even have rudimentary 3D cpabilites such as texture mapping that the Jaguar and 3DO had. I own one and like it but 5th gen my arse.
@AdamKoralik

Cool thing about facts is they don't care about your opinion man. Generations are one part timing, one part technology, and one part marketing intentions. You may not like it, but it's a fifth generation regardless if either of us feel like it should be. Edit: to address your point about the NGCD, that was more of a unique issue to the NGCD being a late outlier. It was just a Neo Geo AES with a disc drive.

I have a RetrovisionHD cable for SNES. I use the best display option. On a TV with YPbPr the image quality is as good as on a CRT. You can see this in Pinball Dreams, where the lights are not just points or vectors, but beautifully displayed with interpolation that is used in the image. Instead of what I have with the CD32, I feel that the image is too blurry, if you could display the image from Workbench or even read something. Generally, the French version of the CD32 (without modulator) has an 8-pin Mini DIN output instead of SVIDEO for RGB to SCART. The image quality is excellent. Probably the cleanest RGB to HDMI image I have seen.

Nice video. Always like seeing the CD32 getting some attention :). The output you were able to getlooks real nice. Don't know if you know but there is no need to mod the CD32 to get RGB out. There are several riser cards that attach to the expansion port on the back that add RGB out some add a keyboard connector too. the risers allow for adding expansions like the terrible Fire cards that boost memory and CPU considerably add a hard drive connector. I have both PAL and NTSC versions of the CD32 the power connector on the console is the same for Europe and the US. So you can use the US brick with the PAL version.

RGB signals are on the expansion slot. A simple adapter is enough, no need for internal modification. The port also has signals for an Amiga disc drive, Amiga Keyboard etc. You can turn the thing into a fully featured Amiga 1200. Such adapters were available back in the day.

I think I'm one of the few portuguese people that spent the equivalent of 400 eur plus 250 for the full motion video for a console that was only a port from the Amiga. You couldn't save anything because it was CD only and the controller was a joke but hey it's a rare console nowadays. I'm thinking of connecting to an older LCD Tv with S-Video and audio cables to see how it works.

Glad to see you got the RGB rolling, I was wondering if you'd get time to chase that down after mentioning it a few months back. I can confirm that the Amiga does some let's say "unique" things with its RGB output that can make it an adventure to get working with things made for other RGB-modded consoles/micros. Mainly the csync is odd, IIRC the output levels are slightly over 1A which some devices won't handle and you might need a signal stripper too. I found a source for Amiga 23-pin RGB to SCART cables that have the right resistance to bring the signal down and that actually works with a RetroTINK SCART and TF328 addon with the RGB port on the backplane pretty well as long as you don't use non-15 Khz screenmodes (almost no games do.) I used Amigas exclusively in the 90s so I can't get enough of Amiga gaming and a good CD32 setup is a fantastic way to do that. If you ever want to open the library up the TF328 (I think there's a newer design now with a 68030 onboard too) will get you the full "regular-ass Amiga" (as Joe says over on Game Sack) WHDload library loadable from flash, and there are loaders for most anything you want to play on Amiga these days. Also highly recommend TinyLauncher for the menu frontend to get you into your Amiga games with a quickness when you have beer in hand and are ready to rock an 8-way 1-button joystick into 16-bit nirvana. Love the channel and especially when you cover the fringe stuff, we'll have plenty of time to cover PS5 developments later ;-)

But cool that you got it to work eventually! My Cd32 deserves more love but since I boughy A1200 a few years back and recently a MiSTer it’s mostly collecting dust.

i have been running my CD32 RGB on a Framemeister for a while now without any physical alterations at all. Just buy a terrible fire CPU breakout board (fits in the module slot on the back). This gives you an RGB port that you can buy a cable for. Works perfectly, doesn't hurt the CD32. The CPU board also allows you to play games directly from a compact flash card. Once again no soldering or modifications.

The RGB issue is probably power related. For example, the Amstrad CPC has RGB SCART cables that only work on CRT sets, due to power related issues. There's a powered SCART cable that's been developed, that sorts this out. I guess that the Amiga CD would need a similar device to boost the sync signal, or whichever is lacking.

Nice job!! I have a CD32, NTSC version. I'll follow-up. Thanks for the links!!

The whole idea behind the CD32 was that since it was based on existing Amiga hardware (the A1200 , with lineage going back to the A500) , it would be easier for devs to work with it, as opposed to other consoles which often used specialised hardware. It ended up biting them in the behind , as it meant that devs just ported their old Amiga games over (And most Amiga games were developed for the older A500). All that being said, the idea of building a console around standard PC hardware isn't crazy given that's what modern systems do (albeit a PS5 isn't just a PC, it is more custom than that)

Guess I must be one of the 8. Got an NTSC system with a weird modem attachment for online banking. I wouldn't call the system region locked, though there are compatibility issues, apparently you can tell the system to boot into PAL mode if you have an Amiga mouse and hold down both buttons on boot. Still trying to get my hands on an Amiga mouse to test this out. I've got several games though, and a bunch of demo discs. It's about 50/50 on whether they play correctly or not.

The booting method you're talking about doesn't change the region coding, just if it displays in 50 hz or 60 hz.

The Amiga CD32 got me into collecting retro-game consoles. I was really into video games and consoles in the nineties, played Jaguar and Philips cd-i and read a lot about the 3do but had never heard about this one when a saw it at a retro game show here in Sweden 6 years ago. I started collecting other early cd-based consoles since the CD32 was hard to find and expensive but one year later my dad won one for me on a swedish auction site CIB scandinavian version bought in Sweden for approx 120 in usd. So this video was nice to watch and if it will be a solid RGB mod in the future i'm interested :-)

That's what I was thinking about! Gotta play the definitive version of LOOM on OG hardware. :P

You can't add RGB to the FMT Marty. The graphics chip pin out only has luma and chroma... Which is why it tops out at svideo

Commodore made interesting hardware, the Amiga CD32 is incredibly expandable, it's basically an Amiga computer with a CD drive bolted on to it

My last new console was the Xone, not interested in series x or ps5, modern gaming is just not my thing. Though I do have a switch but im loving my DS and modded GBA too and love my modded wii u.

As a Brit it’s great to see this, I had an Amiga 500 and they were a badge of pride in the early 90s! My cousin got a CD32 and I was really envious... your videos actually help with our memories as well as our nostalgia. Great work Adam

Adam likes collecting and talking about videogame history more than actually playing games (except Shenmue of course).

I think the fun of these projects is the challenge of making the impossible possible. I know looked at my Sega Nomad and loved the system, but hated the lousy screen. So I did the 3” screen mod. Then I looked at it and said, why can’t I have a bigger screen. So I mounted a 5” screen to the top of it. I can’t tell you how much better it makes playing Genesis games!
