It's Adam Koralik here and today we're discussing a package I got from the UK, specifically from a company called Retro Gaming Cables. They sent me a few different SCART cables to test out and show you. How is their work? Let's see!

There are three scart types that should be addressed in the description so that some players aren't disappointed.
1. A scart adaptor - this is not scart - It is simply AV cables in an RCA to scart connection adaptor.
2. A regular scart lead. This is the same as above but with an actual (7 pin) scart connection. Quality wise, it's still just an AV cable.
3. RGB Scart - this is the true high quality scart. Usually 21 pin.
This will work best with the following consoles:
Atari Jaguar
Atari Jaguar CD
Nintendo Super Nintendo (Super Famicom) (original model only) (some users report issues with this console)
Philips CD-I or CDI (450 model not supported)
Sega Master System (model one)
Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) (models one and two)
Sega CD (Mega CD)
Sega 32X
Sega Saturn
Sony Playstation (1)
SNK Neo Geo AES
SNK Neo Geo CD
This will not work with anything older such as the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, Nintendo Entertainment System, Colecovision, Famicom etcetera.
Some notable exceptions that do not work because of the limits of the console itself:
Nintendo 64 (unless RGB modded)
Super Nintendo Jr (unless RGB modded)
3DO (any model, Panasonic, Goldstar etcetera, though S-Video is supported)
NEC Turbografx 16 (unless modded or uses external RGB adapter)
PC Engine (unless modded or uses external RGB adapter)
Sega Pico
This device includes a VGA port for use with these consoles:
Apple Pippin (included on board VGA)
Sega Dreamcast (supports VGA, but SCART is supported as well for non compatible titles)
Component Input is also available, and is intended for the following consoles:
Nintendo GameCube
Nintendo Wii (not including the Wii Mini)
Microsoft XBox
Sony Playstation 2
The following consoles will not require this device in any way as they already have HDMI on board.
Nintendo Switch
Nintendo Wii U
Microsoft XBox 360
Microsoft XBox One (and Xbox One S and X)
Sony Playstation 3
Sony Playstation 4 (and PS4 Pro)

Retro Gaming Cables make damn good RGB cables. I have one for my Model 1 Sega Mega Drive (Modded to 60hz) and the picture it brings out is incredible! Especially looks brilliant on an old-arse CRT. :)

Same here. I have about 5 under my TV cabinet and I keep finding them around the house. There was one randomly inside a footstool/box thing in my living room. probably threw it in there and forgot about it.

Maybe,but if you are importing a JP console you still need to have it RGB modded (for the better picture) if you live in the UK.My original PC Engine looked MUCH better than the unmodded PCE Core II i have now..

Good quality scart cables are exciting though, there's a lot of junk that causes interferance and audio buzzes.

Pretty much my entire setup is RGC cables. I’ve found them to be superb quality. And they are just great people to talk to as well. And I’ve just got the standard cables. I imagine the packapunch cables are superior. I would definitely recommend them!

the packapunch cables i believe have alot more shielding, like for each signal. in terms of csync or lumia, generally c sync is better, but it depends entireley on the console. www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/CSYNC-RGB-SCART-CABLES you may find this helpful. if iin doubt, get in touch with them, they are super helpful.

Just to add, I've bought 3 cables from this company Snes , Genesis, and Sega Saturn and they are all flawless. I compared them to the cheap ones i got off Amazon and it's night and day. A huge plus is it fixed the jail bar problem i was having on my Genesis. For us in America these cables + and OSSC or XRGB-mini framemister equal prefection. Being able to play Streets of Rage 2 and Chrono Trigger in 1080p on a 65 inch TV is one of lifes great joys. Buy these cables, support these guys, fast shipping, great prices and a flawless product what more could you ask for!

Finally, you're moving up in the world. There's no other cable like these, or at least no other manufacturer as dedicated to doing the best cables they can. Their testing facilities are impressive, they make sure to get as much feedback as possible, and sample the cables on as many hardware revisions as possible too. They're very dedicated to perfection, as imperfect cables can have very negative effects. When you've got a CRT as bitching as mine, cheap cables just don't mut the custard.

I've been using rgb scart cables from retrogamingcables for about a year now, it's funny actually since I live in the uk I had NO idea old gaming consoles actually supported true rgb. I HIGHLY approve the quality of the cables they sell, the build quality is solid and the performance is clean and vibrant. I like the fact that they have sync stripping circuits built directly into the scart lead heads themselves, making them very easy to use with external upscalers like the xrgb mini framemeister.

PC Engine does not necessarily have to be modified to output RGB. For those who'd like to get RGB signal on their PC Engine, CoreGrafx and Core Grafx II consoles without any modifications, there are few options. These include custom made SCART cable by an eBay seller (fidde se) from Sweden and Mega Drive 2 / Genesis 2 SCART cables via dbGrafx Booster and Super SD System 3 (Terraonion) will do the job.

@@andydavidson1278 I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the consolegoods ones so I can't comment on the quality, but the PACKAPUNCH ones are highly quality than most as each individual wire in the cable is fully shielded which is a good idea if you need longer cables, or have a lot of SCART devices such as switch boxes and scalers chained together, but might be a bit overkill if you're just going straight into a TV, or are not too fussed about the possibility of some slight video noise being introduced somewhere.

I use alot of they're RGB Scart cables, they're very good straight into a CRT TV or upscaled for a modern TV / streaming / recording. Very good for me as a PAL gamer, but regardless of us having SCART over here, we still had to put up with 50hz video for retro systems. (And some bad conversions to that) Still, that's me going off topic, great cables! They even do cables for vintage computers!

I feel you in the NG CD PSU. A few months ago I had to whip something up to safely test if my AES was 5v or 9/10v without opening it. I ultimately had to open it for other reasons (needed a trace repair and a new LM2576 voltage regulator) but at least I know I can safely run it on a Sega Genesis PSU. Even more recently I had to buy a 12v 5A PSU from a thrift store because it fits the TurboGrafx-CD dock (5.5x2.5mm instead of the usual 5.5x2.1mm). Even then, I had to reverse the polarity for it to work. 12v would run the voltage regulator a little hotter than the original (11v US, 9v Japan) so I knocked it down under 11v using diodes. I also has similar problems with my Commodore 64 back in the summer, when the 5v output of the dual-voltage PSU failed. Being dual-voltage, it’s probably got a lot in common with the NG CD PSU, though it definitely won’t work (IIRC, the other voltage was 9v AC). IIRC, NG CD uses 5v and 10v DC through a DIN connector. It’s probably very easy to make a dongle that accepts two 5.5x2.1mm plugs so you can connect any regulated 5v PSU and a 10v PSU with the right polarity. TG16 uses 10.5v, so that might work. USB chargers typically give regulated 5v so a good one might work well for the other voltage. Good luck, Adam!

OG Xbox RGB isn't as good as you might think. Unless you have a version 1.6 Xbox the RGB out is very soft, not significantly better than S-video since the video encoder chip gets it's RGB out by converting the low passed downsampled YPbPr data that also feeds the component/S-video encoding section. Using Component is much better on version 1.0-1.5 Xboxes even if you're not doing anything 480p/HD.

Interesting. I just ordered an MS advanced Scart with the optical out. I happen to have a 1.6 Xbox. Hopefully, it will be a great picture. You think with the 1.6 it would be as good as a component? The advanced scart cable was £30 in the day so I assume it is high quality.

I have bought a couple of cables from them (ps1 & wii) and they are good, id like to upgrade all my cables eventually. The biggest issue I had beforehand was interference... loud buzzing, their cables fixed the problem.

Although SCART cables are common as muck in the UK, even today with HDMI its important to note that a lot of cost saving was forced into cables that people were given in device packaging. usually the cheap freebie cables were not fully wired, supporting only composite and maybe s-video (RGB signals make use of some of the svideo pins so you need those wired) and unscreened cable. So if you are picking up a scart cable in the uk, thicker = better as it indicates either screening or more wires or both. But open the scart connector up and look inside. Hopfully it will have all pis wired. Thats a keeper.

when you tested the scart xbox cable did you verify having the resolution options because im having an issue where I didn't know I need the yPbPr over scart instead of csync scart for the OG xbox.

Nice video Adam and it’s nice to see RGC getting some exposure, they’re my sole supplier of RGB Scart cables in the UK. We were lucky in the UK/EU when it game to the the TV hook ups that were made available to us. I was wondering if you got your NG CD PSU, and you answered my question lol. I hope you can track one down.

I just got a scart cable for my Mega Drive 2, really good picture but sometimes I feel that it's too sharp and can see all the pixels where as playing with RF was muddy it hid all the pixels and gave it a smoother picture. Maybe I should just use composite? it's just a 19" TV I'm using.

I guess we were kinda lucky here in Europe. Any time I got a new console I rushed out to buy the scart cable for it. I have about a million in a box. Now we don't even use them but the difference was stunning.

Very reliable company, great cables. I will say, the Dreamcast packapunch scart cable actually displays 31khz 480p, so it's a nice alternative to a vga cable if you have the Framemeister/OSSC. I use it and (in my opinion) looks better than the Toro/vga box route.

Never mind composite, we had coaxial up to ps2, so mega drive, n64 and ps1, just didn't know there was other options. Had the ps3 a couple years before getting a HDMI screen and upgrading from composite, my lord the difference!

How do you hook up a GameCube, N64, and SNES to RGB Scart if you mod them to use the signal? I only used av also known as compostite and the Wii one too, HDMI and others... Heard that RGB Scart was the best of quality for retro games...

After RF scart was amazing..it was like having a new hi def tv in 1990..sharper image, brighter colours and no fine tuning to get rid of the wobble. We even had a scart adaptor to plug composit into instead of using the tvs composit input..Not sure what difference that would make..probly cos most european tvs in the 90s had scart and maybe not all had composit.

Adam Q: I have a Wii and I need to hook it up hdmi, what is best. I just tried portholic’s hdmi small converter piece, and there was horizon lines continuously running thru the whole picture from left to right. Is there any other better thing I could get? My tv has composite and hdmi only.

I've heard good things about retrogamingcables.co.uk. That being said, I haven't used anything but cables made from Retro-Access (retro_console_accessories) for my RGB consoles. I know she took some heat over that whole issue with the Genesis cables a while back, but everything I've ever ordered from her was packed well, arrived quickly, and worked perfectly. That's from both the eBay store as well as the new website. If something were to go wrong, I'd obviously have no fears in switching over to 'the other option' in retrogamingcables. They are pretty much the Coke and Pepsi of RGB/SCART cable choices!

Hey Adam I just purchased some cables from RGC, I was wondering if you know how to convert n64 and saturn one to csync instead of luma? also I was wondering, is the picture quality of retro access cables much better then rgc cables? can you do a video compareing all rgb scart cables on the market maybe? I see a tiny bit of noise with these rgc and insurrection cables not sure if thats the retrotink scart 2x or not do you think my tv could be causeing this? thank you I know its alot of questions. I apologise

Ordered their CSYNC Wii SCART cable. Coz I am in the UK and wanting to use the Wii on my CRT and I'm from the UK and not many CRTs in Europe support Component. I have been eyeing their GameCube and PlayStation 2 ones (the GameCube one to replace the one that came with my GameCube it was 2nd hand and a cheap knock off cable and their PlayStation 2 SCART cable with the GunCon port so if I get LightGun games I can get solid quality while playing LightGun games)

Hey adam big fan! But I have a question. I am wondering. Just purchased 32x add on with model 2 gen connected. I noticed that it works with only one power supply to the main gen 2 unit. Why is there a second ac cord for the 32x ? And secondly am I harming anything by using only one? Tested is using afterburner with no issues. Thanks in advance

It requires both because in some games the Genesis does half the work and will display content while the 32X does other things. Without the patch cable, it can't show the whole game.

Adam Koralik ok I understand why the patch cable is there now. But what about the power supply? Its wierd because I hit the power button to turn off afterburner for example and nothing happens until I pull the second power plug from 32x. But if I only use one power supple straight to the genesis model 2 its self and no 2nd power supply to the 32x I can turn off and on games perfectly without any issues and everything works great. And these are oem power cables as well.

@2:47 It is not cheap. The Framemeister is just pricey in comparision, even though it is a better solution. There are always diminishing returns and your use case scenario determines whether or not it is worth it. The OSCC on the other hand is a proper alternative.

Hopefully you can review the Pound OG XBOX HDMI Cable. Many new TVs don't have Component Input, so my Monster Cables ain't going to work unfortunately.

If you want to use it on a modern set-up, yes. If you want to use it on a CRT, go with SCART. Well, unless you have a CRT with component I suppose. It'll never look good though, the PS2 famously always looks bad.

Also worth noting if you own a super famicom jr it wont output rgb like the original sfc does. You'd have to mod the sfc jr.

On the fence of picking up an OSSC. Curious if anyone has tried SCART on PS1/PS2 and OG Xbox through OSSC? Just curious of impressions on quality, and ease of use. Any issues whatsoever? Thanks in advance.

Most people watch these videos on flat screen tvs. The difference between RGB SCART and CVBS is even bigger on an actual CRT TV.

It's natively supported, though I wouldn't recommend that for the majority of content.

@@AdamKoralik what kinds of cables would you recommend that won’t create any major problems with the library of games? ideally I’d prefer to find a solution that doesn’t require a mod because I don’t know how to install them and don’t want to pay even more for someone who does to install it for me….right now all I got is the pound cable cause when I got my dreamcast I didn’t know any better lol

@@trevormoody5963 So the problem is the Dreamcast has no 100% compatibility solution that also looks good. The best option is the Mamba. I did a video on it recently. Watch that, should be very informative.

I have a PS1 and Megadrive cable from these. Very high quality. Expensive for video cables, but I've never seen my games looking better.

I always felt outdone by PAL compared to fancy US NTSC but scart is UK standard so I have been enjoying better quality Megadrive and SMS and Gamecube displays for years!

Adam, I have a GameCube component cable but i really don't use it that often because my TV only has 1 Comp input and I have other things using that port. Would I benefit from a component to HDMI converter? Is it even worth trying something like that?

+Trevor Morgan Likely it would introduce a lot of additional noise in the video signal. I find even the Framemeister struggles with that. Though the OSSC did it well.

Get a nice 480i CRT. Maybe a Sony Trinitron. Playing on one of those with conponent (even if there isn't progressive scan) looks way more beautiful than playing on any modern flat panel.

I definitely agree but the problem with that is space for a TV like that and weight! Those things, though incredibly worth it, are incredibly heavy! Still something I might try to look into for sure. If I can get one on the cheap then I'll make room and get it down to my game room somehow. Haha. Thanks!

My Wii U won't show up on the TV despite trying diffrent cables, I suspect it's just the HDMI port that's broken which leads me to use AV instead

The other end of the PC-engine RGB cable looks like the SODIPENG RGB mod Long story short in France Ubisoft at that time opened a subisdiary company called SODIPENG , the acronym standing for "SOciété de DIstribution de la Pc ENGine" litteraly meaning "company for PC Engine distribution" and they offered at that time a 20 $ option to modify the PC-Engine for it to work natively in RGB In fact NEC was well aware of that unofficial distribution network in France and colaborated in the devloppment of the second revision of the RGB mod to this day in France most modders will mod your unmodded PC-Engine with the SODIPENG mod version 2 (one great thing about it was that not that intrusive and made with off the shelf components so was rather unexpensive to do)

A lot of americans think that SODIPENG was a grey importer and therefore the mod unofficial since Germany had pal modified Turbografx (without the 16 at the end) But in reality in France SODIPENG was the only company through whom you could buy a PC-Engine heck we even had games in French made by .. you guessed it Ubisoft on it with the Japanese pin out of the Hu-card since our network was modding japanese pc-engines ;)

Thanks for the links. Do the French PC Engines run games at the same speed as Japanese PC Engines (60hz)? I ask because I'm going to France later this year and I quite want a PC Engine, so I'm thinking of getting one whilst I'm there an taking it back to the UK with me

Nope that's the thing the crystal was changed to adapt for PAL frequency so on and so forth. Yes those were japanese ones but fully modified to be able to display on EU tv''s . On the flip side there japanese ones that just receive the RGB SODIPENG mod but without changing the rest. Hence why you wanna document yourself before buying ;) The PC-Engine bible was created for that purpose actually to give french newcomers to the PC-Engine a thourough documentation on all the solutions out there ;)
