Ryan's Hope was the best soap opera made in the past 40 years. Always entertaining, always thought-provoking, always well-acted ... and usually always well-written. Thanks for sharing all these wonderful episodes.

Have not seen this show since I was a kid. That opening had me in tears. You can never go back home, but for a brief moment I did. Boy, when nurses not only acted the part, but dressed it as well. Such respect. Now they dress in pajamas, and most are overworked and underpaid, which makes for an unhappy profession. :( Looking forward to seeing more of this show. Thanks for uploading them :)

This and another world were the gold standard of soaps in the seventies .they were written like plays!!! Fantastic!!!!too young to have watched it in beginning but im enjoying it now!!! Ive been binge watching since oct.2018 ive watched 5 years worth in 16 months!!! So far..... i think im forming the opinion that the shows golde years were 1975 to 1980 ....not feeling the mob stuff as much but hey still better then any soap on today!!

When I was growing up in the late 1970's and 1980's into the 1990's soap operas were the closet thing you got to going to see a play on Broadway for kids like me who live in rual America who like theatre. Yes you have regional theatre but it really isn't the same. Unless you live in the NYC area theatre wasn't an option. Daytime TV provided that element for many years and many actors did them to supplement their income and did both because theatre was their first love. Then the networks got greedy and expanded the shows to 60 minutes. Actors then had to make choices to do one or the other. AW then made the biggest mistake by going to 90 minutes there for awhile.(IMO that was the first salvo of their eventual demise.) The 1980's rolled around and they went Hollywood thanks to the success of Dallas and later Dynasty. Plus you throw in the success of GH under Gloria Monty who loved to use old Hollywood themes in her plots. As a result all the soaps had to compete with all that and many didn't have the budget for that with some only being 30 minutes and less characters. The New York soaps managed to using all those elements for awhile and succeed until the mid to late 1990's. However the 30 minute soaps suffered like RH, The Doctors SFT and especially EON. EON was the one that suffered the most because it had a uniqueness(mystery/true crime) that the others soaps didn't have and when the other soaps started to copy the formula that EON was famous for making that show was no longer unique and they lost their audience.(Plus EON suffered from times slot / network change and many stations didn't bother to carry it all. Or on tape delay.) That later happened to RH once Loving was green lit by ABC in 1983 because it was an Agnes Nixon product. Now in 2022 the 4 remaining soaps are trying to use all the ingredients that worked 40 years ago with hardly no budget and very poor writing and it no longer works and they cannot figure out how to make it work. GH is the biggest offender who has close to 80 characters many no longer on contract and no balance. Not to mention the roots of the show is no longer there and they don't use the almost 60+ year history it has (I'm including the 6 years of Port Charles they have at their disposal.) It is hardly about the hospital or the people who work there. About 90% of the shows characters don't have anything to do with the hospital. GH needs to go back to their roots and be daytime version of Grey's Anatomy with the core families who had many members of the family working in GH.(The Q's Spencers and Webber/Hardy Baldwin clans.) Bottom line it needs a complete overhaul. I will give credit where credit is due when it comes to Days of Our Lives(which I am NOT of fan of their storytelling or the show itself.) They seem to be the only one who is preparing for future by not being on network TV and creating online content. They also rotate characters coming in and out to keep it on air. It is working in their favor because that brings revenue for the broadcast show because it show with least budget and they are succeeding in how they utilize their characters. The other three are not trying at all to implement what Days is doing well at and I feel that within 10 years none of them will no longer be on broadcast television and only online. Or not on the air at all. It is sad because many made a career starting out on Daytime TV one of them being Kate Mulgrew who still acknowledges her time at RH and embraces it. I think daytime actors are the hardest working actors in the business and they never manage to get the credit they deserve outside of theatre and many the greatest from daytime TV got their start in theatre.

I don't recall ever seeing this before. I was not into soaps but I would have thought I'd remember a commercial for this. Soaps are now a sort of time capsule of how it was before smartphones. Everyone in the bar would be looking down and taking pictures of their food. I think I am now going to watch some episodes of Dark Shadows.

Notes on watching the whole series -- ported over from my comment on ep 158. I'm watching at speed x1.15 and don't even notice the difference. Since I'm gonna be watching hundreds of these episodes, speeding it up can't hurt. I also cue up the next post-commercial block while I'm watching--it's easy with the seeking thumbnails--and jump right over the recorded ads. A small browser plugin for RU-vid makes the viewing even better, but it's a good watch even on my big TVs via Roku's RU-vid app. Don't know if I'll watch the whole series, but probably at least the first half. Love the original cast--some more than others, of course. :) What's the one thing I'm most missing? An easy "resume playlist" feature.

Don't know who this actress is that played Faith in this first episode. I don't remember her at all. @@Lauren-pu6qu Hi and thanks for the clarification. I did notice the episode numbers jumped a big stretch of numbers so your statement is correct and my assumption that Malcolm was on the soap the whole time was wrong. I do remember this show was really good for a long time and then started having a lot of crazy storylines that copied movies and the ads for it in the original black and white small TV guides were funny. Like one with woman being taken by an ape like in King Kong. I was no longer watching the show at that time because of school and/or work most weekdays but I believe it was in the early 80's.

Happy 49th anniversary to Ryan’s hope my brother is the same age as you. I used to watch this along with another world. I remember when grant show Christian slater Yasmine bleeth the actress from Martin trichina Arnold along with actress Leslie Easterbrook who did the 1000 corpse horror flick were all on this show back in the mid 80s Mary Jo slater is the mom of Christian she was also the casting director of one life to live. I remember the actor who played max actor Danial pillon went onto do both guiding light along with the tv horror series poltergeist the legacy which I was hooked on. I loved him on GL as well but I liked the original actor who played Alan on that show but Dan did an ok job. I remember when marj helenberger was on RH I believe both marj and Danial had played an on screen couple on the show they had great chemistry together. I was a big soap fan back then I would read about all of them in all of the soap magazines and would watch all of them on days off from school. My main soaps were RH AW SFT GL and ATWT OLTL was ok as well. Today’s shows don’t have that magic. Those three shows on network television as well as days will never have that class and better writing that those shows had. The 80s was definitely the golden era of daytime from the 70s 80s and the 90s were the best but then came the 2000s and everything came crashing down the writing in 2024 is horrible right now those remaining shows no longer have the big big numbers that they used to have just awful writing.
