Thought I might post my little rabbit hole here of Connor McQuillan's. Might do so else where. I know you'll see this Connor. I'm sure you won't read it. Also if anyone has some extra information or corrections, let me know. Let's start at the beginning. I found "Rhapsodie by Berto Vaudrawn" on youtube many, many years ago. When is unknown, but I remember seeing it on both youtube and musescore. Fast forward sometime, both versions disappeared. Fast forward many more months, it is back on youtube, but still not musescore. That's when I discovered the whole mess. In the comments on the youtube channel there were people accusing Berto Vaudrawn of stealing, most importantly Connor McQuillan. The claim was made by the channel youtube Connor McQuillan. The channel has both referred to itself as personally being Connor McQuillan and being someone who works on behave of Connor McQuillan. The claim is that the score was originally written by Connor McQuillan in 2012, but was put on Musescore in 2016. The song was officially released as part of an album called "the Journey Began" in 2018. Berto then stole it sometime in 2018. He also claimed to have written other similar classical piano pieces. Remember that. So I investigated. Was he telling the truth. I think you guys can probably guess. The reuploaded video's description claimed the song was originally written in 2002, though no evidence is present for when the original video was posted. However, if memory serves me right, it was uploaded well before 2018. If my memory and the memory of other's serves me right, the original video posted before 2018. This alone makes his claims questionable. The is also no evidence of the score being posted on Musescore in 2016. There is also no evidence of the album "the Journey Began" by Connor McQuillan anywhere on the internet. There was a song by him, "the Journey Begins," a slow orchestral piece, unlike the fast Rhapsody. Other songs posted around the same time are also widely different from the Rhapsody. But there is more. So much more. First, lets step away from youtube and look at his musescore account. He has two, user "ClixMusic" and artist "Connor McQuillan." The former features no music made originally by him, claiming to be protecting himself from copyright and to refer to his youtube channel (Well get there, just you wait). The latter is not so much a channel as it is the page showing works by Connor McQuillan. Of the 5 scores on there, they are all posted by other people. One of the songs is "Ragtime Sontata," (yes I spelled that right) which is currently claiming an orchestral version of Rhapsody. There are also 3 other scores that were claimed by connor that cannot be viewed. There are also 3 scores on Berto's youtube channel that are missing on his musescore. In other words, Connor claimed 3 of Berto's songs and had them all taken down on musescore and temporarily on youtube. Facing backlash for his actions from fans of Berto, he has gone on a small, crappy campaign against him, especially after finding his attempt to copyright his work on youtube failed. Speaking of RU-vid, oh boy.... So Connor McQuillan's youtube channel features multiple of his works, likely really his own. But remember when I told you he claimed to have written multiple classical piano pieces, all very similar to Berto's. Well on his channel he only features 3 videos solely featuring piano. The first is a africa by Toto piano cover. It is his only cover. He claimed to have made it himself, but I did some light digging. Turns out their was a suspiciously similar piano cover on musescore by Gabby Miller. In fact I played them on top of each other and struggled to hear a difference. The only one was the soundfont. Gabby Miller's using musescore's 2018 piano soundfont and Connor's using their 2020 piano soundfont. The second piano piece was called "Connor McQuillan - Hammer Rag Performed By Mabel Kwan." As far as I can tell, this is a very real piece by Connor McQuillan. It was even uploaded on the Walden School of Music's official youtube channel stating it was by Connor McQuillan. However, it is far from similar to classical piano, much less rhapsody. The third was his attempt at a challenge to compose in pi/4. He never really did, just composing a normal time signature score on top of a complicated odd time signature. The song itself is super abstract and random. Again, nothing like rhapsody. The rest of the videos appear to be his own creation, though I can neither fully confirm or deny they all are. From what I can tell, Connor McQuillan is a real aspiring Artist. But unfortunately, his character is restricting him from improving and growing. His motivation for stealing songs from other composers is unknown, but no matter the reason, stealing is malicious. I don't want to assume anything, but I will leave by saying this. We all have down stupid stuff while we were younger. I say this in the most constructive way possible, I hope he cringes from his stupid actions and has them haunt him for the rest of his life, turning his past into nothing but painful memories.

Each time I come back to listen to this piece I am always saddened by this little fiasco in the comment section. And it doesn’t quite make sense to me that McQuillan does not have any uploaded works which represent his supposed classical-style-skill-something that would make his case much stronger. Something that could match this level of technical understanding in form and musicality. The only impressive things I have seen from him is his Hammer Rag (It is admittedly interesting!) and his arrangement of Carol of the Bells on Musescore (which is itself sounds pretty cool. But that doesn’t prove his ability to create comparable original works.) His movie trailer style compositions also sound nice in their own right. If McQuillan is so adamant on the topic of copyright law, why doesn’t he just upload each of his precious works under his name? He might have many other worthwhile works, but he refuses to unlist them from Musescore or upload them anywhere out of fear of copyright infringement. I wonder if the fact that he targeted only three of Vaudrawn’s earliest pieces is relevant at all in this issue. In any case, I am personally convinced, also by my own memory, that Vaudrawn’s upload was the original. If anything, his two recent series of Variations Vagabondes as well as his other original works hint towards the case that he is a well informed, if not well trained, pianist and composer. His pieces demonstrate the ability to develop coherent musical themes in his own unique style, while McQuillan could probably do a much better job at that if he applied himself. En Trois Petits Mots and Je ne peux que t’aimer show Vaudrawn’s actual ability live on the piano AND in voice simultaneously, whereas McQuillan’s works rely more on electronic and virtual instruments as well as voice. Perhaps if there had been stronger documentation of the pieces in question, this issue would have been resolved without the mudslinging. (And if anyone doubts my say in this-I am also a musician of 5 years (oboist and some piano) and amateur composer.) In any case, thank you for putting this overview together. Music should be a constructive art form, not destructive-let the goal of its creation not be thievery, but inspiration and collaboration. I wish both artists the best in their individual creative endeavors.

Very well written. While most of my more resent works use a wider range of instruments such as synths, vocal, and more on the side of professional production. My original works were all classical piano. Regardless if my style has changed over the years or not. The main thing still begs is why Vaudrawn's only public version of this work was released over a year after my original version of this work. I have tried to talk to him to ask him to show a copy before my original copy, and he refuses to show any proof of an older version. He has gone as far as to claim he wrote the song in musescore in 2002 before the software was made. While is style of music itself isn't hard to do with a little theory added (like most classical music) its just theory based. I unlisted all my original works from muscore since I didn't want to deal with someone stealing my works again. I would also like to tell you that yes, all my works are published under my name in my BMI catalogue so I'm not to worried about Vaudrawn claiming anything, and he is awear that he is unable to change anything without legal action. He also knows he will lose. This is why he stopped replying to my emails with the info on how to sue me if he wanted to. This would be the only way to "change" the ownership of the work. If he could prove an version of the work before mine. And have clear proof I knew who he was. I have already talked to a few people who understand copyright law regarding music, and have been told that there is no possible way someone could get their hands on a song 1 year before any published version of the song was done by another guy. As for composing classical piano music. I do not enjoy doing that as much anymore as I used to. I prefer composing film soundtracks, and commercial music. All my works still have a slight classical style to them, but not as much as they used to. I do have over 50 works I haven't published mainly since you do not publish every work you make. Only your best works. I would be more then happy to talk with you on discord or over a messaging app to clear up the problem.

Wow, I really like your piece. My suggestion: You could give your works more colorful names. Instead of only "Rhapsody" you could add something. Think of "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. You could name it "Turkish Rhapsody" or "Pink Rhapsody" or "Sophie's Rhapsody" ... or anything you like. 😀 I'd like the name "Paris Rhapsody" because of the charm of this piece.
@bertovaudrawn5824
@bertovaudrawn5824 Год назад
Good suggestion! At the time I had no ideas for a precise title, the writing of the left hand inspired me more the title of rhapsody (thinking of Liszt's rhapsodies) than anything else. I'm French, but despite this I don't think Paris Rhapsody is a good title, because I don't see myself on the Champs-Elysées listening to this work. Much more seventh chords should be added. Even if I change the title I would choose 'Toccata-Rhapsody' for its energetic and tactile side. :) Thank you for your suggestion.

An interesting piece: I like its energy and what you do with it, but I just don't get the Beethoven 'Moonlight' Sonata-like intro, particularly as there is little direct reference to it again. I think I would also lose the last quaver in the bass in bar 50 and miss out bars 51 & 52 and let the Andante come straight in. Whilst I see why you have written a third stave to bring out the melody in bars 92-95, one could simply do this with two staves, with the top two combined with tails up for the melody and tails down for the chords around it with the instruction 'bring out melody'.
@bertovaudrawn5824
@bertovaudrawn5824 2 года назад
Thank you for your very precise analysis on some passages of my rhapsody, it shows that it is still interesting in some points. The reference to Beethoven is crude, I admit. It is a first composition, I know this music is not perfect. I just wanted to start with something classic preparing the chords then used in the whole rhapsody. Bars 50 to 51 aim to break away from the first part by showing a "contrary" cadence (half cadence) to bars 49 and 50 (perfect cadence) and begin the second part. Finally bars 92-95, the melody is hidden inside the chord. I often do as you say two staves when the melody is at the very top of the chord. Here it is in, so I preferred to air out the writing by adding a staff rather than putting tails on the notes which would be stuck together and give the reader confusion between the melody and the chord. Thank you again for listening

Hello Connor, I don't know why you are so mad on me, maybe you just have that to do. Why shouldn't I put on some music that I composed? You can put as many comments as you want on my channel or my Musescore account, it doesn't change the fact that RU-vid and Musescore allowed me to repost, which proves that they took into consideration my words and the evidence that I provided them. Fortunately, I have found dated evidence to prove that you couldn't create these songs. You might be good at fake dates from music files, Connor, but you can't lie about your age. You must know that my most loyal subscribers who follow me from the beginning know that all these compositions belong to me, that I posted them one day with my real name then deleted before reposting them with my artist name. What do you want to do with my music, sell it on Amazon as I could see it? You won't become a billionaire like that. I compose before everything for the emotions that it can release for the listener, and not for the money. So stop typing in the void, and I tell you again, try to compose yourself. I can even give you advice if you want. Have a nice day.
